Suggestions & Requests / Re: [New Forum Section] Build Techniques
« on: February 12, 2012, 03:23:04 AM »
This encourages unoriginality

Most people come up with techniques on their own, and learn things on their own.

I'm not really sure how to word what my exact thoughts are, but with actual Legos, there are entire sites devoted to just building techniques. And it's not an entirely new idea to copy other people's techniques. Blockheads have been doing it for ages by simply joining someone's server, observing different elements of the build, and then replicating them in their own builds. The difference is that we'll have all these techniques in one easy-to-access area. And yes, the same technique for a nice window might be used over and over again, but the result will be that we have nicer-looking builds overall.

Anyway, we've reached 30 yes's to only 4 no's, so I'll shoot Badspot a PM.

Detroit, MI

I used to live an hour away from Detroit, now I live in OKC, OK.

Build. Try to develop a love of building as fast as possible as that is the main focus of the game. Look in the Gallery section to get ideas and what not, but build as much as possible.

Only problem is that it will be more noticeable now.

I'm pretty sure someone mentioned that this update should lessen the effects.

I assume this will still happen?

Judging by the screenshots so far, you can see that happening a little bit.

This isn't kindergarten. And there's a smart reason why people disagree with this update.

Your kindergarten remark makes no sense. And what is this reason?

This doesn't promote building what so ever.  You can argue that it forces people to build, yes, but that's individual insentive, NOT something physically produced from the game.

Both examples are TINY in comparison to what I'm referring to.  An ENTIRE environment you can explore without end -- can you replicate this with bricks?  No, you cannot.

Don't fix something that isn't broken.

You keep posting that "Don't fix something that isn't broken" phrase. Applying that here is the same logic as having a car with a crank start instead of an automatic ignition.

Anyway, you bring up the point of an "ENTIRE environment you can explore without end". Who actually does that? Who sits and walks for minutes on end into the reoccurring landscape? Hardly anyone. In fact, it's such a small minority that it should not even be relevant to this argument. Most servers that use terrain and such are based around a particular area from which few people go outside of. Infinite terrain isn't needed and a terrain generator could cover the rest.

Take a look at the server list. As of right now, there are 106 servers up. Out of these 106, only 34 are non-slate maps. That means that 68% of servers could care less about terrain and/or interiors. Out of those remaining 34, about only 14 really use terrain (as opposed to interiors ie Bedroom). That means that only 13% truly care about terrain. Here's where I'm going to make some assumptions. Most servers that use a terrain map generally have a focal point from which a good 90% of everything in the server surrounds. The radius from this point is relativity small (most don't even reach repeat terrain), meaning that "ever-expanding terrain" isn't even useful for them (meaning that it wouldn't be "impossible" to create the terrain with bricks). We are now left with a very small selection of servers who truly use this system of terrain. These servers are hardly populated and generally have no real use of this infinite terrain.

The majority of Blockland wants this update and Badspot is going to release it despite how much the minority protests. If you're truly looking for a game with "infinite" places to explore, please go play minecraft. It does that task so much better than Blockland ever has.

I don't think 100 purple will vote.

Contact them anyway

20 isn't enough. If it hits 30, I will.

If it's a playertype it's more like you need an event or a minigame to set to it.
And it customizes to what the player's normal avatar is (if the player has a blue shirt the playertype gets a blue shirt).

It doesn't work like that.

The only way we can have this is if Badspot makes it default (And I'm almost positive that it isn't infringing on rights), or if someone makes a playertype. The playertype, however, would not be able to be customized.

I believe that it would look weird in Blockland if the bricks we wanted to be grass or dirt or something would be very shiny from some light source. Would there be anyway to give bricks an option to have that sort of shininess or will it always look weird, no matter what?

You can disable it if you like, it's client-sided.

There's a difference between forcing creativity and promoting a redundant, insufficient use of bricks.  Brick terrain isn't user friendly (depending on the size, it'll almost definitely create some sort of lag -- have you ever walked on brick terrain? Err, jumped from block to block in it?), looks absolutely hideous, and will almost definitely exceed a specific brickcount.  This is, in no way, an effective way of changing the game.  It's a step backward, not a step forward.  I've yet to hear many solid arguments that actually state the benefit of losing terrain/interiors.. or, rather, ones that aren't easily contradicted by the above statements.

Seeing as Blockland is a game about building, any update that has the ability to promote that I would consider a step forward. Removing terrain/interiors can give rise to higher brick counts which promotes building, meaning it is a step forward.

Now, with this in mind, I'll go back through your post:

There's a difference between forcing creativity and promoting a redundant, insufficient use of bricks.
It really depends on the user, but seeing as most of the community is unable to build a simple house effectively, I'll side with you on this one.

Brick terrain isn't user friendly (depending on the size, it'll almost definitely create some sort of lag -- have you ever walked on brick terrain?
Debatable.

Err, jumped from block to block in it?, looks absolutely hideous, and will almost definitely exceed a specific brickcount.
Example 2. Also, there aren't a whole lot of servers that having large areas for the players to explore, most are limited to a small space.

This is, in no way, an effective way of changing the game.  It's a step backward, not a step forward.  I've yet to hear many solid arguments that actually state the benefit of losing terrain/interiors.. or, rather, ones that aren't easily contradicted by the above statements.
I've addressed the step forward argument.

I feel like many people don't seem to understand that after this update, Blockland will need to be RELEARNED. We won't be able to play the game the same way as we have before. If you don't like it, nobody is forcing you to stay here.

They were probably removed for a reason.

I believe the reason we don't have them now is not an issue of legality, but because Badspot just preferred them without arms.

I added a poll. If 100 people say yes, I'll message Badspot or another admin to show that there is quite a bit of support for this suggestion.

No.  Making the game look better is one thing, but because of legality, Lego would not be happy and Blockland might be lost.  WAY too big of a risk.

I am content with the current features.
