VATS loving sucks, it's just some hamfisted attempt to bring the old fallout's RPG mechanics into the FPS genre but all it does is make it suck at being both

Captain Simon Faw - Gladiator - PAK-FA

After accelerating back to normal cruising speed, Faw pulls the nose of his plane up to orient himself towards the underbelly of the Sabre (the one that's targeting Yes-Man.) His grip tightens on the stick as he locks onto the Sabre. Letting out an exasperated breath, Faw fires two long bursts from his dual LCP cannons, hopefully catching the Sabre off guard.
The Sabre takes evasive action, but not before taking a few solid hits to the underside of its fuselage. It continues to pursue Yes-Man, but cannot line up a shot.

I climb as the missiles give chase, releasing countermeasures on the way up. The missiles should run out of propellant and shed energy trying to climb.
Though you buy some more time, the missile shows no sign of slowing down as it chases you skyward. That is, until the engine straight up sputters and dies.

"Shoho, some Sabres are moving to engage me. Can you cover me while I rearm for air to air?"
: [Lieutenant, go help him out.] I have to advise against resupplying at this time. By the time you get back the air battle may have reached its conclusion. Are you sure you'd rather not expend your existing ordnance first?

One of the J-20s arrives to help you out, peppering the Sabre with gunfire. You see a bright shaft of light materialize off your port wing as what would have been a direct hit is knocked off target.

I dive down to try to get K-10
You pick up a SAM from K-10.

I turn and attempt to take shiva-1 from the side with some ac5 fire
It neither evades nor diverts from its course, instead continuing to gun straight for the duo through the hail of shells.

I fire off my anti-ship missiles at a frigate.
The first missile is shot down by a PD gun, but the second slams into the starboard side, knocking out its PD emplacement and crippling the fire control system.

The fleet notifies you that they have entered missile range.
: Pilots, this is Admiral Lewis. Be advised that we are now engaging ship-to-ship. Try to watch out for incoming and outgoing ordnance.

A hail of missiles rain down on the Huitzitlaotani fleet, and the sky fills with LAMS beams and exploding missiles. It's not immediately clear how much damage has been done (although Yui can confirm the frigate she was just firing on is destroyed by the allied attack), and before you can even do a count of who's left, the Huits launch a salvo in retaliation.
: [All ships, return fire! Reinforce our northern flank, and get clear of my bow!]

I do some evasive manuvers and pop flares.
"I guess the triangle plan will have to wait!"
You manage to spoof all but one of the missiles, which does minor damage to your fuselage.

Right before the 4 MMS missiles come within 300 meters of his PAK-FA, Faw pops flares and pushes his nose down into a drive at half-max speed, reducing his heat signature and hopefully throwing the missiles off his tail.
You on the other hand are able to evade all four.

"Engaging!"
I fire the three AShM's at contact CG3.
"AWACS, do we have an EWAR support? Something that could harass the ship's radars?
Missiles one and two are shot down by Frigate-6, and the last is shot by Cruiser-3's own point-defense. You then pick up two SAMs from Frigate-6.

"Agh, forget."
I drop flares and turn as hard as I can.
You get hit by the last missile as well.

One of the Kintharian planes is shot down by the MMS salvo, and the Rafales begin chasing down the other Shouho pilots. With their escort currently engaging the enemy air targets, Fanak is able to slip in and take out two of the enemy ships. The Sabres gun for Yes-Man and Crash, and the Shiva seems to have its sights set on Tippy and Whiskey.

The enemy planes open fire. ARTEMIS'ed MMS-12s from the pair of Sabres target Gladiator, Lefty, Hawkeye, Yes-Man, and two of the Kintharian pilots. 4 missiles for each plane.

A few more minutes of flying and you come up on the outskirts area of operations. You are approaching from due North, and are currently too far away to fire on the ships. A handful of Huit planes begin vectoring in your direction, intent on stopping or at least delaying you from reaching the ships.

Just gonna pop in here to see if I can get a straight answer before I go off to google:
There's something clicking in my case, I opened it up but couldn't narrow down the source apart from "near the back", so I know it's not the hard drives; and it doesn't seem to be a fan, either. Any of you know what else could be making that sound?

Badger and Zombi, you can still finalize your loadouts and I'll update them, but I'm just going to kick things off.

Everyone gets to their planes and flies out to rendezvous with the allied fleet. Once there you meet up with the two squadrons that will be assisting you in the attack, a flight of five Kintharian J-20s and three Mercanan Razorbacks.
: Fanak flight here, we're still undermanned from the attack on that carrier, and repairs were incomplete on our surviving craft. We're going to need some people dedicated to taking out any enemy fighters or we'll be torn to pieces.
: Shouho flight copies, we'll keep the skies clear. Mjolnir, will you be able to spare any planes to assist us?

Time passes, Yui recovers, Tippy still has no luck with the robot, everyone gets to see what happened to Kissinger, and you all get called in for a briefing.
: As some of you may have read about, the Imperials have finished the withdrawal from Taiton. It's taken the GTO weeks of constant fighting and cost over a hundred thousand lives, but Mercana is now officially Imperial-free. More importantly, the coast is no longer heavily patrolled by Zit warships, which gives us an opening for an amphibious invasion of the Huitzitlaotani Delta. A joint Kino-Mercanan naval task force is currently sailing around Malanta and preparing to engage a Huit naval group defending their territorial waters. Leading the defense is the H.E.V. Miquiztlan, some dreadnought boasted to be able to wipe out entire fleets on its own. You're going to get in there and soften up that fleet so our allies can finish them off.

He brings up an image showing the different types of ship that will be present.
: Priority target for the task force is the Dreadnought, but don't make a beeline straight for it or you'll get torn apart by the other ships, namely the frigates. Those are the fleet's AA guardians, and they're packing dozens of SAMs in those forward bays. I would advise you to take out a few of these first so you don't get swatted out of the sky. The cruisers and corvettes on the other hand, are likely going to be the ones hammering our fleet. Though not necessarily your priority, taking those down will make the squids' jobs a whole lot easier. The patrol boats are playing the role of light point-defense and pose almost no threat to our fleet or you, so you can ignore them entirely. Though they might get lucky and shoot down one of your missiles. Anyone have any questions?

Do I want AShMs and hope that they have massive warheads, or do I want a lot of AGM's.
: An Anti-Ship missile will cripple a frigate or sink a corvette with a single warhead, our Mavericks aren't that powerful. However, if the missile is shot down it'd be quite a disappointing waste of munitions. That reminds me, there will be a specialized COMRO ship in the allied fleet capable of resupplying torcreepes and anti-ship missiles, but it'll be quite a hike to get there. At least try to make every shot count.

also something i neglected to reflect up until now is that strike aircraft get discounts on anti-ship munitions
torcreepes cost 18, down from 25
ASHMs cost 12, down from 16
