Only sometimes, depending on the job.
Basic housework (Cleaning) and jobs they give me are just because I'm family. Anything above that they'll pay me a bit. For example, cutting all the plants in my backyard. Each plant has a big stock that you need to cut with hedge clippers. My mom made me do 50 (because I'm family). Then every 50 after that was $5. I cut 200 of them in an hour (Which she wasn't expecting it to be done that fast), but she gave me the $15 anyway. On a side note, my mom is generally more willing to pay me for yard work as I am allergic to a lot of the pants around me. Like last night, when I was bagging all the stocks to be thrown away, my forearms rubbed along the plants quite a bit. When I had gotten back inside, my arms started to REALLY break out and itch like crazy. So it's a win/lose.

Although, I have had the privlegde to work around the house for my parents, they are are willing to pay me for some of that work. Last night I cut down a punch of these plants growing along our back yard and I made $15 for about an hours worth of work.

I'd love to see a GC become portable, as it has the LoZ collector's edition game with OOT and MM on it. And the 3DS is just going to be a handheld N64 (Not that there is anything wrong with it).
@OP: If you need any help at all, there is this great website called Acidmods that specializes in modding consumer electronics. They are super helpful and the community is a ton more friendly than this one.
Oh, and chances are, someone on there has probably attempted something like what you want to do.
And one last thing, there is a portable Xbox360, so don't let anyone tell you can't do it to last gen systems.
