"Race ya to the water!" Leon shouted.
The cheater, he was already halfway down the bluffs by the time he finished yelling. There was so much vegetation, so many loose roots covering the rocky stairs, it was a miracle he didn't trip and break his neck.
"Oh, c'mon, Mitzi, can you be any slower?"
Can you be any more annoying?
He taunted me from a couple meters down the slope. These steps were so damn steep, I might have well been running down the side of a building.
"Leon, can you, like, just be patient? Jeez! Heels don't work well on rocks, you know..."
I continued to inch myself down the bluffs, struggling to find footholds in my cursed shoes, while Leon chuckled from below.
"Here, princess, lemme help you down."
In your dreams.
He spoke in a light, sarcastic tone as he held my back and ushered me down the sandy hillside. His hands felt nice against my back. They were gentle, yet... supportive. Comforting. But something was off. I could feel it in my spine: something unsettling about his touch.
However, I managed to contain my uneasiness and climb down to his level. Upon my descent, I tripped on a root, but Leon was there to catch me mid-flight.
"Don't worry, babe, I got you." He remarked with a smirk.
"Do NOT call me babe." I responded with false hostility.
Normally, I hate being referred to as 'babe' by anyone. In Leon's case, I was just trying to hide my true feelings...
"Whatever you say, babe."
And with that, he scampered down the steps before I could strangle him.
Smart boy.
When I finally reached the berm, I was struck with awe. The sand felt magical between my toes. Like tiny pieces of stardust. An ocean of smooth glass. Or... Cement rubble...
Strange.
"So, isn't it amazing?" Leon had snuck up on me while I was enjoying the sand.
"I told you, Lübeck beach is divine. It's like a dream. The water is so beautiful, so clear, so... so... lucid. So dreamlike..."
He paced around in circles, taking in the sweet, crystalline air, the rush of relaxing water between his feet. And then he turned to me.
"Don't you think so too, Mitzi?"
I wasn't paying attention to a word Leon was saying. I was just gazing at him, letting my mind take in his features, his presence. His emotions. For the first time ever, I realized that I loved everything about him. The way he spoke and acted, all confident and flamboyant. But also, intelligent. Mystical.
Maybe the beach was just messing with me.
"Mitzi...?" He shook me back to reality with his soothing voice.
I guess he noticed I was just blankly staring at him. He simply smiled at me and grabbed my hand.
"C'mon, Mitzi. Let's walk along the water. Together."
His hand was cold. Too cold. It was almost as if he was... he was...
"Mitzi, do you believe in dreams?" He smiled at me as we walked. "I mean, dreams coming true."
I wanted to say that one was coming true right now, but that just seemed a bit too facetious of me.
"Sometimes, I feel like the world just doesn't work the way it's supposed to. You must get that sometimes" He gripped my hand a bit harder. His skin was cold to the touch. I tried to ignore it.
"Yeah, I feel that often." I looked up and saw his blue eyes trained on the horizon.
"I find dreams as an alternative to life. Like, you can see what you want, be who you want..."
He paused for a moment, and then turned and looked me in the eyes.
"... be with who you want..."
I was breathless for a second. I swear my heart flew to another universe.
We continued walking.
"In dreams, we see what we want to. What we should be. Like our own personal movie, where everything is directed by you. But, I wanted to ask you, Mitzi..."
He stopped and turned to me again, this time smiling.
"What dream do you wish to come true, Mitzi?"
Oh god its happening. All the time I spent with Leon, with all the precious memories I shared with him, I was blind. I was clouded, seeing the world the way it was to me, not how I wanted to see it.
But now, my eyes were finally open. I could see for the first time.
The air behind Leon seemed to be shimmering. A gentle black and white grain covered my vision, like in the movies we would see. It was dreamlike.
In your dreams...
"I want you. Leon." I finally let it out.
He simply smiled, like he was expecting me to open up the entire time. Then, he pulled me in for a kiss. My heart stopped. Time slowed down, as our lips almost met...
"In your dreams-" His voice was cut off.
I opened my eyes for the first time.
The bombing raid was still in full heat. Most of my chest and thigh was buried in rubble, the weight increasing with each explosion. The sky was lit ablaze with anti-air shells. American B-17 Bombers and British Whitleys alike traversed the night sky overhead, raining molten metal upon the earth.
I tried to ignore the piercing sound of bombs. I tried to ignore the blood roaring in my lungs. I tried to ignore the melting Dresden cityscape.
I looked over to my shoulder to find Leon still here with me. I couldn't see his face; it was buried completely in broken glass and concrete. But I knew he was still there. His hand, still in mine...
In your dreams...
I couldn't feel his pulse anymore. His fingers were slack. His hand, cold.
In your dreams...
I pulled his hand close to my beast. My heartbeat rippled over our bodies, getting louder every second. As I began to lose consciousness again, I thought a little more about his last, unfinished words:
In your dreams.
I had like five grams
