General Discussion / My thoughts on trees
« on: February 17, 2019, 07:40:12 AM »
Over the years I've become quite experienced in making trees out of bricks so I thought I'd share some thoughts on the matter, as I believe maybe not everyone have the same knowledge on the different ways you can make trees.

I will include a timeline of my own treemaking, the different styles both good and bad and when to use which. I keep all the trees in the same color here so they get a fair presentation. Also I do not oppose modular treepacks and whatnot, but different situations call for different trees.

The first tree was made in 2011 and is a prime example on how to not make a tree in my opinion. Trees with 2x2rounds for leaves are quite popular and I do not oppose them, as an example I think the default Gazebo save makes good use of those kind of trees where the leaves are very sparse, connecting to each other in a spiderweb kind of fashion. This tree on the other hand is dense, I do believe it was made by duping a pile of 2x2rounds all over the trunk. If you like the style of rounds make sure you make many branches and make the foliage more light. Look at the Gazebo save for inspiration as I do not like 2x2rounds because they are performance heavy and attention grabbing. This tree is 1k bricks. Do not make this, it's also very ugly fluff on a stick.

Next tree was made in 2012 and the style here differs in the ramp trunk together with brick made foliage. The process to create this trees was making the trunk and then landscape on top of it similar to creating terrain. Because of this, nothing was left to chance but the foliage was deliberately created thus making the shape rather unnatural and round. The technique works but it's not optimal as it takes longer time compared to the trees I will present after this one. Brickcount is okay at around 200 and it's not an eyesore as the first one, yet it doesn't really look like a tree does it?

This tree and the trees after were created in 2016 and forward and are the ones I actually want to focus on as the technique is the best imo. First of all needs to be said that this tree with a 1x1 trunk is very petite making it not suitable for forests but more as garden decoration, making your house more pleasant while not taking too much space. I do like them as bigger trunks look very heavy next to a smaller build. The process here is to make the trunk straight up and then adding branches in every direction. Then you will make a bush on the ground out of suitable bricks such as 2x3, 2x4 plates, and then dupe the bush all over your branches in a random yet thoughtful manner, making this tree. The good thing about using plates are that when you dupe the bush everywhere the plates will interconnect making the tree very cohesive, bad thing that the brickcount of around 350 is a bit higher but if it's a smaller detailed build this tree is perfect. Something to think about when making this tree is not to add too much foliage as you don't want it too dense, while you want to make sure it doesn't have any naked spots.

This tree is a variation of the 1x1 trunk but with brick foliage, using 2x2, 2x3, 2x4 bricks. Problem with using brick foliage and having the same technique as above by duping a bush, is that duping randomly is more cumbersome as the bricks won't adapt as well, leaving holes and irregularities if you don't place every bush dupe within a brick height grid. This is not necessary if you have some floating mod or zones. More thought is needed when you make foliage nevertheless so you don't end up with a x2 plate height hole through the middle of the tree or something similar. Brickcount much lower at 150.

This style is what I call the most realistic as many trees in bl are way too small for being normal trees. Nevertheless it doesn't make them suitable for every situation, made these for Sylvanor's Soviet City. They are basically made the same way as the previous tree but the trunk is 2x2 and the foliage consist of 4x4 and 4x6 bricks. These I highly recommend, and I don't think I have much more to add about them. Good brickcount for such a big tree at around 300.

My personal favorite, and first try at something more alive and wild. The trunk separates into two, maybe not the best picture to show it. I could also post pictures without foliage if someone wants to see the trunk creation. Similar brickcount to previous tree

Added this one as I do believe they're quite popular. These are the types of trees you find in cities. It was made similar to the 2nd tree (like terrain) but this time I wasn't stopped by gravity as it was made floating. It maybe isn't everyone's style, but I'm not a fan of ramps as they make the trees limited. 100 bricks.

Final shot of the trees with different colors. Colors are very important and don't be afraid to try out different ones.

I'm not an expert but I think I've developed a good technique that anyone can use with ease. Post thoughts, questions and maybe your own trees if you want to.

Games / Hades - from the creators of Bastion and Transistor
« on: December 08, 2018, 07:32:49 AM »
..And Pyre of course!!

The Game
So Supergiant Games has released their new title Hades as early access on Epic Games newly launched store, having the top spot in their small games catalogue. For those unfamiliar with Supergiant Games, they are a small indie company with only 3 titles to their name thus far. Bastion, Transistor and Pyre, all of which reached critical acclaim. Hades looks to be fairly similar to their earlier titles, but now with a rogue-like/Dungeon crawler twist. The theme is as the name presumes, Greek Mythology, with Hades son as the protagonist. As always, art is supervised by the fabulous Jen Zee and music is produced by Darren Korb. As a fan of everything Supergiant has released, I'm hyped to the max and I know I will enjoy this title. /discuss

Concerning early access and Epic Games
I don't have anything against it, being the highlight of their store launch it will give Supergiant lots of attention, which they truly deserve. The game will most likely be released on all the other platforms when it is completed. Early access is great for player feedback. nuff said

Games / Battle for Wesnoth - Released on Steam - FREE
« on: May 02, 2018, 01:19:53 PM »

Gameplay

Battle for Wesnoth is an open source, turn-based strategy game with a high fantasy theme. Play with friends online, hotseat or the very exiting singleplayer campaigns the game has to offer. Modding community is active and you can download playermade content and campaigns in the add-on manager. Choose one of the many factions, recruit the best unit for the situation, take into account: terrain type, weapon type and weaknesses of your units. Outmaneuver your opponent, support your troops with healing units, bring fresh recruits to the front while your damaged ones heal up in villages that also work as your source of  income. Dwell deep into the rich lore of Irdya and it's compelling stories. The game also has a very user-friendly map editor that I use frequently.

