Off Topic / Re: The Chronology of the Blockland Forums
« on: April 08, 2020, 11:39:55 AM »
Been viewing this thread for the past couple days or so and god it is hard to believe I've been registered here for about a decade now. I'm not quite sure why I keep returning- it's almost like an itch that I need to scratch. I think it's because every time I do visit something big changes for the worst, and in the back of my mind, I think that one visit might be my last before this place is gone forever.

Going back into those old threads is such a blast back in time. Seeing old names that were once regulars but have now moved on makes me wonder where they are right now, what they're doing nowadays, and if they ever still think about Blockland sometimes. Looking at it, it looks like some log in 4 to 6 years after their last post probably for the same reasons I drop by sometimes.

I registered when I was only 11 years old. Definitely too young to have been using a public forum at the time so I'm surprised I only got banned once. Being here definitely shaped my youth and definitely whipped me quicker into maturity compared to my peers at the time.

It will be interesting to see how Brickadia will carry on some of the community seeing how many have migrated over. I considered making and prototyped my own Blockland clone in OpenGL but looking at all these threads and what Badspot had to put up for 15 years; I decided to drop the project. I say good luck to the Brickadia team because they will have to deal with the same issues in the future, no matter how much they try to mitigate it. If I had to take the position of Badspot for those 15 years I would have just sold the game to some big company and let them deal with the moderation while I bathed in money.

I think my biggest regret though will always be not having a bigger impact on the game or community. I wish I contributed more to builds and developing game content while making a name for myself but oh well.

If you're one of the older users from 2005 to around 2013 and you're reading this: thanks for the memories. :)

Can't remember when I got Blockland. Must've been 07 or 08.

Anyway, just a no name from Sept 2009 reporting in

because it's just a notch above more credible and entertaining than someone using an old lego forum as their news blog

from an outsider looking in honestly Brickadia just looks like a graphically polished Blockland just with terrains and interiors. Not to mention the complete lack of modding support that should've been actively addressed during early development and worked up from there.

The idea is neat and the demo footage from what i've seen is pretty impressive, but when and if the game is released will likely just be a small clique of the few players that couldn't let Blockland go and the game will fizzle out from there

erm i don't think this is a yes or no question lol
I mean it is an OR question and the venue can only be either outside or inside. So the answer is obviously 'yes'

I remember him just because my POS software was the only "competition" to Afterblock.

edit: Oh hey, I'm actually mentioned too.

"It was announced prior to Platnium Blockland, which IcyGamma always felt stole
AfterBlock's concepts. Though Tyler66, the developer of Platnium, denied this."

I still stand by that, I had no idea about the existence of AfterBlock when I was working on PBL. It all started when I had the idea make a simple "Blockland Manager" which did simple functions like automatically find the Blockland directory and open folders.

Looking back on it, both were equally terrible for one being worked on a novice Visual Basic programmer and the other being made with the GameMaker library, something which seems a rather odd platform to be developing your application on.

Overall I don't think anyone asked for either AfterBlock or PBL and both were just about useless and completely unnecessary in concept.

Very impressive, well done.

I think one of the biggest issues Blockland has and partially the reason of its decline was its poor play in market competition.

Blockland's hayday I'd say was around 2007 to 2011 give or take, which Blockland had very little market competition when it came to sandbox games. Its only major competitor was Roblox, which in comparison was a behemoth which nonetheless Blockland performed quite well against. But now there are plenty more sandbox games people can choose from, many of which might be capable of doing everything that Blockland can do, but the stuff they can do are done much better than Blockland does. Because of that the game has to compete with the likes of Minecraft, Rust, ARK, etc.

Call it apples and oranges as much as you'd like- but it still doesn't change that they're all sandbox games that Blockland has ultimately lost to.

I think one place that Blockland fell in was how it was played. Blockland, in its most basic state is more like a tool than a game. I think a good way to pull in more players is to make Blockland function more like a game rather than a tool. It's not too often do you see large streamers or Youtubers building a house for 5 hours unless said process involves resource collection or fighting off players and/or monsters that want them and their house/base destroyed.

Just food for thought.

Got the game around the time version 8 was still a thing. Sad to see most people I remember left.

Still gotta see if I can dig up my old laptop hard drive gathering dust in a box in the corner of my bedroom. It should still have the skybox on it.
