General Discussion / Re: Dglider's Brick-making Service.
« on: May 08, 2014, 09:35:54 AM »
Ok, so to summarize.

tails thinks its too expensive(either that or he thinks it's too low, but I doubt that.)
fab got banned
toxicology said something probably just related to fab
sir dooble thinks the pricing system is weird, and is concerned about the legitimacy of the service
I'm unsure if Furdle was being positive or sarcastic
I attempted to clarify exactly how the service would work, and why the pricing would remain the way it is
Dre5567 doesn't understand that paying per hour usually means paying per hour of work.
heedicalking doesn't like the prices and is concerned over the legitimacy of the service
Pah1023 doesn't agree with the pricing system, or understand it.
cassord thinks it's a scam
Subpixel thinks the bricks are sub-par
sir dooble still doesn't like the pricing system
Aduioa doesn't understand why he should pay for someone's time
JakeBlade doesn't understand why he should pay for someone's time
Renderman posted something related to fab getting banned
I attempted to clarify how paying by the hour works, what you pay for when buying things in general, and attempted to give legitimacy to sir dooble's concerns, since he seems to think things through more than others.
heedicalking still doesn't like the pricing and doesn't think the service is legitimate
TristanLuigi doesn't like the pricing.
McZealot doesn't want to pay for bricks <--first legitimately expressed concern.
Ducky duck wouldn't buy the bricks, but would buy the teachings
Daswiruch is the same
Bomb Kirby is the same.
Aduioa thinks the op is stupid.

All of this has been noted.  If anyone has questions on how this service works please feel free to ask them.

it isn't silly. you said it yourself that harder bricks take longer to make, and therefore it winds up costing more. it's basically just taking your shady, crappy hours system and solidifying it into a solid sort of deal. you assume a difficult brick takes 3 hours, so you charge for 3 hours instead of 'hoping' it takes 3 hours. the only "silly" thing here is the thought that you'd actually try to make a payment deal with someone before they even know what it costs.
There is no payment deal until the brick is finished.  The customer requests a brick, I make the brick, I tell them it's done, show pictures etc, and request payment, they send payment, I send the brick.  There is no reason for me to keep the brick once it's been paid for.  Any shady dealing would be quickly reported on the forums.

there's not a single legit service that i've seen run like this. even other similar request services i've seen/used had a flat price, or a price negotiated BEFORE work starts. here how about I put things into a more reasonable perspective. this girl offers a similar service, except with sheet music. there's a flat price, regardless of the song difficult or "hours POSSIBLY spent" working on it. you add 10 to the price for songs over 8 minutes. if you want the sheet music fully arranged and playable, it costs more than just having the song done. now imaging if she charged per hour spent working on a song (she even stated herself that they can take a long time to make). prices would be completely unreasonable and she'd just be able to say "oh sorry it took a LONG time i'm going to have to charge you more!!". then would arise the problems of "oh well I doubt you worked THAT hard you're just trying to make us pay more!" and "oh I DID work hard you have to trust me!!".
If the girl said that, I'm sure I wouldn't buy from her again.  This isn't a big city where the customers just keep coming.  It's a relatively small community where word spreads fast.

having flat rates makes sense, or at least have a scale that can be determined before work actually starts. Say someone wanted a pyramid brick. You'd factor in the detail of the brick, collision mesh, grid build-ability, texture complexity, and script extent, then come up with a breakdown and explain why it costs that much and how long it might take. That's what a legit service would do. You don't just hope it doesn't take long and charge extra if it does.
Once I have enough experience to know how long it takes to make each type of brick I'll consider a flat rate payment system.

to be completely honest i would not pay money for a brick
it's extremely easy to package, and lots of users are willing to model basics shapes for free

if its something like a gun model, it's more understandable
That makes sense.  If it was something simple, and you were willing to work through all of the errors yourself, it would make sense to do it yourself.  Most people don't know jack about this type of thing though. :\

Add-Ons / Re: Brick_Door_Plain_Diagonal

If you're wondering why it's fat.
Our player collision boxes don't rotate.  And if you:
Take a cube and fit it through a square hole in the wall that's just slightly bigger than the cube.
Rotate the cube 45 degrees along the z-axis.
Try to fit the cube through the hole.  The cube will not fit.

tldr;It needs to be fat if you want to fit through it.

