why are you getting defensive

when you talk to people that you don't know well you leave an impression on them: they get an idea of what kind of person you are based on how you present yourself, what kind of things you say, how you say it, how you react to things they say, etc. people are more comfortable around other people who they actually know-- having some stranger just walk up and straight ask u out or even worse "will you be my girlfriend" is awkward if not creepy whether or not they have a crush on you or whatever

 it's all practically common sense so wtf u mean "what do you mean"

hers and my parents are relatively free to drive us wherever, so that isn't exactly a problem.

This is especially a problem when neither of you has a car to go anywhere, or money to do anything.

Money and transportation isn't a problem, I would say.

if you like that straight-forward approach, then just start casually talking to her first-- give her a general idea of what kind of guy you are through how you compose yourself in a regular conversation, it will make her more comfortable around you regardless of whether or not she already likes you. then, before the conversation starts to drag on or get silent or (hopefully not) get awkward, transition into something like "i'm not sure how to word this, so i'm just going to get right to the point: you've been stuck in my mind lately, and i think it'd be cool if we could get coffee sometime soon" or whatever you want, just have a couple times/places in mind beforehand
