how do you make goomba-like enemies (stomping on them kills them) in gamemaker using only drag and drop elements

Try this

This will test if the player is the player is above the goomba, after which you can create a block of actions for how the goomba dies.

Alternatively, you can use this to check for vertical speed instead (the player has to be coming down on the goomba instead of going up into it or sideways)

This is assuming, of course, you're using default vspeed for character gravity and not some custom variable or just moving the character down.

what's with the light pixels around the outsides?

I assume you're referring to the anti-aliasing on the items' outlines.  I personally don't think it really works here with the dark background, but it's supposed to make the edges look smoother, which you can see around the one item that's selected.

The game you have going looks solid, but you should really look into ways of improving your art assets.  Even putting quality aside, it's really inconsistent how much certain objects stand out.  The trees and tanks are really bold and look like they should be solid foreground objects, but they're part of the background.  Inversely, the crates are really soft-looking, like they shouldn't be solid even though they are.

Ahoy, ye landlubbers!  Two years ago, I made a fine pack o' Pirate Music in honor of International Talk Like A Pirate Day.  Some o' you might remember some from me Ultimate Pirate forgetaround server.  Now I give ye a new 'un!  Thar be only 13 loops this time, and one o' them ain't even new.  Aye, I really scraped the bottom o' the ol' rum barrel for piratey music.  I even wrote four of 'em meself!  Still, I hope ye'll enjoy what thar be.  Just like last time, all are me own handiwork.
