firstly, three 690s would suck ass with most games as it's literally 6 GPUs in three SLI cards

secondly, if i'm going to buy three 690s i'm not going to buy a 4.0ghz i5

thirdly, a transparent water cooled LED case would look trashy as forget

and finally, i'd buy EVGA's 1200w 80+ Titanium psu instead of a 1000w

unless this is a joke at which point add on another PSU for double power
Don't read too far into it. blockguy has next to no knowledge of computers, he essentially just namedropped what he thought were the fastest individual parts (lol)

Drama / Re: So, what've I missed?
« on: August 08, 2014, 04:33:29 PM »
Seems to me that most people are upset about blockland's lack of updates because a few small updates could go a really long way in terms of improving the overall game. I certainly don't disagree, but it doesn't warrant demanding/expecting badspot to do it. I got my money's worth 100 times over. And the same as anyone who tries to work on big projects for anything, it's very difficult to keep yourself motivated. Considering that most of the responses he gets about the development of the game are negative, I don't blame him in the slightest

- The K-version slipped my mind. I've edited the original build.
- This isn't a budget build though. If their budget was $600 or less I'd have no problem using AMD parts. The case, despite the low pricetag, fits all the requirements. The case has 5/5 Eggs, over 2,400 reviews, fits the motherboard, comes with fans included, comes from a well known manufacturer, and has plenty of space for drives.

As for the rest, I guess they don't need to up their budget.
Truth of the matter is, every build is a budget build unless it doesn't have a budget. Have you ever built with a $50 rosewill case? I have. It wasn't terrible, but cable management was non-existent and the motherboard standoffs tore through the motherboard tray when mounting the mobo. I don't even have to click on the link to know that all of the positive reviews say "good for the money". It probably is. But with not a lot more, you could get a case that is just plain "good"
Such as this one

Also, (didn't see this before), might be a good idea to switch the z87 motherboard out for the z97 one. The upgrade is worth it for better bios support and possibly adding m2 storage options in the future, otherwise it's the same

79
Easy.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690
Mobo: ASRock Fatal1ty H87 Performance
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB)
GPU: EVGA SuperClocked GeForce GTX 770 2GB
PSU: Rosewill HIVE Series HIVE-750 750W (It may be overkill but it was cheaper than other 650W PSUs)
Case: Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
A few minor things wrong with this, pretty good build overall

- There's no reason why you shouldn't buy the K-version of a cpu you spend more than $200 on, $10 more for possibly 30% increase in cpu perf
- You stubbornly keep recommending nvidia cards for budget builds, and cut costs in other areas like cases. $30 not spent on an identically performing gpu could go a long way in terms of a nicer case

If you increase your budget to $1000 you'll be able to upgrade 1 of 3 things:
1) Upgrade the i5 to an i7
2) Get a 4GB 770 instead of a 2GB
3) Upgrade the RAM to 16GB
More serious issues here

- What performance benefits do you think there will be adding 2gb of vram at 1080p?
- There's no need for buying 16gb of ram, the only reason you would get more than 8gb is if you know for a fact you use up 8gb on a daily basis

An Intel Core i7-4790 because it'll increase your performance in practically everything.
I take most issue with this

- Same problem as before with not getting the k-series cpu
- If you're citing that spending $100 more on this cpu is justified for general performance increases, you're wrong. The major differences between the i5-4690K and the i7-4790K is that the i7 comes with hyperthreading enabled, a mb or two of extra L3 cache, and a higher stock speed. Getting the unlocked version of either chip negates the stock speed advantage. You won't notice any speed difference without 1MB of L3 cache. And since general performance applications (such as navigating the OS and opening webpages) are all singlethreaded, there will be absolutely no difference, and you will have spent a tenth of your budget on something that doesn't affect your percieved experience at all. The i7 is for heavily threaded desktop apps, such as video encoding.

In terms of exclusives, pc has better ones. Don't think you can get microsoft office on an xbox, as lucrative to ms as it may be.

I'm actually interested in what's causing the microjittering at the bottom. Lack of dampening? Friction?
The main loop updates at 200fps, so that's 5 ms between updates. Gravity is applied every 5ms, which accelerates each particle to some velocity. Even if it might theoretically collide with the bottom in 1ms, the full 5ms delta v is applied, and then it bounces up with a dampened upwards velocity and makes it to the same height before main loops again.

The solution I'll be implementing is a time solver for collisions, as opposed to a lower elasticity value or minimum rebound value. Both of the latter would work fine but they're workarounds, and finding the time of collision also makes for more robust collision between everything else so I might as well do it right

Any criticism or suggestions welcome.

Uhh, that build is crazy unbalanced yo

Add me on steam steve
Also I know what's causing the microjittering at the bottom, just haven't fixed it yet

9d 3h

I only restart my computer when windows has updates or there are issues. I don't even put my computer to sleep, I just lock my account and then the screen falls asleep at some point

85
You may have a point though when you say he doesn't need an expensive PSU; as long as it's reliable until his computer becomes obsolete, it's probably good enough.
Yes... That's my point...

86
I have to disagree about the power supply, though; $65 is less than a tenth of the cost of the whole computer, which isn't a lot especially considering that it's the most important component in a build. That being said, the Cooler Master V550SM is probably a better choice for the money.
Right, but my point was that you could spend $35 or $45 and get the same quality components and wattage, just without the gold efficiency. There are a lot of well-rated bronze 500W psus out there on the cheap

So you're saying ~185% isn't enough insurance? Sheesh... I don't know a lot about computers, but I know about electricity, and that just doesn't seem right. Anyway, I'll look into.
Components regularly draw more power than they're listed at. The average power draw under full load is their rating, but it spikes up and down. You'll want to aim at maximum usage being close to 50%, because that's also the range where your psu is most efficient.

To be honest I think you're better off using my build. The video card is a bit weaker, but it's easily replacable if you need an upgrade and the other components will likely last you 6+ years. If you're really concerned about the graphics performance you could always use the IGP until you can afford the 760.
I disagree. The gpu is just too underpowered, and he doesn't need a great cpu. He did specify that he wanted a card with 2gb vram and he didn't want to use the IGP, so that leads me to believe he has more use for better graphical processing. Also, for an $800 dollar budget there's no need to spend $100 on an ssd and no hard drive.

Plexious' build is better, but still not super great because he cheaped out on several things that he didn't have to and still decided to use a 760 instead of an R9 280 (which performs better for $10 - $20 less). Your build is actually probably the closest.

Get your build with an R9 280 instead of the 760, use pentium's ram and motherboard, and find a nice psu with 500 or 550. Don't use pentium's psu unless you're a real efficiency freak, nobody needs a gold rated psu on an $800 budget

Unlocked processor, decent motherboard, high-quality semi-modular PSU and an alright graphics card for $830 /w rebates. Lose the DVD burner or re-use your old one and drop that by $15.
Don't get a 750 ti. Even if you get another nvidia card, don't get a 750 ti, it's a waste of money if you're buying a new psu anyway and you're not building for an htpc

These things have a way of working themselves out. The price is going to keep going down because people are going to start selling off their keys because they see the price going down and panic. Then after it bottoms out (idk when) it will go back up again
