Elena and Norum are up against the building, as well as Ryde. There are adjacent buildings that look awfully abandonded and in very poor condition, some are boarded up.

There are windows on the target building that are large enough for a man to make an entrance, and in the condition they're in, they'd be easy to break through.
Rog yawns and places himself against the wall on the other side of Elena.
"Ready when you are."

Her smile becomes more apparent and she squeezes Elu's hand again. "You're the best kid I could ever ask for," she tells him as they enter the hangar. Her spirits seem to have been lifted somewhat thanks to her robot companion. "Thank you."
: You are welcome.

Jaakko leaves the CIC.

"Well how about that?" he remarks to Kommadant.
Kommandant just stares bemusedly at Jaakko, who seems to be treating the events that transpired earlier with the same gravity as a burger catching fire during a barbecue.

"I dropped flares on the runway during training. Hit the wrong switch."
He turns over to Coma.
"How'd you earn Coma? Gotta have a good story for that one."
: 'Cause I didn't talk much.
: It wasn't just that. She was off in her own little world for the first half of training, never looked like she was paying attention to anyone. Instructor asked her if she was in a coma or just stupid, and the name stuck.

Character:
Name: Rog (As in "Roger", but without the "er")
Age: 38
Physical Description: 5'10 (exoskeleton provides an extra inch) male of mixed descent. Disheveled black hair and beard.
Quote from: Inventory
Pockets: Wallet containing ID card and life savings ($615.54)
Backpack: Oversized Cudgel (just the head fits within the backpack itself, the handle sticks out), 6 TV dinners, steel canteen (filled)
Weapons: Makeshift blunt instrument fashioned from rebar and engine parts from an ancient oil tanker.
Body Modification: Bionic lifting arms (2) and support exoskeleton, sleep reduction chip.
Short backstory: Working at a shipbreaking yard in the Pig Iron district for a meager, if sufficient, wage; Rog saw fit to scrape together enough cash over a few years to augment himself with a pair of bionic arms and a special brain implant that allowed him to get a full nights' rest in only two hours. He reasoned that doing so would allow him to take longer shifts and amass more money in a shorter timespan, hoping he would actually be able to start a retirement fund instead of having to work straight into the grave. However, after only a few months, the arms began rapidly losing their dexterity for one reason or another to the point where his fine motor skills are entirely shot; followed by the brain chip overstepping its bounds and actively preventing him from getting more than a few minutes of sleep each day. The result is a neverending state of mental exhaustion and physical uncoordination that cost him his home and livelihood.

The corners of Cualli's mouth twitch into what might have been a smile. "Mmm, and then?"
: Hit her again.

"Thanks," Cualli says, sounding as if some weight has been lifted off of her shoulders. "I really appreciate it."

Cualli addresses Elu, "it's alright. No one's going to hurt you. You can put your book away." She gently takes his hand and begins to continue on their way to the hangar but pauses.

She looks back at Virvel and is silent for a brief moment. "...sorry for shoving you against that wall. This has all been a lot to take in and..." Cualli shakes her head. "I'm kind of a mess."
: Mm, you can-
: We're all a little on edge after what happened today.

Once she's a ways down the hallway, Cualli speaks to Elu again. "I said a lot of words back there that I don't want you repeating, okay?  I don't really want you to go around swearing at people. I especially don't want you telling anyone that Virvel threatened me like that." She squeezes his hand reassuringly before continuing. "What would you have done if she did come at me with that knife, though?"
: I would have hit her as hard as I could with this book.

Markus snorts a little bit. "I'm Scorch. Good to meet you guys."
He extends his hand for a handshake.
Fang accepts the handshake.
: Scorch, huh? Why the hell do they call you that?

Checks the station of the crewman that the Sky Marshal tasked earlier to track down Eremit's Foxbat.
: How's it looking right now?
The crewman just shakes his head.
: We aren't seeing him. He must be out of range already.

The Sky Marshal dismisses Crash, Kommandant, Walt, and Snowman.

Cualli sighs and her arms drop to her sides, shoulders slumping. She looks if she either hasn't slept in years or is about to have a complete emotional breakdown or, better yet, both. "I guess. I thought I knew him better but... guess not."

She rubs her face and gives a shaky sigh. "All I want right now is to just wake up and for this all have been a bad dream. It barely feels real." She moves her hands out of the way, glances at Virvel, and settles her eyes on the less hateful face of Frisk. "But right now I need to get back to work before I not only get arrested on false charges, but also get into stuff for not showing up on time."

