Off Topic / looking to buy a < $40 gaming mouse
« on: May 14, 2015, 01:42:30 AM »
i'm in the market to pick up a new mouse because my current one is stuff - the little slidy feet things are sliding on the mouse, not my desk, the batteries like to inexplicably disconnect causing the mouse to fail (usually in the middle of a firefight, never outside of one), and the power switch has two modes - on, and "randomly goes off sometimes".
also, been playing some shooters and having more buttons on the mouse would be greatly useful

i've been looking at gaming mouses, and i came up with some ones that look okay, but they're really low price. good reviews, but i still want some other opinions, and maybe suggestions

i have a laundry list of things i would prefer in the mouse, sorted with priority at the top
  • needs to have quiet button presses - it doesn't have to come with this, i am completely capable of taking it apart and making the buttons quiet myself, but if i do, it must not damage the long term use of the mouse. this is part of why the feet are falling off my current one - i took them off to get at the screws, but now they aren't staying. i did expect that, but if i can avoid it in a future mouse somehow, that'd be great
  • 5+ buttons, but 8 or so is preferred. This is counting the 3 on every mouse (left, middle, right).
  • [0]i want to be able to pick it up in store to skip the shipping time. if the shipped version is going to be a dramatically better product, still list it
  • wireless is preferred for convenience, unless wired is leaps and bounds better. i've heard it's better, but i dunno nevermind that, i want a wired one
  • optical please
  • [0]no loving gaudy lights - i don't mind if they're on the bottom or under my hand, but i could
not stand it if it was lighting up the scroll wheel or something. i guess i could disconnect it while performing quieting surgery, so it's not a big deal.
  • muted color schemes - i don't need a ferrari, i'd prefer a spy car mouse
  • [0]i don't really care what the mouse looks like (you know, like those weird ones that look like transformers? i don't care if it looks like that or not)

you might note that the last 3 things could probably just be tied under "prefer utilitarian design," which is true. just wanted to drive it home that i don't want a flashy mouse.
i would prefer a mouse that doesn't look like it came from mars. don't let that stop you from suggesting them though. i'm sort of looking for volume here, not exactly accurate suggestions

most of these are mutable. if your suggestion misses most of these marks, but you absolutely love your mouse and would marry it if you could, feel free to suggest it

in my search i came up with this one and this one, and they both have good reviews, but there's two things off about each of them
the first one is apparently not programmable. what does this mean? can i not bind functions to these buttons ingame? i assume it just means you can't set the mouse buttons to emulate keyboard keys... but that's okay. i don't think i need that for compatibility, right?
the second is apparently 'small'. not sure how i feel about that, but i don't really claw grab my mouse, so i guess i prefer one that would fit my hand
both have no reviews about how quiet they are or how easy/safe it is to disassemble, and a quiet mouse is a major priority.
i'm tempted to just drop by a wal-mart and grab the first one i listed. it's literally $12, which is barely anything out of pocket, and it has some amazingly good reviews, but the 'lack of programming' is concerning me.

give me your mice suggestions

Off Topic / I need some assistance with a hamachi test
« on: April 02, 2015, 04:07:42 PM »
yeah so i just installed hamachi to fix a problem with udp multicast and server discovery not working in dungeon defenders, monaco, and a stuffload of other games at a lan party i was at a week or so ago, and i don't know if it's actually a valid fix
(BTW: really sucks when you're at a lan party and the games don't work)

anyway, what i need from you guys is someone with hamachi and any of the following games to add me on steam so i can try to join a game like it was a lan game - we link up in the hamachi, you host a server, i try to join it via the 'lan game' option or vice-versa

- blockland (not ideal, but it may work with similar methods so it might work)
- dungeon defenders
- monaco
- minecraft (also not ideal, i haven't got it installed)
- torchlight 2

i have a bunch of people on steam who have these games, but i don't know who has hamachi out of those people and i don't feel like being the guy who messages you randomly after never speaking to you ever for one thing

so yeah, if you've got hamachi and the above games, add me or message me on steam: lugnut1206

Suggestions & Requests / Request: MARBLE MAN's logic bricks add-on
« on: January 16, 2015, 12:44:17 AM »
i dunno if he ever released it. pretty sure he did, and the only one i could find is melting plastics presumably inferior version
it had wire bricks and stuff and you could control which wires were with what by painting them different colors

had a bunch of add-ons or something, like multiplexers and stuff

apparently easy to add new bricks too?

