I can see why people like the MLP show, but why the avatars?

Avatars are to be chosen by the forum account owner, deal with it.

The only conclusion I can figure out is that they're trying to be cool by band wagoning, but that just seems so unlikely.

Very unlikely. Just because you don't admit and accept that we like a show, you think that we just follow others around trying to be cool. Granted, a few people do that, but not everybody.
