Couple things.

These guys weren't packed in to the trenches like a human pig pen; body heat would at most cause slight runoff and wet snow, which in winter conditions would freeze back up very quickly, added to the fact that these trenches had some ventilation in the form of doors. The thick plywood that the covers are made of also does not radiate heat well.

That brings me to my next point; why would snow be melting fast? It's still in the winter, yes?

As I said with the doors, the soldiers dug trenches in the snow to keep movement between the line and behind them open. Suffocation would occur in very rare incidents of trench collapse, maybe.

Casualties in the trenches are somewhat significant, with about 28,000 in total falling victim to minor to medium cases of frostbite or dysentery. Many soldiers avoid anything more than wet boots by keeping on the move or returning to sheltered bases behind the lines via the snow trenches. Few soldiers of those 28 ,000 die and most are put out of action for a couple months. Dysentery is a problem but if tackled early it isn't as bad.

Replacement uniforms and boots are handed out, and men dig inclines and small channels to designated drainage areas. Plywood is placed over the channels so men don't step in to it.

Dry bathrooms are worked on, but for now the only options are those behind the lines or makeshift ones in the lines.

Kyrevan soldiers are instructed to stay in trenches or houses with roofs. Some of the more hardy sharpshooters use the starkly white colour of their uniforms to their advantage, being able to hide almost undetectable in the high snow, though most just try to stay warm. Soldiers take to using their rationed alcohol to create small fires to keep themselves warm. Flank troops dig in.

Efforts are made to make trenches in the snow to keep movement unhindered.

Rockets are loaded with crude illumination rounds which are fired at night, mostly over no-mans'-land and Vlastcovite territory.

Trenches take to laying thick plywood over the tops to somewhat dissipate non-direct hits, though direct ones are likely fatal. However, the range and thin width of trenches make direct hits difficult, and the Kyrevan bombardment continues.

Flank forces begin pushing around the sides as city troops put pressure on Vlastcovite lines. Troops take to firing grapeshot at roads to reveal mines. Additionally, many troops move building-to-building in the cover of night to confuse Vlastcovite spotters.

Kyrevan artillery enforces a 24/7 bombardment. About half of the active pieces are dedicated to light to medium around the clock fire. Vlastcovite front lines are targeted and all but the strongest reinforced buildings fall before the withering fire.

About a dozen welded steel vehicles arrive via train. They are moved on wheels and are almost totally surrounded save a back portion. The top and front sections are designed to withstand direct mortar/howitzer hits and offer some protection from cannons. They also have thin slits akin to archer slots from old castles to fire muskets out of. They are incredibly unwieldy and take about a dozen men to push it even at slow speed, but offer protection as a small mobile bunker.

Due to increasing reports of archers and crossbowmen, spotters and patrols are posted on the lines 24/7, and some infantry are equipped with thick wooden shields.

All attacks in Kosagrad are halted and the lines are built up. Winter clothing, including fur/false fur hats and heavy trenchcoats, often dyed white, are distributed. The water in masks are ditched and grease or simply nothing replace them. Effectiveness is decreased, but nothing else can be done.

More sharpshooters are brought up to Kosagrad, and Kyrevan military papers glorify them as heroes as their kills mount. Supply lines are reinforced.

Militia and standard footsoldiers reinforce the lines and another 30,000 militia arrive, with many more expected. Additional artillery is slowly brought up.

Attrition warfare is enforced.

Experimental "rocket" artillery, using mild explosives/gunpowder on a fin-guided stick, are tested at Kosagrad. Very inaccurate, but they can have severe effects on enemy morale when fired due to the noise and explosive effects.

von Gneisenau arrives to the besieged city of Kosagrad with an additional 55,000 Fähnrich, 1,250 Grenadiers, 3,000 light and heavy cavalry, as well as around 200 cannons and 60 howitzers. He immediately orders Elmic troops in the city to hunker down as they build makeshift bunkers, cavalry traps and various infantry traps in a heavily defended line. Some of the cannons are moved up into the city to be used as close fire support with grapeshot and the like. Bags of dirt or sand are used to protect the pieces as they attempt to create a no-mans'-land in front of their lines. Taczowa sharpshooters are brought up and are stationed along the lines to pick off Vlastcovite forces, and often go on nighttime raids into enemy territory to eliminate enemy officers.

He uses the rest of his non-reserve forces along with additional Elmic troops to push the flanks of the city and secure it from Vlastcovite forces. More defenses, not nearly as heavy as those in the city, are constructed there.

He calls for militia reinforcements as all of his remaining batteries, numbering roughly 155 cannons and 55 howitzers begin to shell the Vlastcovite side of the city relentlessly with only one objective in mind; total and utter destruction.

He also begins replacing Elmic officers under him with Kyrevan officers, the majority of whom are almost fanatically loyal to Kyrev and by extension, the UEK, following the death of Duke Leopold II. This also extends to Kyrevan foot troops.

Kyrevan generals elsewhere enforce a policy of slow advance, attempting to fight a war of attrition against the outnumbered Vlast as they receive standard and militia reinforcements. Similar policies as those used in Kosagrad are used as they reach larger towns or cities. Additionally, men are issued with cloth masks that are soaked in water to try to somewhat protect from the effects of hemlock. Groves of hemlock are secured wherever possible. The noose on Vlast's neck tightens as the majority of the UEK's military begins pouring on to Vlast soil.

Large scale recruiting happens in Kyrev, and government propaganda supporting the war against "the Duke-murdering Vlastcovite villains" is spread to every village, town and city in Kyrev. The already angered populace join in waves.

Some rough maps of Vlast with the approximate amount of territory controlled by both sides, and labelled cities could help. Seems like both sides are bumbling about a little.