Drama / AvailsMew/AnimalSwivel - DoS attacker
« on: March 29, 2014, 10:35:14 PM »
[ Any logs I post in this topic can be verified by 5 forumers. ]
Everything started here: http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=253559.msg7353581#msg7353581
I added this individual into a Skype group chat I had going on quite a while ago, in preparation for a fun tabletop RP experience. One thing led to another, and I ended up not actually doing it until today.
Today I got everyone in the group together, scheduled a time, and made a Skype call to everyone in the group. An individual called "Che Ven" was a part of this Skype group.
I made the call, and Che Ven joined in. He also added about 10 different alts into the chat.

Here's some logs:
Quote
> [Saturday, March 29, 2014 12:49:31 PM Che Ven] Add my new account please

> [Saturday, March 29, 2014 12:51:15 PM lordfeline] Highly debatable
I kicked hf.xepherr as a test to check my kicking ability. Right around this time, over voice, Che Ven asked "how to run a perl script on CentOS?" (CentOS is a version of linux designed for use on server computers)  Apparently, Che Ven didn't care for me kicking people:

(I missed the bit about "Chargen" at the time, as I was trying to get 5 uncooperative individuals into one Skype call.) Anyway, I got tired of the BS with the dozen alts, so I kicked them all (manually, because you can't mass kick in skype?)

Fast forward a bit, the Skype call dies. I end up offline, and Skype is trying to reconnect. I don't know why, I'm checking some websites and they aren't opening up. I presume it's a DNS error, which I've been having quite a bit of trouble with my DNS recently - no, that's not it, Google Chrome reports the connection failed, not the DNS lookup... right as I'm about to use my alternate internet connection to check in on Skype and apologize for being unable to run the game, everything starts working again and I receive these messages:
Quote
> [Saturday, March 29, 2014 1:05:01 PM lordfeline] [1:05:01 PM] Conference call, duration 05:25.

> [Saturday, March 29, 2014 1:06:52 PM Che Ven] I GOT DOS FOR DAYS brother
> [Saturday, March 29, 2014 1:07:15 PM Lugnut] what a richard
As my internet connection fails for the second time, I log into my router and change my IP address so I can't be targeted anymore. My internet comes back, I resume the call, and forget about the problem for the next 7 hours having a great time.
I then remember the starfish, and decide to make a drama:
Quote
> [Saturday, March 29, 2014 7:51:07 PM Lugnut] does anyone know who Che Ven actually was?
> [Saturday, March 29, 2014 7:51:19 PM Cassord] yeah, who the forget is che ven?

[0]It was clearly a DoS. Not only did he flat out claim it to be one, he actually described the nature of it - additionally, since he claimed to be able to take me down for weeks at a time, he presumably was not concerned about the cost
  • I do not think he was related to the DDoS on my hosting service.
  • [0]I do not have logs of the attack, nor his IP address. However, I do have both Masterockets and Cassord who were there at the time and witnessed me going offline in correspondence with Che Ven's gloating.

Here is Cassord's verification that the logs I've posted here are accurate (he's banned or something, idk):
http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?action=profile;u=92286 (he put it at the bottom - "Lugnut's logs are accurate")
I'll try to convince Masterockets to post.

General Discussion / LugHost hosting -- Service shutting down (page 11)
« on: February 24, 2014, 06:23:21 PM »
LugHost - Keeping things moving like a lugnut, geddit?
(name is a work in progress)

LugHost is a quick and dirty, limited frills dedicated server hosting solution that intends to just get the job done.
The idea here is to launch quickly with minimal features and then build up over time to eventually become the finest dedicated hosting service Blockland has ever seen. Well, the first and second parts were definitely true. Only time will tell if I can actually create "the finest dedicated hosting service Blockland has ever seen."

One improvement that will be implemented right from the start is hosting on a Linux based server. Hosting solutions in the past used Windows servers, which are statistically more expensive and more prone to crashes and bugs, as well as being slightly harder to maintain. A Linux server allows for stability, easier management, is cheaper, and supports the open source movement.

