I decided to go with the SHARK one that Satan recommended. It was a toss up between that one and the one pecon recommended, but in the end the SHARK won out primarily because I'm not a claw grip mouse holder. I conducted a critical 2 hour "study" to determine this, with methodology including playing counterstrike then checking my hand position whenever i remembered.

Anyway, thanks for the help, guys. Lots of great suggestions for various ranges and tastes.

I found this guide which walks you through it. All you need is a tiny screwdriver and a razor blade.

http://m.instructables.com/id/Ninja-Mouse-The-Silent-Click/

It boils down to taking the plastic off, opening the button assembly, and pushing the metal contacts so the clicky part moves less, meaning less click sound.

It makes the button have a lower tolerance for clicking though, so it's more sensitive.

Way loving quieter though.

Thanks. Looks like those shouldn't be impossible to remove and replace.

Those are some flashy mice for a two button device.
I'm struggling to find tamer options.
There's apparently no market for gamers who don't want a light show.

I use this, it's pretty good and only 15 bucks if you have amazon prime.
that one looks pretty good. Literally, I like how it looks.
It says it has 7 buttons, that's left, middle, right, the dpi changers, and the two on the side, right?

What kind of covering is on the bottom of the mouse? The slidey pad things? Could you take a picture of the bottom for me, please? Some of the reviews are describing extremely loud clicks, so I'd be modifying that. Aside from that (which was my main priority :c ) this mouse is covering all the bases.

problem is with sub $40 is that most of the mice use subpar sensors and if you're playing fps a "perfect sensor" would be useful
list of mice with perfect sensors (a little out of date and not everything is on here): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/tf2hwiJieQU6B5NaYrHM53A/htmlview
a... what? Like.... optical?

Guys, I know I'm not going to get a totally stupendous mouse for less than forty bucks. That is a firm upper limit though - I'm just looking for the best mouse in that range.

It says some LEDs can be closed. What does it mean by that? Can they be turned off?

How about click sound? How loud is it?

so pecon just suggested this mouse: http://www.amazon.com/CM-Storm-Xornet-Optical-Switches/dp/B00VJRO3XI/

that one looks really great - excellent price point, essentially every point i wanted, doesn't look stupid, except it's coming up short on buttons.
at 5 buttons, that's definitely under what i was hoping for.

if anyone has a mouse basically exactly like that one, except with more buttons, that's right what i'm looking for

Q: Will this mouse pad work with my mac?
A:
No. This mousepad is incompatible with Macs. The gripping material on the underside of the mat is 58c9x Wally spec from Indonesia. While this spec fits nicely into 64 bit Windows architecture, it will mix up the mainframe if you try to put this into an Apple Macintosh chipset.

i'm in the market for a mouse, you guys might be able to help

This is the one i currently use. The color scheme might turn you off though.
actually came across that one as well, and yes, the color scheme turned me off. looking at that link, it shows the bottom of the mouse and it uses those silly sliding sticky feet, so i couldn't access the insides without having to re glue those

i'm realizing now that isn't exactly a big problem

just found this: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2271118/difference-gaming-laser-mouse-optical.html
which links to: http://www.overclock.net/t/951894/the-truthful-mouse-guide
i'm presently using a wireless laser mouse. i think i'll be shooting for a wired optical one from here on out.

i'm in the market to pick up a new mouse because my current one is stuff - the little slidy feet things are sliding on the mouse, not my desk, the batteries like to inexplicably disconnect causing the mouse to fail (usually in the middle of a firefight, never outside of one), and the power switch has two modes - on, and "randomly goes off sometimes".
also, been playing some shooters and having more buttons on the mouse would be greatly useful

i've been looking at gaming mouses, and i came up with some ones that look okay, but they're really low price. good reviews, but i still want some other opinions, and maybe suggestions

