How common is metal? From what I've gathered from the wiki/ingame you need the prospecting skill to fine places to build mineholes. How common are minehole spots?

You need Rustroot to find Mine Holes.
To find Rustroot, your Perception X Exploration has to equal 500+ to start seeing it.
Then turn it into Rustroot extract and boom, you're off hunting for a mine.