"Besides, unlike a certain masked starfish, I realize that I have a duty to my country and can't just quit and run away when stuff gets rough."
: Well for what it's worth, if anyone comes asking me- asking us if you had anything to do with it, our lips are sealed. Right, Virvel?
: ...Yeah. Sure.

Cualli looks over her shoulder at Elu, checking on him.
Elu is still holding his book in front of him in case he has to use it to defend himself, while watching Cualli closely.

Cualli sees the knife and her mind immediately flashes back to when Arkhip was stabbed in Moratov. For a split second she feels a pang of longing, but immediately reminds herself that she's in this situation because of him.

"Because I was the only one who wasn't a loving cunt to him," Cualli retorts, raising her voice and practically spitting at Virvel. "You want to blame him leaving on me, but I was probably the only loving reason he saw to stay." Cualli's voice cracks at the admission, and the pang of longing returns. She takes a shaky breath.

"If I knew anything about what he was going to do, believe me, I would have tried to stop him. I wish I'd known," she says, the sound of defeat creeping into her voice.

"You want to stab me?" Cualli holds her arms out to the side, nodding to Virvel's knife. "loving do it. I don't give a stuff anymore. Bleeding out on the floor will sure as hell beat whatever else command is going to try to put me through because of that starfish."
Virvel motions like she's about to follow through on Cualli's request, but Frisk grabs her knife arm before she can.
: Now hold on, let's not do anything crazy here. Look at her, Virvel- does she really look like she's faking this?

Virvel shrugs Frisk off and gives him an incredulous look before putting her knifeback in its sheath and staring daggers at Cualli.
: No.
: I believe you, Cualli. Seems to me like he saw an opportunity in the heat of the moment and just left.

Markus begins making his way to the showers after checking over the Condottiero one last time, wishing he had brought an aircraft that could actually have been of use. After cleaning up from the last mission, he heads over to the bunks, and spots one of the new Djuriskas recruits on his way there. He figures he may as well introduce himself if he's going to be flying with them regularly.
"...hello, I don't think I've seen you around much. What's your name?"
: Coma. And this is Fang. As in, "forget, Another New Guy?"
: It sounded a lot better before I knew what it meant.

Walter raises his head from looking at a nearby display towards the Marshall

"Hmmhh, I had talked to him previously on different occasions and he always seemed rather miserable a good portion of the time. When I was speaking with him and attempting to get him to return to the fight he mentioned some things I hadn't know about."

Walter rubs his chin for a moment and sighs lightly as he thinks about what to say next

"He mentioned something about a family member passing away and also being personally attacked by someone, probably a plethora of other small things to go with that. Not to mention that medical issue of his, The guy just didn't have much going for him here. I know since I've met him he's had plenty of debt accumulate behind him."
Listening to Walter's account, Lorens thinks about the jab Frisk made over the communications channel.
"Say, Colonel Zolnerowich, has Arkhip tried running away like this in the past?"
: Never. This is the first I'd even heard of his problems.
: Sounds like a typical case of poor moral fiber- the man should have never been allowed to fly in the first place. We can expect more occurrences like this if we don't end this conflict soon.

"What the hell--" Cualli exclaims, grunting in pain as her head collides with the pipe.

"Hell no," she replies, grabbing Virvel's wrist and attempting to forcefully pry her hand away from her collar. "You think I'm happy about him deserting? You think that if I knew anything about him wanting to desert that I wouldn't have tried to talk him out of it and avoid all of this?" Her emotions getting the better of her, Cualli makes no effort to hold in her anger. "You honestly think I'd be stupid enough to help that starfish run off and forget all of us over, risking getting myself arrested and then executed? Not that it's going to loving matter anyways--"

As she speaks, Cualli grabs Virvel's shoulders and tries to push her against the opposite wall and pin her there, glaring the whole time. "Because I already have to deal with Kirves trying to get me arrested for stuff I had no part in. I don't need this whole loving carrier turning on me for stuff I didn't even know was going to happen, trying to pin all the blame on their token Deltan. I don't need you trying to shove me around."
Cualli's STR 40
Virvel's STR 33
Cualli's roll: 10 - success
Virvel's roll: 84 - failure
Result: Cualli is now in control of the grapple

Cualli shoves Virvel against the other side of the hall, getting to see a brief glimpse of surprise on her face before it's back to business as usual.
: You think I'm accusing you of helping him because I'm tribal? I'm accusing you of helping him because you two were clearly an item!

Virvel's AGI 33
Roll: 5 - success

Virvel slips out of Cualli's grasp and takes a step back towards Frisk, drawing her knife and pointing it at Cualli.
: Oh you can deny it all you like, but I'm not stupid. You're the only person he'd give so much as the time of day!