History

The game took form in 2003 and has since then been actively updated by a group of devoted people. For FREE! I think I came across the game in 2006 or so and was immediately drawn into the easy gameplay and epic fantasy world. The game is luck-based which reminds me a bit of the board game RISK but also adds a lot of strategy to the mix. I pick up this game now and then, playing through a quick PvE game while watching a stream or playing through a new campaign. It's a game that never gets old. The game's been greenlit for some year now I think, but the developers wanted to get everything right before releasing it. I think some of you may have seen the game before and I hope we can share some memories in this thread. Seriously, all the love and respect to the developers.

Games / GOG giving away FREE copy of The Witcher
« on: April 25, 2017, 08:31:22 AM »
You read that correctly, for a limited time GOG is giving away The Witcher Enhanced Edition. Don't overhype, it's the first installment not the latest. I have yet to play the series so this is a nice surprise even though it's getting a little dated.

Hurry up, the giveaway is only running for 48 hours.

You can thank me later. Have fun!

Cliffside House
The mancave

Introduction

Hey, I've finally somehow finished a building. Shocker right? I have been active and inactive throughout several years now but have in 2016 gotten a bit of new taste for Blockland. For everyone wondering who this fool is, I am the founder of the building group called Cohort and have over the years taken part in many big projects (mainly together with my right hand man Sylvanor) such as Blocko Seattle, Utopia City and the Default Laboratories. Oldcigarettes such as myself better know me as Sleven, if my forum name confuses you. In my noob days I was a big force to be reckon with on Diggy's MetropolisRP, member of the building clan Colleagues and commonly recognized dude. Furthermore I am a regular on Barnabas' rare/rad servers, brother to the old coder Mctwist and creator of the first butterflyknife-only TDM. So, now that you've read all this trivia let's get into the build.

Synopsis

As you're scrolling down to gloat at the pictures you may be thinking, "what is this stuff, I read all of this for this simple house". I'll give it to you, it is in fact a very simple house but let me tell you what I like about this building. It's clean and maybe even bland, but it got shape and character. Not kitschy excessive shape, but just multiple boxes arranged in a neat way. As a matter of fact you can even count how many boxes the house actually consist of if you want to. You could call it the "lazy man's house" if you'd like, because man I'm lazy and I have a short attention span. I like details but I don't like working with details, at least not on a bigger scale. I could spend a whole day talking about all the little things in this house that I really enjoy but I don't think you're really that interested, so ultimately I'll just let the pictures do the talking even though they don't make it justice. Honestly, I created this as a sort of home I could consider living in. A "mancave" of sort.

I know there is a lot people may dislike about this build, one thing being the colors. There are in fact some things that I regret, or that I wish I had done differently but in the end I think I've emphasized on the the focal points to create an attractive entity. Or at least, singularity.

Pictures

There's a lot of them. Drag them to their own tab to see them in full resolution. It's a wide mix of different environment settings, so it's not as cohesive as I'd had liked.

Add-ons

Not sure, but here goes.

-1randombrickpack
-4x4f Printplate
-4x4fPrintplateC
-BlackdragonIV
-LegoCrates
-PoleAdapters
-PrintPlatesCeiling
-VerticalPlatePack

Final Word

I would like to keep an open dialogue in this thread concerning the building. Criticism should be constructive and properly motivated to create an educative and healthy environment. I really enjoy making these clean modern residences and will probably make a new one with the same theme but different characteristics. I also consider creating my own take of the Predjama castle which is a very neat and inspiring piece of architecture.

Finally I'd like to apologize for taking this small "project" with correspondent thread so seriously. I was just in a mood to write some proper english, as I am rarely obliged to do. Let's hope I at least get past the first page. Cheers.

..and I will release the save if anyone cares

Help / Limitation in resizing images
« on: August 23, 2016, 09:34:34 AM »
Heyo, I have a nuisance bothering me that I don't know how to solve. When posting images on the forums I need to resize the images if I've used megashot, though when I do it I hit some sort of limit. I can resize them really small but not bigger than what you see here. Curious if you see the image as the size I've put in or if it's relatively small.

Games / Battle for Wesnoth - GREENLIT
« on: August 02, 2016, 06:55:41 AM »
Battle for Wesnoth has been greenlit. This is something I couldn't even hope for! This is the game of my childhood, my now, my forever. Developed as a free-to-play game by a handful of random devoted people, this game is a diamond in the rough.

Turnbased, strategy, high-fantasy, glorious, co-op, campaign, internet, mod-able awesomeness.

I'm a bit lazy to pump out some megathread of some sort, but I just wanted y'all to know about this.

https://www.wesnoth.org/

The game has a devoted fanbase and it is constantly developed, compared to other games *cough cough*. The fact that is was greenlit in less than 4 days speaks for itself.
