The derail is loving real in this thread.
But it would really depend for who it was IMO. If it's a person who constantly is a delinquent and causes fights, things like that a half mast would be pointless. If it was a person who was destined to do good and passed away, a half mast would be a nice memorial.
OT: When the sub/teacher that's away actually makes you do work and doesn't assign it for homework.

(I guess this goes more for High School, Since in college you dun forgeted up if you're failing a class.)

Going on fron what Kishgal said, I actually never figured out this why we had a work ethic until the near end of my freshman year. Missed work was piled so high it was a miracle that I made it all up. Learning this responsibility really changed how I view work and homework itself. Learning that ethic early in life practical shapes up how you do work for the rest of your work life.