i have a laundry list of things i would prefer in the mouse, sorted with priority at the top
  • needs to have quiet button presses - it doesn't have to come with this, i am completely capable of taking it apart and making the buttons quiet myself, but if i do, it must not damage the long term use of the mouse. this is part of why the feet are falling off my current one - i took them off to get at the screws, but now they aren't staying. i did expect that, but if i can avoid it in a future mouse somehow, that'd be great
  • 5+ buttons, but 8 or so is preferred. This is counting the 3 on every mouse (left, middle, right).
  • [0]i want to be able to pick it up in store to skip the shipping time. if the shipped version is going to be a dramatically better product, still list it
  • wireless is preferred for convenience, unless wired is leaps and bounds better. i've heard it's better, but i dunno nevermind that, i want a wired one
  • optical please
  • [0]no loving gaudy lights - i don't mind if they're on the bottom or under my hand, but i could
not stand it if it was lighting up the scroll wheel or something. i guess i could disconnect it while performing quieting surgery, so it's not a big deal.
  • muted color schemes - i don't need a ferrari, i'd prefer a spy car mouse
  • [0]i don't really care what the mouse looks like (you know, like those weird ones that look like transformers? i don't care if it looks like that or not)

you might note that the last 3 things could probably just be tied under "prefer utilitarian design," which is true. just wanted to drive it home that i don't want a flashy mouse.
i would prefer a mouse that doesn't look like it came from mars. don't let that stop you from suggesting them though. i'm sort of looking for volume here, not exactly accurate suggestions

most of these are mutable. if your suggestion misses most of these marks, but you absolutely love your mouse and would marry it if you could, feel free to suggest it

in my search i came up with this one and this one, and they both have good reviews, but there's two things off about each of them
the first one is apparently not programmable. what does this mean? can i not bind functions to these buttons ingame? i assume it just means you can't set the mouse buttons to emulate keyboard keys... but that's okay. i don't think i need that for compatibility, right?
the second is apparently 'small'. not sure how i feel about that, but i don't really claw grab my mouse, so i guess i prefer one that would fit my hand
both have no reviews about how quiet they are or how easy/safe it is to disassemble, and a quiet mouse is a major priority.
i'm tempted to just drop by a wal-mart and grab the first one i listed. it's literally $12, which is barely anything out of pocket, and it has some amazingly good reviews, but the 'lack of programming' is concerning me.

give me your mice suggestions

I like it a lot, and I don't mind it having a tracking item (after all, if it relied solely on visual information it could get lost if something got in between you and it), especially since the tracking item is also the remote control, which tells it what sort of camera angles/movements to take, and to come down.

I just don't like the fact that it has 20 minutes of battery power but takes 2 hours to recharge.
And from what I could understand since it's water-proof and all, you can't swap the batteries over.

It kind of sucks to take it out with you somewhere, like kayaking down a river, or surfing at the beach, or skiing, for it to only be able to catch 20 minutes of film, and then you actually have to go home to do more.
Whereas you could get a GoPro or similar, and catch hours of footage, albeit not from such spectacular views.
Keep in mind, you could have a portable charging device - a larger battery, for example, or a car charger.

Future versions will apparently also have removable batteries, so there's that too.
Doesn't seem that impressive to me since you have to wear a "tracking device", rather than it being able to track you without having to have something of that sort (we clearly aren't there yet at least at a consumer level).
this stuff is really hard to do... maybe the military?
It also lacks any obstacle avoidance which also sucks majorly considering you'd probably expect it by now (or I have over expectations for todays technology).
does it? i thought it had that.

It would be in interesting concept if they added flashlights to the game. I don't think it'd fit CSGO's original pacing, but what if they made it so you could pay extra money (ingame, not like skins) to attach a flashlight to your weapons, sortof like buying armor, and that flashlight can be used to see as it's rather dark? That could bring upon the question of, how will you use this tactically if enemies can see you? What if one person is the designated 'flashlight guy' and the rest use that light to play? Valve could cash in and make it so you could possibly purchase different flashlight skins or something. Then again, this wont be long term, once the operation ends flashlights'll probably go out of bidnuss.
Different colour lights.
