the drums are definitely audible but they're either not as loud as the actual melody or around equal to it
This song is already on my list, and it's a good example of drums done well. The unobtrusive volume and low pitch make it acceptable, though the way the beat cuts out after an 1/8th note is irritating. Even so, I have to say that I enjoyed the parts without drums the most.
The beats at the beginning (0:30 - 1:00) are an excellent demonstration of the despicably earsplitting kicks I hate.

Here's an example of a song that does well in the department of drum sound.

Despite being extremely heavy on the bass, the kick is low and resonant - not infuriatingly high or short.

You know I meant cymbals.
But forget those too...
I used to play trombone in a concert band, and I sat directly in front of the cymbals. Eventually I just took to balancing my instrument on my shoulders and covering my ears with my hands whenever a large crash came up, because I couldn't loving handle the volume.

I love drums
Welcome to my thread, Adolf. Please do enjoy your stay.

Stop listening to stuff artists then? In electronic, I find that drum programming is incredibly simplistic and underappreciated. They do exactly what you say because they want it to be loud for the sake of loudness. There are tons of other music and genres that utilize drums in amazing fashions and mix them properly to be a companion to the other instruments, as much as the other instruments are companions to the drums.
This is why I asked for better songs. Please give examples.

aren't the drums one of the main features of electro music
drums are actually really important in some bands, such as a jazz band. they help keep tempo and because i've played in a jazz band before i know for a fact that the drums are absolutely needed or else we would've been everywhere with our tempo
Drums can be an essential part of music, but when they detract from the enjoyment by being earsplitting and repetitive, it becomes a problem.
Also, in the OP I meant electronic music in general, not just the genre "electro".

You have to BEAT drums just to PLAY THEM

DRUMS ENCOURAGE VIOLENCE TOWARDS WOMEN
Despite its obviously hyperbolic nature, I'd like to keep this thread as serious and on-topic as possible. Please discuss the topic, which is the obtrusiveness of drums in music.

Off Topic / I HATE (some kinds of) DRUMS
« on: July 12, 2015, 12:39:32 PM »
You heard me. I loving despise percussion instruments, specifically ones that make loud and low sounds on downbeats.
Anteceding are the various reasons why I positively abhor these abominable excuses for musical instruments.

  • They are EVERYWHERE. I cannot find a single good electronic song that doesn't have loud drum beats.
  • They hurt. Turning up the volume loud enough to hear the melody makes the drums absolutely loving earsplitting.
  • This is amplified by the fact that using an equalizer to reduce their volume eliminates the bass line as well.
  • Conversely, attempting to amplify low tones results in an unbearably loud drum volume.
  • Their parts are uninteresting and repetitive. It doesn't get any more simple than one beat every quarter or half note, and yet for the entire length of virtually any song they obtrusively and irritatingly whittle away at the listener's aural nerves and sanity.

More elaboration: The specific kind of drums I hate the most are the higher-pitched kicks, especially short or cut-off ones. A good and resonate kick around 60 Hz is ideal for me, but if a song is full of beats that last under 1/8th note at 250 Hz, especially if they're louder than the rest of the song, I tend to end up with red streaks on the side of my head.

Discuss why drums are an invention of satan/Riddler with the sole purpose of exterminating the human race, and send me good electronic* songs that don't have loving drums or that make good and nonrepetitive use of them.

USA is definitely going to win at this rate.
The Japanese robot was originally designed for looks, and isn't in any way suited for actual action, let alone combat. They'll need some serious modifications and upgrades if they hope to even stand a chance against the "super American" robot that was designed more like a bulldozer than a showpiece.

I enjoyed reading your rant, but there are some critical flaws, the most notable of which is the fact that you appeared to skip over almost half of the sentences in the article. When you replied to certain sections, you selectively ignored many of the more difficult sentences in favor of easy refutals and obvious counterpoints. This is a mistake that I see very commonly in rhetoric, and I lost a lot of respect for your other points because of it. Please try to be mindful that you reply to all of the article next time.
