Suggestions & Requests / Modular music support
« on: May 23, 2015, 05:50:40 AM »
Let's face it, music files are big.  If you choose to download everything from a server, music loops can take far longer than anything else, and with a filesize cap at 1 megabyte, they can't really be any longer than about two minutes.  Obviously this has its share of drawbacks.

As a partial solution, why not add support for music modules?  These include .MOD, .XM, and .IT formats.  They're widely supported by advanced media players like WinAMP and VLC, and they have a tendency to be very small files.  I'm talking in the ballpark of 100 kb, and filesize only depends on the instrument samples used; length is practically indefinite.  Basically, they are perfect for quick sharing.  There is a drawback, in that they can't be simply converted from WAV or MP3; they have to be arranged or composed from scratch, or converted from another sequenced music format like MIDI.  Still, it would be a nice alternative to OGG Vorbis for cases where you might want a long piece of high-quality music in a small filesize.

Off Topic / Looking for an old game someone posted
« on: May 08, 2015, 01:59:40 AM »
A friend of mine is looking for this one game someone posted 3-5 years ago.

Quote
There is this game some kid made who uploaded it to blockland forums. It was some side scroller game of some guy jumping over barfing hobos and shooting aliens and black people. Do you know what game that is? It was ghetto as hell and I can't find it.

Quote
I dont even know the name of the game
but my guess is any off-topic section
this guy posts some like flash game or something he made
which you have to download
and you're shooting like black people and whatever
and barfing hobos
and floating heads
and I want to play that game again
you might have to make a topic to find it

Anyone remember anything like this?

Games / Prehistoric-themed early 90's games
« on: April 04, 2015, 06:38:34 AM »
Why are there so many of them?  It seems like an oddly specific concept for there to be so many cartoonish platform games from the late 80's and early 90's with a prehistoric or dinosaur-themed setting, usually with cavemen too.

Some examples:
  • Bignose the Caveman
  • Bonk (series)
  • Chuck Rock (series)
  • Caveman Ugh-Lympics*
  • Joe & Mac (series)
  • Prehistorik (series)
  • Radical Rex
  • Super Mario World (borderline case)
  • Trog*

*Not a platformer but it fits the mold

It seems like they were extremely popular for a while and then completely ceased existence.  What started all this?

« on: September 19, 2014, 08:27:23 AM »
Avast, ye scurvy dogs!  In honor o' this greatest o' holidays, International Talk Like A Pirate Day, I've assembled a fine crew o' 18 music loops, all bein' quite nautical in nature, or at least havin' something t'do with pirates.  All o' these loops are me own handiwork, with the one exception o' Gloomy Galleon, which I so deftly pilfered from Electrk's Donkey Kong 64 Music Pack.

Off Topic / Considering taking commissions for music, need advice
« on: August 31, 2014, 05:50:41 PM »
Hey BLF.  I hope this comes across positively.

Several factors have recently lead me to consider that it wouldn't be entirely unreasonable to start a new business: Fulfilling requests for original music compositions in exchange for money.

The only problem is, I'm not really sure how to go about this.  I've never really done anything business-related before.  It's apparent people like/want my music, and I have ways receiving payment, but I don't really know where to go from here.  Mostly I don't know where to find people who would be interested in original music for a project and willing to pay ~50 bucks per minute.

I'm aware asking BLF for advice on anything is often futile, but can any of you offer me any help?

Here's what you do: Google the phrase "[your first name] the hedgehog", quotation marks and all, and post what horrifying abominations you find.

Off Topic / Any good, lighthearted "westerns"?
« on: August 07, 2014, 10:47:00 AM »
Let me make something perfectly clear: I love the wild west, but I'm not really fond of westerns.  Certain things about the aesthetics of the time and place really appeal to me.  Western films, on the other hand, have a tendency to be gritty, cynical stories where half the cast dies; not something I have a lot of interest in watching.  What I'm wondering is, what are some good, lighthearted films (or even other media) with a wild west setting?

Back to the Future Part III is a great example of what I'm talking about.  Its status as a "western" is debatable, but it's set (for the most part) in the wild west and features a slew of classic western tropes.  It's a fun, lighthearted film, to the point that there aren't even any explicit on-screen deaths.  It's maybe even a little too squeaky-clean, but I love it.

Add-Ons / Weapon_Poop

Poop

This weapon is a throwable ball of poop.  It's a simple edit of Demian's old snowball, and I think you'll agree that it's a really stuffty add-on.

Features

• Sorta nasty yellow-brown color
• Moderate damage -- 25 on direct hit, 25 from poop splash
• Gross splat sound effect

Credits

Demian (10334) - Original snowball
Plastiware (1118) - Poop modification