However, there are three unfortunate catches with LugHost that I have to be honest and list up front:
  • I cannot run this service at a loss. I have limited savings, and I cannot justify spending time maintaining a service if I am not turning even the slightest profit. (Sidenote - estimations suggest I won't even be making minimum wage (which is about $8/hr), profit-wise.)
  • I have to raise the prices. Services in the past have run $6/month, I must unfortunately raise the prices to $8/month. This is counting the cheaper Linux server.
  • [0]I will not be using a dedicated server - I'll be using a virtual private server. However, the fact that I can choose precisely how many resources I need on a node (at any given time, growing or shrinking to meet demand) to support the players on the node allows me to slash expenditures dramatically, as opposed to a dedicated server which only allows for a specific set of resources at nearly twice the price.

Fortunately, there is one counter statement which helps handle those two problems: By combining the cheaper server, the dynamics of a VPS, and the ever-so-slightly raised prices, the service will be able to monetarily sustain itself with just
3 clients. This means that two of those dealbreaking catches will not come up for quite some time, judging by community interest.

Enough things - lets talk specs for a second.
The VPS will be purchased as a custom plan from http://myhosting.com . This company has numerous positive reviews both with regards to reliability and customer service. The most recent negative reviews are from two years ago when they did major upgrades to their infrastructure.
As Blockland servers primarily eat up RAM, I can have a server with the following specs that grows as necessary:
  • Disk Space - 40GB (Yes, this is sufficient for 10 average Blockland server installations. The majority of space is taken up by cache.db, which does not take up as much space on servers.
  • [0]RAM - Variable. 512MB added in for each client, up to a max of 8GB per node. Each server uses roughly 400-600 on average, but can grow to 1.67GB before crashing. I will have 12 clients per server. This is perfectly safe - in order for a server to actually utilize 1.67GB, it has to have at least 50 players and hundreds of thousands of bricks. The odds of a large number of servers on a node
simultaneously reaching 1.67GB are functionally impossible. I have run the numbers on this, and I am absolutely confident they are accurate.
  • 8 vCPUs. MyHosting does not specify what kind of processor is used. This should not make any tangible difference - odds are the processor is better than the one in your computer.
  • [0]OS: Ubuntu Server

The server management system at launch will consist of a very simple setup - it will utilize an extremely straightforward text-based interface over SSH (Secure Shell).
If you haven't heard of SSH before, that's fine - I'll explain in a second, but before you turn away take a look at how simple this is:

Look familiar? That's because it's just a simple console - it's integrated, almost exactly like running the server on your own computer. No nasty java interfaces that look like they were made in the 1900s, no web interfaces that must be ran in a resource-intensive browser - just you and your server.
If your server isn't running, you'll see this screen:

If it is running, you simply see your already-running server (as pictured above).

So why use SSH? There are a few primary reasons:
Firstly, it's a lot easier on me. Managing simply a Linux server doing Linux-y things is very straightforward if you have the right knowledge and experience. I have two years of experience doing just that.
Secondly, it's secure. As the connection is encrypted end to end, no one in the middle will be able to read or take over your server. Admittedly, this wasn't a very big problem before, but it is not a problem any longer.
Thirdly, SSH is completely cross-platform. There are SSH clients for Windows, Mac, Linux, Web browsers, Android, iOS, and probably even blackberries.
Finally, convenience. Yes, convenience. Option 4 on the menu screen is a fancy way of saying "speed up logins." I'll have a more detailed guide later, but imagine just double clicking an icon on your desktop and your server console just right there - no passwords, no logins, no keys on the keyboard, it's just there.

In an effort to get this service launched as soon as possible (to fill the gap in hosting solutions), I'm launching it with add-on management via FTP. However, as I understand this is a deal-breaker for many of you after RTB's web-based system, this is priority #1 for new features.
I also intend to have a direct-download-and-install system that ties into BAM's add-on repositories. Until BAM is released, however, I can use a local cache of the RTB add-ons for hyperfast and easy installation.
Also planned, but low priority, is a method for "offsite" logs. Really just outside of the Blockland folder. This means you can give eval to your admins, log it "offsite," and they can't touch the logs to clean up after their vile handiwork.

A lot of you will recall my previous post on this matter. As you can see, 27 people were interested in a simple, quick solution. I ask you now - now that you know more specific information, how many are still interested?

Here's the tentative schedule (in terms of order of events, not dates) (filled in dots are completed)
  • Poll community for interest - Interested.
  • Research feasibility of Linux-based hosting solution: Success on two fronts.
  • Put together specific information
  • Post this topic you are now reading.

