Ex-Starbound dev Damon Reece allegedly worked on Starbound for hundreds of hours without seeing any kind of monetary compensation. Reece, also known as demanrisu, is currently Route 59 Games’ lead writer on the upcoming cinematic visual novel Necrobarista.

Reece shared this on Twitter, stating that this happened when they were 16 years old. They were starting their career in game development and worked on Starbound for almost two years. The sandbox adventure game was critically and commercially acclaimed, turning British developer Chucklefish into a household name.

Reece’s tweet mentioned that they were not the only Starbound dev not to see a single cent for their work. The tweet reads that “I worked hundreds of hours and wasn’t paid a single cent for it while the company made unbelievable amounts of money off of my labour, and that of around a dozen other unpaid workers.”

They added that a couple of those unpaid workers ended up being hired by Chucklefish, but “it doesn’t mean they weren’t exploited too.”

Reece was afraid to talk about this for fear of destroying their career, but is now able to do it since they are in a “stable and safe” position. They are not asking for money and when confronted with questions regarding their possible actions at the time, the response is simple: “abusive power dynamics.”

Reece stressed that no one should work for free, because the only thing that “young people and students angling for a foot at the door” will get from doing free work is “a permanent bad taste in your mouth once you realize you’ve been had.”

Founder of Igloosoft Games, Rho Watson, or Rhopunzel, who had previously worked on Starbound and Rimworld, corroborated Reece’s story and added several tweets with alleged controversial actions from Chucklefish’s staff and management.

“Management’s attitude was “if you care so much, pay them out of your share”, despite the fact that 1) they were earning 5x as much as me and 2) I’d been told at every turn that I wasn’t part of the company and had no say in it,” tweeted Watson.

Another tweet from Watson said that she knows of another story of abusers in the gaming industry, but “it isn’t her place to tell because it’s not [Watson’s] story.”

Verizon has agreed to sell Tumblr to WordPress owner Automattic Inc. for an undisclosed amount, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Verizon, which first acquired Tumblr in 2017 after it purchased Yahoo, started to explore a sale earlier this year. Automattic reportedly bought Tumblr for less than $3 million, according to Axios, a stunning drop in value from the $1.1 billion Yahoo paid for it in 2013.

“Tumblr is a marquee brand that has started movements, allowed for true identities to blossom and become home to many creative communities and fandoms,” Verizon Media CEO Guru Gowrappan said in a statement. “We are proud of what the team has accomplished and are happy to have found the perfect partner in Automattic, whose expertise and track record will unlock new and exciting possibilities for Tumblr and its users.”

Although it makes sense. Tumblr was once a hugely influential force in the blogging and social media sphere, but it become less so under Yahoo and then Verizon’s ownership. Meanwhile, platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube moved to fill the void and become much larger cultural forces as a result. Still, Tumblr does have a very active and dedicated community.

That became very apparent to Verizon leadership last year when Verizon decided to ban adult content on the platform back in December. Tumblr acted as a safe haven for many LGBTQ members who used the platform to explore and express their loveuality and to find an online community that shared those interests. The decision to ban all types of adult content led many to boycott the site, and the ban alienated a significant portion of Tumblr’s user base. There are no plans to reverse those decisions, Automattic Inc.’s CEO Matt Mullenweg told the Journal. Instead, Tumblr will act as as a “complementary” site to WordPress.

“WE’RE NOT GOING TO CHANGE ANY OF THAT.”
“It’s just fun,” Mullenweg told the Journal. “We’re not going to change any of that.”

One part of being a complement to WordPress is possibly sharing services and functionality, according to the report. Tumblr has a mobile interface that executives could use to leverage WordPress’ own mobile platform. It’s unclear what other services the two companies may share, but considering both are blogging platforms to some extent, there’s room for experimentation.

David Karp, who founded Tumblr in 2007, left the company in November 2017. He didn’t mention his reasoning at the time, but he wrote in a personal blog that he had faith in the company’s future. “I beg you to understand that my decision comes after months of reflection on my personal ambitions,” Karp wrote at the time, “and at no cost to my hopefulness for Tumblr’s future or the impact I know it can have.”

"We've lived here for a few years and this is the worst we've seen them!" Arnel told Fox 35.

In the video posted to Arnel's Facebook page, hundreds of blue land crabs are seen scurrying across the street and into bushes. Some, unfortunately, appear to get crunched under a passing car.

Arnel told Fox 35 that some of them even greet her outside her front door!

"I was told they are blue land crabs. Apparently they burrow throughout the year, but it's during this season (and their spawning season) when the heavy rain forces them out."

According to researchers at the University of Florida, blue land crab mating and female migrating season runs until December, peaking in October and November

This isn't the first time we've seen a crab invasion in Florida.

A Port St. Lucie man witnessed hundreds of land crabs crawling up his screen porch and all over his yard in a video that went viral.

so a few days ago i remembered an old arcade game that i used to play every summer vacation a long time ago, but i cant remember the name and im trying to find it

the first thing i remember about it was that you shoot at the screen like you would do on old games like the house of the dead, and you could choose random minigames to advance to the next level of the game like shooting at the right target with a certain amount of points and not letting enemies destroy something you must protect

it also had some weird mascot that would appear in some of the minigames, it was some sort of a really small angry man or something

does anybody know how it was called? i cant remember well and i could use some help

Games / Razer closing Ouya store, officially killing the console

Online services for Razer’s Ouya and Forge TV services will shut down at the end of June, Razer announced today. The shutdown brings to an end the ambitious, turbulent, and mostly unsuccessful travails of the crowdfunded console for Android video games.

Ouya as a device was discontinued back in 2015, when Razer bought the startup company and merged its content library into Razer’s Forge microconsole ecosystem. While Ouya hung on as a brand name and publisher for Android games, Razer was supporting the online storefront with its Forge TV hardware. Now both are gone.

While the Ouya platform will still be able to play and discover games through the online service until June 25, 2019, after then is more uncertain. Downloaded games may still function after that date if they don’t require an online check-in at launch. “Contact the game developer for confirmation,” Razer says.

Owners of Forge TV and the MadCatz Mojo microconsole (which could play Ouya games and access its storefront) may still connect to the Google Play store and other platforms still in use. After the Ouya and Forge TV services are discontinued, it will be up to developers to shift their games to that or another service to ensure they’re still available and supported on the old hardware.

Ouya began life in 2012 and rode the early enthusiasm for Kickstarter video gaming projects to $8.5 million in crowdfunding, still the ninth-most all time for the decade-old funding platform. The console launched to the public on June 25, 2013 at a price of $99 and sold poorly.

Ouya was supplemented with $25 million in venture capital from 2013 to 2015, and the company’s sale was mainly so those investors could get something back for their money. Razer bought Ouya in June 2015, but it did not acquire the company’s hardware assets. The company later said it would pay about $600,000 that Ouya had left unpaid from its troubled “Free the Games” initiative, an effort to spur exclusive games development for the console which had a number of unintended consequences.

Ouya did have one hit game identified with its platform and brand — Matt Thorson’s TowerFall, which was later ported to PlayStation 4, Windows PC, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, the latter coming in 2018.
