just wanted to mention this.

i have used unity for a while now, i'm looking for something else. really i didn't think it'd get this many mentions.

please, just stop. i want to learn from another engine, not one i'm familiar with. unity does not fit me, dammit i should've put that in the op

Unreal Engine and learn some C++. This is not newbie friendly and you're going to have to buy books. Otherwise try Source and whatever language that uses.
Welcome to the developing world, this is not a cake walk.

I feel like Java for game dev has jumped from "no one wants to" to "everyone wants to" because of Minecraft :v
It's really not worth it for game dev

Tbh only 3 engines are worth working with, Unity, Unreal, and Source. Coding languages should be C#, C++ and a little Lua. Java is dead and loving sloppy as forget.
But whatever, I've made my point from a professional stand-point, take it or leave it, and suit yourself.

Unity Free is a perfect start up. Don't use Java or Boo though. Go straight to C#.