If the community is still interested at this point, at least 4 people are ready to do this thing...
  • Finalize construction of Blockland server management system
  • Test everything - I can reliably test everything without actually buying the VPS due to owning numerous personal Linux-based systems.
  • Collect first months payments from first ~4 people
  • Purchase VPS
  • Upload/configure everything, and test for a few days with first ~4 clients - live beta if you will.
  • [0]Add some more people and test dynamic VPS resources (shouldn't take too long)
  • Open fully to public.
    The bottom line (hurr)
  • VPS-hosted Blockland server hosting service for $8 a month
  • [0]Cannot go
in the red.
  • Possibly ready in ~1-2 days (Figure almost entirely pulled out of my ass, really as soon as I can clear a day out of my schedule. That means Tuesday the 25th or Wednesday the 26th this week, as soon as I get at least 4 people lined up.)
  • [0]Bullet points are awesome.

tl;dr: Yes, it's a lot to read, but I'm laying out the specifics here. At least skim the whole thing over before commenting.

General Discussion / Poll regarding hosting services
« on: February 15, 2014, 05:46:39 PM »
With the shutdown of RTB upon us, and Kaphost long gone, the only presently running hosting service that I'm aware of is CBMHost, a free service that doesn't have enough room to meet demand.
I hear hammereditor is planning on starting his service up again, but needless to say his reputation leaves something to be desired among the community.

The question is this:
How great is the want for a hosting service? Would you be willing to pay to receive a barebones hosting service like Kaphhost (remote console, start/stop, ftp, ugly interface) if it meant it was able to be launched quickly - within the next few days, or would you greatly prefer a clean and polished hosting service like RTB, at the cost of having to wait a an indeterminate amount of time (it took RTB host what, 6 months for creation and testing? a year?)?

Since I know there are a number of hosts coming out of RTB, I also think it's safe to assume that you guys are going to want a solution now, not later. The question is, how many of you actually do want it right now?

Furthermore, would anyone be interested in a hosting service of the first kind, hosted by myself?

If you are interested in the quicker solution, PM me. Plans are still up in the air, and nothing may come of it, but I need to know who specifically is interested.

This is caused by the auth server being down.
I would have put this in the other topic, but no edit.
(The subject is important so the info is visible in the help topic listing)

Help / KNOWN ISSUE - THE AUTH SERVER IS DOWN

It's probably safe to say badspot knows about the issue and is working on it.

There is no need for more topics about this - 99.99% chance we can't help you.

Simple. If you are having this problem, post your console.log here.
1: open steam library
2: right click on blockland
3: properties
4: view local game content (far right tab, I think)
5: either post the console.log file here (attached via additional options (if you do the following:
1A: open additional options...
2B: click choose file
3C: drag the console.log from the finder window you got after step 4 into the box that opened from 2B
you should be able to just post the thing without any trouble))
6: or upload to mediafire, mega, filedropper, or some other not-bullstuff file sharing website.

if you are running OS X 10.9 and are not having this issue, please just drop a post here. no need to post your console.log.

additionally, upon clicking post the user should be presented with a javascript confirm(); box asking them if they
1: READ THE FAQ
2: Remembered to attach their console.log (if applicable)
clicking no would redirect to the faq IN A NEW TAB

90% of all help topics could be made significantly more efficient if people included their console.log in the op, instead of having to do that bullstuff back and forth where someone tells them to post it. i feel like i'm post whoring just by asking for information.

additionally, make this one bold too:

furthermore, if badspot is going to leave the majority of the technical support to the community (which he has) he owes it to us to make our job the slightest bit easier. it's just courtesy.

these naturally require modifications to the underlying php code - but they aren't hard modifications by far. a simple hardcoded IF statement for help forum related things will fix this right up.

I don't know what they would be, but are they there? What do they do? Can we use them?

Are they even keeping track of the numbers anymore?
Anyway, it's got

Magicka
Sanctum 2
Natural Selection 2

Pay more than the average (about $4 right now) and get

GMod
Serious Sam 3
Orcs must die 2

I just got gmod, yay.

This is super old, what, 1999? Anyway, I was perusing the Internets and came across this guys baddassery. He's the first one to ever win a million bucks on the show, and he doesn't even need any lifelines to do it. Well, not until the end anyway.

it's like 3 minutes long. the audience cheers loudly after Regis announces that John got the right answer, but I think the audio is normalized or something, so it shouldn't be too bad.

Just thought I'd share.
