The HammerHost web site is currently not working, since I am trying to implement SSL.

What for?

This is a really awesome first addon, well done!

I have built my own computer one year ago and modified and upgraded another one recently.
[ size=14pt]It was because the fan failed, not the CPU! It runs below 40° C on a 24/7 basis. Anything above 60° C is not good.[/size]

A desktop computer is not the same as a server class computer. You see in a server class computer, you have redundancies not only in power supplies but in cooling as well. So say one fan packs up, there is another there ready to take over the cooling load. You simply cannot compare a desktop to a server. Stop comparing a desktop to a server!

Take one of my 1950s for example,

See the multiple hot swap fan packs? If one of those fail, the cpu will still have sufficient cooling, it'll also alert me so I can pop in a new one. No overheating. If all of them failed at once, and the cpu did get hot, I would get a critical warning and have time to sort everything out, it wouldn't just die.

It is also important to make sure no dust gets in, or at least clean it regularly.

Who uses those anymore? It's not 2006.

Mainly budget, you can pick one of these up in excellent condition for like £70 including rails
They're still pretty good for my visualization needs, I have two E5345s in it and it's still going strong

This is not usually true.

Umm, you clearly have no knowledge in this field. Servers are designed to run 24/7, to achieve this they have built in redundancies. You have had problems with overheating before, this is because the processor you are using is simply not fit for this purpose. The AMD FX series is a budget desktop line, they are not high performance, and no where near as reliable as, for example, intel Xeons.

My servers are run in an air conditioned, dust free environment. They are designed for server use (Poweredge 1950s). Please, if you're going to do something, do it well.

The current system has 2.1x the single-core power and at least 4 times as much total power as the old VPS. And it now has 12 GB RAM instead of 4. Plus unmetered bandwidth.

The old VPS cost $40/month while home-hosting costs < $55/month. It's an extremely good deal, although it may take 2 weeks for HammerHost to "stabilize" and the outages to go away.

Yeah but the node the vps was on was looked after, expansion would be easy.

Anyway, for $41, you can get a reliable VPS with guarenteed 6 cores at 3.2GHz, 16GB Ram, 800GB disk space on a 100Mbit/s line with windows server 2008 on. Thats cheaper than hosting at home and infinitely more reliable. It's a no-brainer to be honest.

That's server class hardware. Desktop class hardware is not designed to be run constantly, hence why it keeps failing on you.

I will not respond to any flame posts.

My post was genuine advice

87
Uhm, right now it does not look good...
The CPU fan appears to be clogged with something, and the machine is off.

After replacing the CPU fan, the machine fails to boot. Looks like the problem is a burnt-out CPU!

Why don't you get some decent hardware and look after it for a change? Or maybe rent a server from someone who knows what they're doing?

I can guarantee now that there will be no more free hosting.

No one would pay for a service that is as consistently unreliable as yours
