If id didn't support it, they wouldn't make sequels and they wouldn't put out novels and they wouldn't sell it on their page. Obviously such a grand example of awesomeness deserves money, so they support it. TO. GET. MONEY.

People still play Doom online and make new WADs for it. With such a thriving community, the game is hardly abandonware.

Abandonware is software that is no longer supported by the producing company, hence the "abandon." Obviously, id Software still supports Doom and Heretic, making them NOT abandonware.
