He probably used Paint.NET, maybe Adobe Photoshop. Just Google something like "Transparent .PNG .GIF images" or something like that.

VERY LATE EDIT: I thought he meant the forum avatar, not the one in the picture lol.

I beat Eye of the Tiger on Guitar Hero with the easy difficulty. Basically all of my musical talent was displayed in that performance.
