What I've been looking at as a likely option so far has been the Ruger LCP since it seems like the right size for my hand (as well as I can tell without actually holding one), cheap, and the 380 ammo has very little recoil. Any thoughts on that specifically?
suck it losers i got the big money suggestion

i haven't used the lcp specifically but i've been happy with the rugers i've used, and the lcp has good reviews. i guess it's actually a pretty good semi-auto to start with because it only splits into 5 parts when you take it apart for cleaning so you're not gonna be fumbling around with it

here's hickrooster45's video on it

revolvers are good guns and all but it doesn't teach you anything outside of it because theyre so simple
you could know how to disassemble one with your eyes closed but you still don't know stuff about a semi-auto pistol
i would imagine a concealed carry class would at least show you how to take care of the gun they use, and for their first gun having one that's easy to clean would be better than going straight into something more complicated

Get a revolver. They carry more powerful cartridges and are less likely to have jamming issues unlike slide guns. They are simpler to use and don't leave brass casings everywhere when fired. If loading speed is an issue just get moonclips so you can fast dump cartridges and stick a full set in just as fast. You can choose less powerful cartridges for revolvers as well if kick scares you. I wouldn't recommend anything lower than a .38 special. Don't worry much about ammo capacity. In most self defense situations, if you don't have the attacker dead in the first six shots you're toast. Barely more than that being shot off is very unlikely.

Pay close attention in your carry classes. Don't be afraid to make a decision when the teacher throws a scenario at you. Freezing up while making a decision is the worst option.
pecon didn't want a gun with big kick but yeah a revolver is probably my recommendation too, even though i'm not really a fan of short barreled revolvers

i don't know any good cc revolvers than what i said in an earlier post tho

Thanks for the input everyone, this should help me pick out something more easily.

I guess my only other question would be if there is some reason I might not want to use a compact for range shooting?
my best guess is because the barrel is much shorter, your shots won't be as accurate as a "regular variant" of the gun, and the barrel will get hotter faster (i'm assuming on this one, don't quote me), making your shots even more inaccurate. longer barrels will spread the heat out more so they won't get as hot and should cool down a bit faster, and for something like a revolver i imagine the barrel being outside of the slide / casing would help it cool down faster

i don't know if i'm completely right about the longer barrels spreading the heat / revolvers cooling down faster / compact gun barrels getting heated faster, but i do know you want to wait a bit in-between shots so your gun is still accurate and you don't screw anything up on your gun

i'm a fan of ruger so i'd go with american compact which can be 9mm luger or .45 auto, or the sr45 (about the heftiest) which is .45 auto, or the least expensive and smallest in weight and length, the lcp II which is .380 acp

i know you said you don't want much kick but if you start getting the hang of dealing with kick you can go with a taurus small frame or a smith and wesson bodyguard, they use .38 special and the small frame can go up to the .357 magnum. the kick won't be absolutely ridiculous but it'll still be more than 9mm

five-seven i guess
do not get a five-seven, i have never seen one cost less than a thousand dollars and that is definitely not the investment pecon wants to make when they don't even know what will feel comfortable for them to use

People thought it was dying 3 years ago. I'd say we've still got a while left.
badspot didn't specifically say the forum is on borrowed time 3 years ago. the end times is now.

Hunting allows hillbillies and other American types to forget things that aren't their cousins, so I believe it's a necessary part of the culture.
alright bitch listen up just because i put a big ass hole in a deer doesn't mean i put my weiner in it

that's for further up north
lets be honest, most hunting isnt for food - few people are true survivalists these days. that said, any hunter who doesnt eat their kills (assuming its reasonably edible) is wasting a good opportunity to taste something that isnt available for purchase much.
meat is wicked expensive so getting a good sized deer can actually save you some money. i know last year me and my pops got 3 pretty decent ones and the meat's lasted over a year now, about a pound and a half of beef here is $6~ so having more than a hundred lbs of venison is worth the $40-ish each from licenses

it is mostly for the sport and fun of it, though. we don't need to hunt but it's something we do every year and it makes some pretty nifty stories of the animals doing dumb stuff or the wicked shots you manage to pull off