I agree with heed with this, three dollars for something that may only take 15 minutes is a bit ridiculous.
If something takes 0.25 hours it costs 0.25*$3.00, so 75 cents.  Paypal takes 32 cents(0.30+0.75*0.029) of that leaving me with 43 cents.

*Walks into store*
*Wants to buy candy*
*Is charged based on how long it took for the transaction to finish*
I don't see how that's related.  I'd be charging for the time and resources it took to make the candy, not for how long it takes for me to fiddle around with your coins. :\

I can see your point.  But I don't yet know how long each brick takes to make.  I can add in those figures later but for now it's a price for time spent.

As far as difficulty goes I'd rather not charge for that.  Seems silly to me.

Add-Ons / Brick_Door_Plain_Diagonal
« on: May 07, 2014, 06:17:45 PM »
This brick was requested here.
It's a diagonal door, similar to the default "plain" door.

You can download it here.

I had a little trouble wrenching or painting bricks that are inside of it's bounding box.  So be careful.

Alright, I finished the brick grid collision.
Here's the link again(it's the same but whatev): http://www.mediafire.com/download/j8pdxo2t33q2roc/Brick_Door_Plain_Diag.zip

I'll post this in the add-ons section as well.

Sorry, why would you charge per hour for making bricks?

How on earth are we to know whether a brick should take an hour or more to make? Are we just to trust you?
Because in that same description you explain how you might just spend your time playing Minesweeper.
Why would we pay you for an hours work when you might slack off, or you might claim it took you longer?

If you're going to charge money for making bricks then charge a price per brick.
If something will obviously take more time then discuss that with the person.
The time it takes to make each brick varies greatly depending on the type of brick.  A 6x6 cube takes less than 5 minutes.  Most of the time will be spent packaging it up and making an icon.

However, a textured pyramid may take the better an hour since I have to:
Make the base model
Make the mesh model(remove any extra unneeded faces)
Make the collision model(basic shapes, anything super-fancy won't work)
Export & convert the mesh model to blb
Export & convert the collision model to .dts
Write the script to load it
Test ingame
Fix errors, missing faces etc.
Add textures, usually by trial and error.
Write the brick-grid collision
Test again
Fix errors, possibly redo entire sections.
Make icons
Test
Package it up all pretty like
Post online or whatever

That 6x6 cube would take:
Write .blb file by hand since it's literally like, two lines.
Write script to load ingame
Test
Make Icon
Test again
Package it up all pretty-like.
Post online or whatever.

Yes, if you want me to make you a brick, you'll have to trust me on the time it took.  I'm not going to charge you for the time I spend playing minesweeper or watching Youtube.

Ok so here's the deal.

1. People want custom bricks.
2. I can make custom bricks.
3. I would rather be doing other things.
4. I have a paypal account.

SO- if you would like me to make you a brick, here are my
-Rates-

$3.00/hr - Brick(low priority)
I make the brick whenever I'm feeling bored.  If I'd rather play minesweeper I'll be doing that.
$7.80/hr - Brick(high priority)
I'll work on the brick when I CAN.  Mandatory events and real life stuff still take precedence.
$8.80/hr - Teachings
I'l teach you to make the brick yourself.  This requires that your computer is beefy enough to run some sort of screen-viewing software such as teamviewer or skype.  And that you can run blender.

