Suggestions & Requests / More Buildable Vehicle chassis
« on: January 05, 2013, 12:37:30 PM »
This is not directed directly at Truce, it's meant for any other modders willing to take up the idea.

The buildable vehicle is without a doubt one of the cooler add-ons in Blockland's history. However, there's currently only one "chassis" that you can build on as of right now. This limits vehicle design (and maybe performance), so what I'm suggesting is, simply put, more chassis. It could be as simple as moving the wheels inside of the current vanilla chassis, or a whole version to build on! Here is a simple example of a new idea for a buildable vehicle body.

As Truce put it in his topic:
P.S. Other chassis shapes, flying buildable vehicles, etc are all possible with this method. This is just a start. Let's make sure this script is as good as it can be and then we'll move forward into expanding the possibilities. As such, please do not post these suggestions in the topic, as they will not be addressed yet.

Also from his topic:
Original .blend files for modders to reference to make other chassis (by Truce)

It was mentioned by Truce that the script should still be checked before trying to make new chassis, but I just wanted to suggest it anyway.
Thanks for reading.

General Discussion / Weird lighting issues: Shaders changing dim lights?
« on: November 20, 2012, 04:21:51 PM »
If you have a light pack such as Cityz' lights (the example used here), you may have noticed this weird issue. Since it's with an Add-on, I figured it'd be best to post it here since it doesn't really belong in Help.

The main issue is that with shaders on, the default lights become absurdly bright, whereas without shaders they return to their non-shader softness. If I try to use a slightly dimmer version of the Player's Light, for instance, the light vanishes outright with shaders at minimum.

Default player's light with shaders at minimum.

Default player's light with shaders off.

Player's light dim with shaders at minimum.

Player's light dim with shaders off.

If someone could post an explanation, or preferably, a fix, that'd be nice. Thanks.

Gallery / Vehibuild: free vehicles! Now with Mediafire!
« on: October 29, 2012, 10:36:21 AM »
A whole bunch of low-quality vehicles and whatnot.

Originally it was my own project, but some of the vehicles I built on Wehrmacht's request (though I forgot to actually give it to him until much later). I've had this for a while now and I wanted to give it to [pd] but I don't think it got accepted or Eksi never saw the PM I sent. It has lots of stuff but whether or not to use it is up to you.

Other threads with individual stuff in this build:
http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=145266.0
http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=142664.0

Add-ons include:
Trueno's colorset
Tophius's bricks
"Fan" prop (Don't have it? Get it here!)
JVS Switches n' doors.
Tall cylinder bricks

If there's anything missing, do tell. Have fun!
Criticism is also appreciated.

Off Topic / The Terrible Secret of Space

We are the Space Robots. We are here to protect you.

It's old (really old) but I figured I'd put this here anyway because there didn't appear to be a thread dedicated exclusively to the terrible secret of space.

General Discussion / Invisible Bricks: Yea or Nay?
« on: September 30, 2012, 11:24:10 AM »
Oftentimes when I'm building, I try to go for a sense of 'structural integrity', a  sense that what I'm building would be able to support itself if I built it out of real Lego parts, or if t were an actual object. However, when it comes to building certain things, such as vehicles, odd or highly detailed structures, or things that rely on being small, I wind up using invisible bricks, which isn't exactly irksome or bad, but which sometimes makes me feel as if I'm not doing the best I can without 'cheating' a little.

For instance, if I were to build a rock face out of 8x cubes and wanted a wooden catwalk on it, if I were to try and build the catwalk directly into the side of an 8x cube, I couldn't- the 8x cube is too big, and I'd have to break the cube up into smaller bricks to fit in the supports for the catwalk. If I used invisible bricks, I could simply make an invisible support beam or set of beams to actually hold up the catwalk, and then make fake supports that look like they're going into the rock face. While the solution with invisible bricks is more brick-efficient, it doesn't give me the sense that what I'd built could actually hold itself up. If I build the catwalk without invisible bricks, it'll be more brick-intensive and potentially more ugly, but it would be able to support itself in reality, giving a sort of feeling of solidness and adding a bit of realism(?).

