Games / What control scheme do you use for old-school-type PC games?
« on: July 28, 2014, 01:22:31 AM »
I've noticed that for a lot of keyboard-based sidescrollers, a very common control scheme is to use the arrow keys to move, and the X and Z keys to jump and attack.  However, exactly which key is the "jump" key and which one is the "attack" key isn't consistent.  Cave Story even gives players the option to reverse these keys.  A common variation on this is to use the A and S keys as the jump and attack buttons, and the same inconsistency seems to apply.  A third variation, and apparently the default controls for many games made with Clickteam products, is to use Shift for jump and Ctrl for attack.  And then there are people who use WASD or even gamepads to play these kinds of games.

It got me thinking, just what is more common?  So I bring the question to you, BLF.  How do you prefer to play PC sidescrollers and emulators?

Seriously.  It feels like the Blockland equivalent of someone grabbing you by the collar and physically placing you where they want you.  Almost every time I've ever been fetched, it's been without warning, and it's interrupted something I was in the middle of doing.

Admins, please ask before fetching, or at least give me a goddamn warning.  It's rude as stuff.

AoT General / Age of Time is a metaphor for gender and loveuality.
« on: June 22, 2014, 08:30:23 PM »
Player characters represent femininity.  Monsters represent masculinity.

Players are free to explore the game world and hunt for gold in the swamps, woods, and fields, but are constantly pursued by monsters.  This represents feminism and its repression.

Players can fight monsters as well, but are defenseless without weapons or spells, and can otherwise only attempt to flee.  Trying to fight a monster with a sword but no shield usually results in the monster overtaking you, unable to repel him.  Monsters sometimes emit heart symbols upon killing a player.  This represents rape.

When successfully slain, most monsters drop gold.  Succumbing to the same violent urges as the monsters rewards you with money.  This is a metaphor for prostitution.

Music / PICKIN6
« on: June 17, 2014, 04:10:44 AM »
This MIDI came with a soundfont pack I downloaded.  It's called PICKIN6.mid, and it does not list any composer, arranger, source, etc.  So naturally I decided to render it with fancy soundfonts and make it into a BL loop.  It's a fast-pickin' banjo tune.  Enjoy!

Gallery / Enormous banjo
« on: June 14, 2014, 08:31:30 PM »
Built this on Badspot's Block Party.  Still there if you want to go see it.

It has no strings due to lack of suitable bricks, but every brick is evented and will centerprint the name of the banjo part when activated.

Okay, so here's the deal: We all know that music bricks can be used to give music to certain areas of builds.  Covering large areas with one piece of music is made much easier with long-range music brick add-ons as well.

However, this is a pretty stuffty way to accomplish area-specific background music, as volume varies depending on distance from the source brick, and depending on which way you're facing you may only hear the music in one ear or the other.  Server-wide music bricks accomplish even volume regardless of location, but obviously have unlimited range and cannot be used for specific areas.  There's also client-side 2D music events, but this requires clients to have the add-on in order to hear the event-based music.

What I'm wondering is if there's a way to get the best of both worlds; Music that only plays in specific areas, but is the same volume regardless of where you are and is heard from both sides regardless of direction.  I do know that Blockland used to allow stereo music loops, and said loops would work exactly as described when used.  Now it seems that Blockland recognizes stereo music datablocks and removes them automatically.  Would there be a way to accomplish this or something like it now?

Creativity / Chatters the Squirrel drawings & comics
« on: May 29, 2014, 07:50:40 AM »

Chatters is an anthropomorphic fox squirrel.  He loves food, music, and comfy hammocks, and mostly prefers to be left alone.  Though he's often outwardly lazy, selfish, and apathetic, he genuinely cares about his few friends and close family, and will stop at nothing to protect them when push comes to shove.  In fact, anger alone seems to turn him into an unstoppable force, contrasting his usual ineffectuality.

Oh yeah, and he plays a mean fiddle.  Like, seriously.

So I've started a blog.  I guess.  It's about video game music, but more specifically how it's used in games.  I've chosen kind of an odd game to cover for the first post, but I'll definitely be looking at more musically interesting ones later on.  Bubsy just happened to be on my mind.
