There is a distinct difference between the two, and they both have extremely different meanings. If he's trying to praise someone for being new - he needs to choose the right one.

Understandable, however they evolved from the same origin, and I thin Swiss was just trying to say that the guy was new while using slang. I don't believe that that would be the part of a person's argument you get all hung up about anyhow.

To say it succinctly:

I bet he was just messing around.