TL;DR
Sometimes you can use invisible bricks to do stuff more efficiently or effectively than by building everything solidly, but it doesn't feel right and gives the impression that the build couldn't stand or exist in real life or without those bricks (to me, that is).

How do you feel about using invisible bricks? Why?

Help / Blockland myseriously crashing/not crashing?
« on: August 22, 2012, 03:28:10 PM »
For some reason, when I first started Blockland today, it crashed shortly after the launcher had finished. I decided to try and use the launcher again a few times, sometimes getting a normal-looking successful launch and other times getting a crash. Could someone tell me what's going on?

Help / Blockland crashing/not crashing mysteriously?
« on: August 22, 2012, 03:17:49 PM »
For some reason, when I tried to start up Blockland today, it crashed after the launcher had finished. I tired again a couple of times, and then it worked. I tried this again a few times to see what was happening, with varied results. A console.log of a crash is below. Can someone tell me what's going on?

Gallery / Floaty island house
« on: July 12, 2012, 12:36:22 PM »
A house on a floating island in the Bedroom. The house is tethered to the bed and isn't supported by any other bricks than the tether rope itself.

All doors are evented except for the glass ones. The ladder in the basement is evented as well.

Help / How to make custom brick textures work?
« on: July 12, 2012, 11:15:37 AM »
I tried installing Manty's Brick Textures, but thanks to an update a while back it's now impossible to add non-add-on content to the game without it being rewritten. Could anyone help me?

General Discussion / What motivates you to build?
« on: June 15, 2012, 07:40:52 PM »
Well, what gets you motivated? Everyone who builds has something or other behind them, be it boredom, or the wish to realize some idea. What is it that gets you to start building, imagining new concepts, or trying new techniques and styles?

I just build because it's fun and interesting to try and figure out how to build something to your taste (along with other stuff).

What gets you building?

Gallery / Giant Blockhead Statue(s?)
« on: May 06, 2012, 08:42:34 AM »
A pair of Giant Blockhead statues. They're a little off-scale, though that might just be because the arms aren't leaning 'forward' slightly like the actual Blockhead's does. The title is the way it is because one of them, the one to the right, was duped and repainted, so I''m not sure whether or not to consider it an actual build. This was my first attempt at recreating the blockhead in bricks. Built with default bricks and colorset.

Statue no. 1. Built without duping (except for the head, which needed to be moved for modification.)

Statue no. 2. This one was duped, then repainted to look like the default player instead of a bot.

A bot for scale and a hand, built as a test.

A small info-pedestal. One of these is at the foot of each statue and has its own message.

Foot detail.

Hand detail. I could've used one single 2x6x3 brick to fit the hand, but I decided to try and make the hand seem like it had fingers.

Head detail. I first tired to make the head with 'sunken' features that would've more easily captured the Blockhead's smile, but that looked weird, so I decided instead to simply make the head's face look 'blocky' or pixel-y.

So yeah. Give criticism on these awful statues. Ratings appreciated.

Help / People can't join my server?
« on: April 10, 2012, 10:36:58 AM »
For some reason, people have been saying they can't join my server. My internet connection seems just fine, but whenever I check my server on the server list, it's listed as not having a ping. Could anyone tell me what's going on?

General Discussion / Will V21 fix brick lighting issues?
« on: April 08, 2012, 06:15:22 PM »
With v21 coming and all, it's pretty neat to see that Blockland's lighting will be redone. My question, though, is whether or not v21 will fix brick lighting issues. For example:

  • Lights from bricks shine through other bricks
  • Only a limited number of brick lights can be seen at once, and that number is very small. Demonstrated in this old video.

So, will v21 fix these or not?

Help / How to open a dedicated server?
« on: April 06, 2012, 10:42:17 AM »
I've been trying to open a dedicated server, but I can't find the file to open one in my Blockland folder. Could someone help me figure this out?

Gallery / Default Deathmatch.
« on: April 05, 2012, 01:07:46 PM »
A crude and ugly little deathmatch set at a medieval crossroads. Built entirely with default bricks.

Players are given a sword and shield and a bow. Should I host it?