-Past Stuff-
I've done all of this stuff:
Brick_Extra65
Brick_ModTer_8xCornerCFix
Brick_QuarterRoad
Brick_QuarterRoadXtraRamps
Brick_Door_Plain_Diagonal
Old brickmaking tutorial(inefficient)

I've also made some other stuff, such as a tunnel brick that adapts to the tunnel bricks around it.  So you can just use 1 brick to make a tunnel without having to fill up your inventory with other stuff.  But I never released that since the bricks were just placeholders at best.

-Contact-
You can contact me through BL forums or email.
My email is: dgliderglide@gmail.com

Your message should contain:
Your Name, ingame or otherwise.  Whatever you want me to call you.
Your email.
What you're requesting, brick(low priority), brick(high priority), or Teachings.
If you're requesting a brick.
Describe the brick/bricks.  Include pictures or drawings if possible.

-Payment-
We're using Paypal here.  You do not need an account to pay, but you do need some sort of credit card.  Paypal accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.  I'll send an invoice to your email, which has a button you can click to pay.  It's pretty standard stuff.  Once I have recieved the funds, I'll send you the brick.  Either through a mediafire link, or an attachment.

If we're working with something big, such as a large complicated brickpack, I'll ask that you pay some upfront.  More to confirm that you can pay than anything else.

-Refunds-
If you catch me after I have received the funds but before I have sent the brick, I will refund most of your money.  Paypal takes $0.30+%2.9 from every transaction I receive.  During a refund they give back the %2.9, but you'll still be out 30 cents.

If I have already sent the brick, it's no refunds.

-Not Refunds-
If you cannot pay, please don't bother requesting anything.  Even if I end up making the brick I won't be giving it to you until I get paid.

Anyhow- that's it.  gl hf

Fixed.
You're right that the collision is .dts, but I was referring to how the door has to be fat since our player collision boxes don't rotate.

Take a cube and fit it through a square hole in the wall that's just slightly bigger than the cube.
Rotate the cube 45 degrees along the z-axis.
Try to fit the cube through the hole.  The cube will not fit.

Modification Help / Re: Server_VIPMOD
« on: April 25, 2014, 01:15:23 PM »
I've never understood why people want extra special positions on their servers that mock admin status. It does not benefit the server at all and is literally a pointless extra datablock to make other "special" users feel above the rest of the crowd. If you are going to give out special positions on your server think about this: Do I trust this person enough to give them admin? If the answer is no, then they should not be given any other special things (ie mod or VIP). A good administrator does not need a "Test" in order to prove themselves a worthy admin, their actions as a regular user should more then demonstrate their abilities to act in the correct manner to administrate a server. This is just another way for hosts to put their friends above other people who might like the server just as much as them.
I think a mod like this would be useful if you have friends who are irresponsible.  So like, I have friends that I have known for years, and I would trust with admin.  But then I have another group of other friends who basically just like to richard around and screw things up.  They're entertaining and fun to hang out with, but I would by no means want them to have any extra power on my server.  But they're still special, and I'd like them to feel that way, so- VIP.  It literally means "Very Important Person".

Super Admin is for the guy who helped you set up the server and knows just as much or more than you.
Admin is for the people you trust to keep things running smoothly.
Moderator is for the people you don't trust yet, but who expressed an interest in helping things run smoothly.
VIP is for the people who you think are important, but you wouldn't trust them to bring you a can of soda without shaking it up first.

A VIP mod just adds an extra level of recognition.

If you wanted to add extra levels of power, I highly suggest the permissions mod.  The last time I checked the ui was still kind of clunky, but other than that it works perfectly.

I really like your line of thought.  It's not a dismissive line of point-blank stupidity.  :D

I think I'll watch more closely what you say in the future.

I saw a video where someone went around asking people on the street if they were athiests.  It got me thinking about whether I was an atheist or not.  So I wrote down some of my thoughts on that.  Enjoy if you want.  If you tend to get upset or highly emotional over things like this please don't bother.  I'm more interested in rational thought than your feelings on the matter.

Google Doc - AIAA

This thread has run it's course.  I certainly feel much more informed on what an atheist is now. :D
