The meta so far is just put a stuffload of the best guns possible and stack armor and DPS the stuff out of everything. I hope the next tier of guns fixes that.

what's the technic launcher

so if i wanted to play on OP's server, i would have to download a package full of mods?

You would download the FTB launcher, select the monster pack, and it would download all the mods for you. It takes forever to launch but it's pretty end user friendly.

I'm still suspicious, but either way, nobody gains anything out of this. Thorfin gains nothing from pretending to die and we don't gain stuff from denying that he did. Elaborate hoax or surprising tragedy, it doesn't really matter in the end.