Lorens flips through his kneeboard and states the coordinates for both the first waypoint and the initial point where the Imperial airship formation was expected to be, according to Djuriskas flight's waypoint scheduling.

"... About fifty miles from the IP, AWACS identified a hostile group approaching our flights head-on. Kommandant and Virvel formed a separate element and advanced to face the threat, while the strike package trailed behind another five miles, eventually breaking to avoid enemy BVR scan patterns. Pansar, Frisk and Djuriskas-6 turned North, while Arkhip and Djuriskas-8 turned South.

"Following orders from Crash to assist with suppressing air defense assets for Djuriskas flight, I entered formation under Arkhip. The three of us maintained a minimum of fifteen miles of separation from the furball. From heading 190, we turned sixty degrees before I noticed Arkhip breaking from formation.

"He turned to bearing 141 and continued in that direction until my ranging equipment could no longer track him. Considering how quickly he gained distance, he likely applied maximum power. The rumbling from his comm transmissions would indicate the same."
Tarkirov examines a map screen as he listens to your report.
: Hrm. That bearing would take him on a path straight towards Austerra itself. But surely he'd know he doesn't have the range to get there. But I have my doubts he'd be intending to ditch his plane if he was going that way, he'd be bailing out in a storm.

Walter enters the room and heads to the side to wait, seeing a conversation is currently in place.
: Lieutenant Ashford. Your commander says you could shed some insight as to why this man deserted.

Cualli, realizing that her break is more than over, reluctantly gets up and exits the rec room. She feels incredibly drained, still overwhelmed by the news and all of her conflicting emotions. She wants nothing more than to just retreat to her bunk and curl up, then wake up the next morning and find out that all of this has been one bad dream.

But it isn't, and Cualli, as she makes her way to the hangar with Elu in tow, hopes her supervisor won't scold her too harshly for being late.
As you make your way to the Hangar, you see Virvel walking towards you in the cramped hallways, with Frisk in tow. Instead of letting you pass, she grabs you by the collar and slams you against the wall, bumping your head against an exposed pipe in the process. Elu reaches into the tool compartment on his back and pulls out the holy book given to him by the monks, holding it in front of him like a shield.
: You helped him escape, didn't you?

Jaakko finds an intercom and calls for Lieutenant Ashford to report to the CIC.
"How one of your squadron members decided to take off and desert the mission. I'm saying they were even quicker to replac-"
Walter hears the intercom and slightly scowls
"Right, well I'll see you guys around. Sorry to be so brief."
Walter waves and then begins heading off to the CIC
: Later.

Lorens arrives shortly after Rikard and comes up besides him.

"Colonel, Sky Marshall," he addresses his superiors, "Lieutenant Lorens Zaman, reporting. I was one of the last two pilots to have flown in formation with Arkhip, and I believe I have an approximation of his last known location and vector."
: Go on.

Walter approaches the two recruits and introduces himself

"So I take it you two are the new fill for Djuriskas? high command must've had a hunch to get you in now."
: A hunch? What do you mean?

"I believe he said something about his reasoning, but I was engaged with the Imperial squadron. Lieutenant Ashford was attempting to talk him down at the time, if I recall correctly. As for where he was heading, I think he was skirting around the dogfight to the south, and then split in some direction. I was engaged, and couldn't pay attention. I suggest bringing Lieutenant Ashford up here, sir,"
Remembering he still needed to be debriefed, Lorens slowly gets up from his seat and walks to the CIC.
As Crash finishes talking, Lorens and Kommandant arrive in the CIC.
: Sir, there's a problem. Orlov deserted his post and took-
: Took four Thunderbolts with him, I know. Major Kirves already told me. If you have any idea where or why he left, I advise you make it known.
: I don't know, sir. He's always been a recluse but none of us ever had him pegged for a deserter.
: Kirves. Bring Lieutenant Ashford here, I want to hear what he has to say.

Walter scratches his head for a moment and then speaks up

"I guess I'll go introduce myself to your two new recruits then, wonder if they give your squadron the same type of guys we get."
Pansar just grunts and shrugs. You see the two recruits are standing with each other checking damage to their planes.

apparantly event horizon (movie from 1997) has been seen as kind of a prequel to this series
in 40k, FTL involves tearing a rift open and flying through a dimension full of malevolent psychic entities
in event horizon, the characters respond to a distress signal from a prototype FTL ship on its maiden voyage after a malevolent psychic entity influences everyone on board to do terrible terrible things to each other
the art direction is also pretty similar
