Ultimate Pirate forgetaround

Way back in 2015, Plastiware and I were on Panquake's Throwmod server when Plastiware had an idea to make a pirate-themed version of the server.  We got to work immediately and soon, Ultimate Pirate forgetaround was born!  It got unexpectedly popular and quickly expanded as more and more players built islands.  It even directly inspired Skill4Life's Pirate Adventure!

What started as a small build with only 5 or so islands grew into an expansive adventure with dozens of islands, over 60 chests, a currency system, a Zelda-like dungeon, secrets, and much more!  Explore, find treasure, collect gems, fight other players, or just throw each other off the lighthouse.  It's up to you!

It was hosted three times in 2015, 2016, and finally in 2018.  Since we've both kind of moved on from this server and Blockland in general, we thought we'd release this rather than let it fade into memory.

Required Add-Ons

The list of required add-ons is included in the .zip file.

Check "Required Add-Ons.txt" and "Required Music.txt" for the full lists, or just copy and paste ADD_ON_LIST.cs and musicList.cs to your config/server folder.
The environment used on the server is also included as "Environment.txt" if you know how to load environments.

🐍 Zapk's Snake Bot 🐍

A few years ago, Zapk gave me a snake bot to use in Ultimate Pirate forgetaround.  He never released it, for obvious reasons, so I thought I'd do it now.

Add-Ons / Bot Invulnerability Events
« on: April 29, 2018, 03:43:15 PM »
This adds two new output events for bots:

  • SetInvulnerability - Sets whether or not a bot is invulnerable.
  • ToggleInvulnerability - Toggles whether or not a bot is invulnerable.

Pretty self-explanatory.

General Discussion / Quake-Like DM - Fourth Time's the Charm
« on: April 17, 2018, 07:21:35 PM »

It's back!

This 24/7 server is supposed to mimic the chaotic arena shooter action of games like Quake and Unreal Tournament, using Bushido's Quake Type weapons (and the FaecPwner).

There are currently five arenas:

qldm1

This arena is a three-level complex with a simple building style and simple textures. It has many ramps and neat geometry that you probably won't look at because you'll be too busy flying through the map at high speeds. The map includes three unique weapons, as well as lava pits.

qldm2

Indoor/Outdoor complex with many different ways to get around: teleporters, jump pads, etc.  The first asymmetrical map I made for this server.

qldm3

This arena is extra dangerous because it's floating in a void.  Six jump pads and a Faecpwner in the center.

qldm4

This asymmetrical indoor/outdoor map has many different levels and ways to forget over your enemies.

qldm5

This multi-level, evil giant castle has the most interactivity out of any of the maps.  When all of the tower's beams are powered on, something special happens.

qldm6

This is definitely the most Quake-like map I've made so far.  It takes much of its aesthetic from the first Quake game, especially the teleporters and the skybox.

I don't usually post things that I build on here because they're either unfinished or not very good, but this is one build I've been really proud of.  Made it a few years ago on Boltster's Viking Funeral server as the first and only boat I've ever built.

Feel free to rate it if you want.

Add-Ons / Playable Instruments
« on: March 18, 2018, 11:37:30 PM »

The official release of the playable instruments mod!

This add-on adds a modular system for loading and playing instruments either live or with prewritten phrases/songs.
It comes with an extensive GUI that lets you create songs, phrases, and bindsets easier than ever before!
This GUI contains a "Help" section that has all the information you need.

Please note that this is not compatible with Support_Instruments or any of the old Instrument_* add-ons.  Delete those if you still have them.

The notation system has also been completely reworked.  If you want to learn how it works now, please read the "Help" section of the GUI.

Event_Instruments - PLEASE READ: I didn't realize until after I made these that Blockland removes semicolons from output events.  Rather than change the entire notation system, I simply made exclamation marks ! replace semicolons, but only for these events.  So basically, wherever you would normally use a semicolon, use an exclamation mark instead.  I know this inconsistency sucks, but I'd rather have this than screw up people's songs by changing how the notation system works.

General Discussion / Stop badmouthing the game, you idiots
« on: December 22, 2017, 04:47:24 PM »
Updated on 2017-12-26

It's incredibly frustrating seeing people frequently complain about how the game is "dead" and there aren't as many players as there used to be.  I'm not going to lie and say that the playerbase isn't declining, because it is, but crying about how it's dead is completely hyperbolic and discourages people from playing the game.

One of the things I believe discourages people are the Steam reviews.  The review score on Steam is currently 68% "Mixed".  You wanna know why?  Because of all the people complaining that the game is "dead" or that the developer has "abandoned the game" or whatever.  How many people do we see with hundreds or thousands of hours posting a negative review on Steam because the player count isn't what it used to be?

Do you really think this helps?  When a veteran player of the game complains about how "dead" it is (even though it's not), do you really think that will bring in more players?  You do realize how counterproductive that is, right?  Clearly there's something that keeps you coming back to it or else you wouldn't have played it for so long.  Maybe we should change our attitude and try focusing more on what we love about the game, instead of focusing on all the negative aspects.  That's not to say that we shouldn't point out its flaws, but just that we should try talking about the game more positively and start posting some better reviews.

Obviously posting positive reviews on Steam won't be the thing that "saves Blockland" or whatever, but it's certainly better than talking stuff about it.  I already did my part and posted a review on the Steam page and I think you should too.  Don't be lazy and just say "it's good" with a thumbs up; put some effort into it.  You don't have to write some long post detailing every single thing about the game that you like, either; it can be a simple "I've spent countless hours on this game with my friends, from building ships to..." etc. etc.  Just a quick recommendation for people to see.  (I mean if you like writing long reviews you can do that too, obviously).

If you are writing a longer review, you should be honest with people and address the flaws you think the game has.  Being more positive doesn't mean glossing over the negative aspects, but stop being so goddamn melodramatic, my god.  The game isn't "dead"; the playerbase is declining, yes, but it's far from dead.  Badspot has not "abandoned" us either.  He's been developing the game for over 13 years; that's a long-ass time for a game to be supported by its developer, especially for an indie game.  Badspot isn't obligated to add any more features.  It's a finished product, and it has been for over 10 years.  There are many things I would like added to the game as well, but I know that Badspot has no interest in updating it any more and I don't blame him.

It doesn't have to stop at Steam, either.  Almost every time that Blockland is mentioned somewhere else, the whole "game is dead" subject comes up.  This doesn't help.  If a game is brought up that you've never heard of before, any interest in that game is going to be completely shattered if the people who've played it complain about how "dead" it is.

I don't know, I would just like to see more positivity when it comes to discussions about this game.  You don't have to be annoying about it and for the love of god don't spam threads and comment sections about it, but just mentioning how fun it is to build things with your friends, or make add-ons or whatever could peak some people's interest.

You don't have to do any of this, but don't whine about how dead the game is and then turn around and tell people not to buy it.
