about 2 years ago i found a gamemode for garrys mod that looked promising and i thought that was really good, but sadly the server was dead. a few months later their server was rebooted but the gamemode was insanely broken due to the steampipe update, they had several problems with the maps and i pointed out some good ones because i would stay on late at night (people building in the spawn area to block people out, etc)
since i would stay on late at night i wanted to become an administrator because every admin was offline and i was the only night-guy there, so in their application i applied and didn't become admin because of some stupid question
one of my friends who worked on the server and was admin and knew me for a year was starting to get caught up in school and stuff, he basically requested that his place be taken by me
i administrated for about a year until the server was down due to several months because of problems with the addons, one of the developers who i knew was going to beta-test a new map they created soon and the server wasn't working for them, i requested to host the server and he obliged. we beta tested for about a month and i provided some new assets for the night version (dark looking tornadoes, new EAS screens, whatnot). and later that month he basically gave me copyright privileges saying i can edit maps to my own will as long as they are shared personally and i give him credit for the original map and myself for the edit.
fastforward about 7 days after learning how hammer editor works and i edited one of the maps to have a night sky and fixed some issues with the buildings, it was shared personally and everyone who had it liked it
around this time (september 2014) the map that i helped beta test finally releases, and the dev who gave me copyright said i can "be a part of the dev team" and stuff
one of the people who i met earlier in 2013 was also helping with some stuff (i'll call him john because i dont want to reveal his actual name), during mid 2013 and mid 2014 i was hosting a server for the addon because the devs were having problems with the server and they couldn't host it due to the money that they were losing. one of the other devs who didnt like me warned me that he'd take the server down and kick me off the group due to copyright infringement (this was when i was hosting in 2013).
so i made some videoswhile hosting the server
april 2015:
fast forward a few months and im in a pit of stuff because my grades were down the stuffter and i didnt have any time to administrate, and the owner tells me that i need to atleast be on an hour a day, so i settled with that
i had to go on a huge hiatus because i didn't know what to do and grades> vidya game, and the dev who i was friends with was talking to me about the next map hes developing sending me screenshots, and it doesn't look bad, either
around this time one of the people who i was friends with since i found out about the addon was starting to work on particles (john), he sent me a video about how they worked and he basically created a wallcloud or whatever
about a week goes by and i ask for the download of an addon that was hidden (the one i beta tested) because of crashing problems, he told me he had an earlier version that worked completely fine
he accidentally sent me the link of an older version of the particles he was making, he told me not to download them. me being curious and wanting to experiment with how they worked, i did. it was pretty much complete and didn't have any problems besides one of the tornadoes being a bit bigger than it should have.
may-june 2015:
around this time a person i knew who made videos and had around 5000 subs asked me if i could make anything for him and if he could have the hidden addon that was taken down, i oblige and give him the addon, he asks if i can make any particles and i give him the particles thinking that john wouldn't see his videos, me thinking that he wouldn't, me knowing the guy i knew he wouldn't send it to any of his friends because it was only him recording and there wasn't any point. one of the main devs got in a huge loving feud with john because john kept sending him the particles that were finished and the dev being a lazy ass never added them. the devs announce that they're closing down the server for the final time with no event of it ever coming back up again. in a skype conversation with me and 2 devs about a month later, he hints at it being a false saying that "did you tell maxx about the late april fools joke?" and i thought at the time that he was playing me and it wouldn't truly ever come back up. i didn't really have any intention on developing anything for the maps because i don't know how to do jack stuff in hammer and im not good at editing particles.
july-present
around now its hinted at that the developer that talked to me with the screenshots and stuff is already making another map, about a year ago he gave me a map he was developing that he described as "tornado village", which basically contained a town with no walls and a few roads that lead to nowhere due to it being WIP. he tells me to not tell anyone and i don't because its really important. i bring up the unfinished map to one of the people who worked with him and he said that "he is making new tornadoes for it and its going to be one of the maps he works on later in the end of 2015 and early 2016 and that i shouldn't have lost it had it been a really unique alpha". we conversate for about 20 minutes and we end the conversation.
john used to be really uptight with his particles, only giving it to the devs and after me offering that i can release it to the public and explain how to use it, rejects and says that he wants it put out through the workshop. i realize that his particles is a huge update that probably isn't ever going to be released after he continuously talks about it and shares screenshots of it to other people. i leave off on a stuffty note and tell him "if its private why do you keep flashing it like around like a girl with her tits out" and he doesn't say anything.
around this time im hosting a server after setting it back up, a few people join every now and then and i eventually get a population of around 10-16 people a day. some fun stuff happened. sadly my router sets my computer's local ip to a different one rather than the one thats already portforwarded, so the server doesn't host properly and i cant find out what the local ip is
fast forward to around 2 weeks ago, john finds out about my friend having the particles (the one who wanted it for filming) and flips out and angrily questions me about it, i pass it off to him saying that i accidentally packaged it inside a addon that he wanted to use for filming purposes, and i didn't know until scanning the addon afterward that it was there.
around earlier today i realize that a few of my friends are starting to post screenshots of themself using his particles. i ask one of them and he says that "he gave them to me" and i get pissed off because he never gave them to me either, even before i sent them to my friend. he kept being uptight about how he wanted them going through the workshop and i just blew off because it was loving pretentious bullstuff, i flip out and the friend who i was talking to sent him what i was saying and while questioning him about it told me to "suck a rooster if im pissed about him giving them to people he trusts", yet im a part of the dev team.
i talk to a few friends who dont have them about the whole ordeal and they say its complete bullstuff and question why hes pissed at me
i don't know what to develop for this addon pack, and the dev who sent me screenshots of his map never really responds to my messages anymore so i don't know what to ask him.
i want to help pull out this addon from the grave because it was p unique and was the only one of its type.
i have a few options and i need help choosing them because i can't decide what the forget to do
i can either
A. start making sounds for the maps
B. try making particles
C. learning hammer editor and helping with the maps' creation
D. host servers periodically with the maps and POSSIBLY use it for an alternate server for the addon pack
i have no idea on how to do B and C or A, but i know how to host servers.
i need help learning hammer editor and i don't really know what to do, i've tried searching for tutorials and stuff but the complexity is too far.
i want to make particles but they always turn out like stuff and they don't scale properly.
hosting servers is loving useless because anyone can do it and i want to either make sounds or particles OR edit maps.
i want to learn C really badly but im not good at it.
