« on: April 10, 2017, 02:06:48 PM »it actually isn't; there's no huge demand for a lot of professional jobs since the market is already flooded with unemployed college graduates (degree inflation) whereas skilled trades are rising in demand as the handy baby boomers are beginning to retirethis is a lot better wording that what tony was putting out
the fact that our society keeps pushing the idea that you need to go to college only adds to the issue, and kids' stress levels. schools (and parents) don't encourage kids to consider a skilled trade, they just throw standardized tests at them (and even classes to prepare for those tests) meant to scale their worthiness for particular colleges. so they grow up thinking of trade jobs as an underpaying and/or universally undesirable last resort. half a decade into a trade job and you could be making 50-60k easy without the +80k debt
obviously a strong portfolio could still convince an employer to dismiss a lack of a degree. "college is a waste of time but you need a degree to do anything" i swear if you're living off welfare.......
i understand your point, we should emphasise every job throwing people into university.
but on the other hand, tony thinks university is bs so ill just quit rn and go be a NASA engineer or design bridges that will fall on people
