instead of ammo you could also just have some sort of energy...pellet or something that you can put into your guns and after a (long) while they run out and you have to recharge them

and as a result you wouldn't have to use this horrifying system
i thought starbound was already mediocre to play but holy stuff lol, now i'm really glad that mods exist

Maybe it could work like this: Guns will drain from energy pellets first, but once those run out, they begin to drain character energy.
