Some of you may remember my older servers, where I hosted overly complex evented TDMs, edited add-ons, etc.  Well, now that I've installed Blockland on the new computer, I've been trying to get another build together.

Basically, I'm making a mall.  Not for shopping, but it's going to be another TDM.  I really want to make a quality map to play on, and it seems that those are few and far between.

I started a day ago, and I'm working through the main build, but here's what I think I need help on:

The storefronts.  A quick google search shows what I'm talking about:

I'm going to host a contest of sorts, throughout most of this week, where you can come and build a store like the above on a 16x32 baseplate.

I hope to be hosting later today, but I don't know the exact time.

Here are the rules:

1. Must be on an available 16x32 baseplate.  It cannot protrude overtop of the boundaries, either.  Basically, I want to have these things be modular, able to place them anywhere I have a 16x32 space.
2. Must be at least 8 blocks high.  Nobody likes buildings that are as high as the player.
3. Must have walls on all sides, it has to be an enclosed structure.  You are building a store that (if it wasn't a TDM) people would be going into and shopping in.
4. Can only have entrances on one wide side.
5. Only one floor, please.  Can have a raised platform in one part of the store, though.

I will post when the server goes up.
Server is down.
Server name is "Mall Storefront Building Contest".

Please come in and build when it does, and the good ones will be placed in the final build, as stores in the mall.  Needless to say, I hope to get a lot of entries.

If you are interested in participating, please post here saying so, so that I have a good idea of how many people will be coming.

Thanks in advance.

Well yeah, this standard is... high. Probably I will take a small look at them, but I won't promise anything. And why should I feel offended? :P

Every time I try to give criticism on someone's work they always take it personally and turn it on me (no matter how I say it), so thank you for not taking that the wrong way.

By the way, I had a look at your M79 model, and it looks AMAZING.

Try and aim your mouse click away from the download link then. I openly confess that I sell all your online behavior data to Badspot for his own nefarious purposes.

Yeah, if you download RTB, it will tell Ephialtes where you live so he can send minions to take you away in the night and steal all of your chickens.

update coming later today, when jaydee is done with the CI/item icons

So does this mean they'll be on RTB?

Maybe have both?!

Yeah, but they look too similar to be good in something where blockier, more generic models are used like Blockland.  People will be confused, "these guns look the same, why are there two?" etc.

This feature only downloads the content required for the add-on, not the scripts. It won't show up in your add-ons/maps/sounds menus. It's exactly the same as the temporary folder except it downloads from super-high-speed RTB and comes in a neat little .zip file.

A note on content downloading in v3.4:

Normally when you join a server you need to download all the files the server has (all those models, textures and sounds) but with Content Downloading Blockland will download all those files from the RTB server instead which means it goes hundreds of times faster and allows you to download things you were never able to download before including:

  • Water/sky textures for maps
  • The preview image for maps
  • Bricks

What's even better is you can then go to "Your Mods" in the Mod Manager and open the "Content-Only Add-Ons" category to see all the content you've downloaded. You can then either delete it or download the full add-on if you like it!

Excellent, that's perfect.  New advertising for RTB should be "No More "HOAW LONG IZ LOAAD" When Your Clients Use RTB!"

Nice work.

Here's another thing, though.  Does RTB download the water/sky textures and preview images for maps I've already "content downloaded" through regular Blockland?

How about the SCAR from Bad Company? At least another silenced weapon.

Don't complain that the picture is small, click it.

That's a SCAR-L(light) SMG, and it would be better to have a SCAR-H(heavy) Assault Rifle IMO.

RTB v3.4 is now available on the auto-updater, here's a changelog:

Code: [Select]
- Content Downloading (when you join a server you'll download all the server's rtb add-ons and these are then put into a new category of the Your Mods window)

And if I don't want those add-ons for myself, and I just want them in a temporary folder like before, how can I stop it from downloading the add-ons through RTB?

I'd agree with you here. Except I just want a DX11 card instead of a DX10.1 card :(

Muahaha, I have an ATI Radeon 5970.  Dual-GPU, triple monitor DX11 glory!

These guns are really great, but maybe after releasing these you should take another look at your other weapon pack.  Most of the models are too small, and I think they need some work to bring them up to the standard you have set with these guns.

EDIT:

I think I sound kind of harsh.  I don't mean to offend, but these new guns just look so good.  Sorry.

I haven't been really following any of the goings on here, but is this going to be uploaded to RTB?

See! This is why if I see a server that I think is really fun, I save it just in case it disappears. I wouldn't call it "stealing" as I never use it that much and let it stay idle in my saves list. From doing this, I have a few old builds from v12 that I never see anymore.

It's only stealing if you then go and use the build in your own server without permission.  Using another person's build for your own single-player enjoyment is fine.

You can install it in program files if you want, but if you don't run as administrator, you might have some problems. Installing in C is just easier for most people.

Yeah, that's what I've found with other games.  Call of Duty 4, I originally ran it normally, get to rank 37, run it as administrator, and it removes all of my settings/profiles and makes a real copy, instead of that "virtual store" stuff.  So, from then on, I always run every game as administrator first.

Well, if it's like any other game in that respect, I'll just install it to Program Files.  It'll make it easier for myself and my OS.

I had a laptop with Windows 7 for a week or so before sending it back for about 99 problems but a Blockland ain't one.

I cannot deny my love for Windows 7.  It is much better than I expected.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your help.

General Discussion / Blockland and Windows 7 x64
« on: May 02, 2010, 07:52:25 PM »
I'm going to try to install Blockland tomorrow, but I have a few questions.

I've heard of some problems that Blockland has on Windows 7/Vista, and on 64-bit systems.  I've seen people say "install directly to C:/Blockland, and not Program Files".

What's the dealio?  Will it even work?  Any particular things I must do to make it work?

So far, I've had no problems with every game I've installed when they are installed in Program Files, as long as I run it as administrator.  Do I still need to make an exception for Blockland, and not install it in Program Files?

Has anyone else gotten Blockland to work on Windows 7 x64?  What methods did you use to get it to work?

Hopefully I can get back into the swing of things by tomorrow, but I don't really want to spend a day troubleshooting this, so thanks in advance if you can help me.

Well, I've had a look at all of the add-ons and servers that have come out since I got the new computer, and it's pretty exciting.  I guess tomorrow I'll have to install it and get my eventing mojo back.
