Off Topic / Starting a novel. PROGRESS: Page 9 - New Poll

So, kind of like NickTheSushi, I kind of want to start my own novel. I have wanted to begin writing my own book for at least a few years now. I have been thinking about a lot of different ideas, characters, reading a lot of books and just generally thinking about how I want the book to go. I really want to have it set in a sort of apocalyptic setting, with ruined buildings, small groups of populations, mercenaries, companies and organizations based on greed and killing, mutant animals, shortages and many other things. If you've played it, I want it to be in sort of a Fallout 3 style.
I just bought a notebook and fresh pencils and erasers to finally begin the skeleton of it. I really got inspired a few days ago when my neighbor across the street finished his book and it actually got published. It made me recognize literally anyone can write a book.
So, I want it to begin fairly normal. I was thinking along the lines of something, simple, interesting, descriptive, and totally plausible, more specifically a vehicle like a trophy truck speeding along through dirt plains.
I haven't gotten much in-depth thought about characters, major events or anything else, but I'm a good spontaneous writer. I never have a plan, I write with what seems would go next and I've been complimented several times on my writing. I never need drafts for essays, etc... you get the picture.
Anyway, if anyone helps in a major way, and if by some miracle I finish this, send it in and it gets published, I'll see to it you get a copy.
So, let's get started. Any ideas? :P
User Ideas - Summarized
Have a growing caravan. Start off with one character, search for survivors until the caravan grows. One character dies off in a battle with a mutant. Submitted by Lil D.
The main character looks for special skills in the survivors he finds to help benefit the rest of the caravan. Submitted by NickTheSushi.
Military group that rolls around hunting survivors and raiding territories and such for raiding reasons and personal gain. Submitted by Skip.
Roadblocks and checkpoints set up throughout the city by the military. Submitted by Dodger.
The main character appeals to people for safety and protection from the world, however, he has different plans behind his scheme and actually has a plan to end up a person who commits actions worse than those of the military. Submitted by Dodger.
Make the main character have an arrogant dream of conquering the current world, believing it would be quite easy. Have him dream of forming new conquering tribes to help him control, to make the world bow down before him. Have him step on the lives of others just to reach the top, but fall. He soon realizes he is not the only one with this dream and it would be a lot more complex than he thought, and he keeps falling. At one point he reaches a peak of his career and gets murdered by a "competitor." Sumitted by *Magick* Mage.
The story of a man on a mission in post apocalyptic Illinois, where in the ruins of Chicago. He stumbles across a few survivors. They band together and fight to survive. The group becomes close. One day, the main character stumbles across an amazing secret involving one of the group. A legend or blueprints or something of the sort that could pull the world out of its ravaged state. The next day, the group member vanishes, murdering 2 of the group members. together with his 3 remaining group members he sets out on an epic journey to retrieve the thing. Submitted by oht.
The caravan finds an old abandoned nuclear power plant, and once they look closer they discover a back room with a few nuclear weapons stored from an old testing area. Submitted by Meekl.
