Add-Ons / Re: Blockland Glass 4.1
« on: December 21, 2017, 11:32:12 AM »
We included a message about compatibility issues because there are, indeed, compatibility issues. We’ve gone out of our way to very carefully ensure Glass functions well with RTB since there are several variants still around that have patches allowing it to still work.

oRBs’ approach is incredibly invasive and really not a good way to go about it. Instead of offering compatibility, all your add-ons are overwritten and their code changed? That’s not the right way to implement backwards compatibility and isn’t good for either developers or users.

Only a small percentage of users actually have oRBs (there’s maybe 5 online at any given time?) and we deemed it no longer worth our time to provide support that nearly mirrors RTB for an inferior product that’s both broken and very rarely utilized.

You get the oRBs compatibility message every time an unsupported method is called that’s going to cause some sort of conflict. Our preference manager doesn’t sync up with oRBs’ preferences, so every time a pref is registered through oRBs you receive that message. Making the message only appear once is ineffective for debugging or trying to figure out why your pref is only showing up in one or the other manager but not both.

There’s nothing about pettiness or personal preference here. I don’t lose sleep over “competition”. oRBs and Glass just don’t play well together and it’s not a significant enough issue for us to invest a lot of time in to addressing.

Only add-ons that have a server.cs file are displayed as the page was (originally) intended to be used to enable/disable add-ons, and you can't do that with client add-ons.

Scheduled Maintenance
Server maintenance tonight starting at 11pm EST. Should only last 10-15 minutes max. Glass Live, the website, the mod manager, and the Glass Hosting panel will be unavailable during this time.

All I did was manually disconnect using the disconnect button

Issue with the 4.2 alpha where the disconnect method on the TCPObject was being overwritten. Fixed today.

That means that they keep re-adding you. After you've declined, they're free to send you a new request.

I would recommend blocking them.

Hey, is it normal that i get disconnected from the chat after nobody talks for a while?
It's an issue we're aware of and there's a potential fix included in 4.2

Could Jincux or someone else knowledgeable with this project write out a summary of the dev features available through glass? Things like prefs, server loading screens, etc. could all use a brief explanation on how to use them in a place we can find it, like the glass website or the OP of this topic. Even in the description file would suffice.
I'll try to put something together when I get a chance. Some stuff is in the manual, but not all, like preferences and notifcations.

running glass for the first time on a clean install of blockland gives console errors and downloads a faulty version of support_updater
What console errors? It doesn't download Support_Updater, it creates a fake file for it which will give an error if you try to open it. Support_Updater is included inside of Glass, the fake file needs to be created so that it can still receive updates.

I've been extremely overwhelmed with school and a new job so far this semester, which has put a big halt on the progress of Glass. During my free time, I'm typically exhausted and have little to no motivation to do anything other than vegetate and disengage from working.

The next update is still nearly finished, it was only a week or so away from release when school started back up. It's still on the way and I'll put in time when I have some available.

Development Update

The Creators Update is still underway, despite a slight slowdown recently. I've been busy with the beginning of a new semester and a new job, so I'm making sure that the time I have for Glass is quality time so that everything is given the attention it needs and doesn't come out rushed. I've implemented a logging system for Glass as well as a system that archives previous console.log files. I'll need to implement some settings with how many of these are kept as it's indefinite right now, but the functionality is there.

I have started implementing add-on groups, allowing users to create groups that can be enabled/disabled all together. For the time being, this is a purely client-sided feature meaning you won't see groupings on the mod manager, but that may come about in another update.

The time I have had recently has been divided between Glass Hosting and Glass. With the DDoS issues, I've been looking in to a new host, but there's been a few barriers and my limited time-frame hasn't been helped. I'm hoping to get the creators update out soon so that we can move forward with our plans for Glass 5.

I'll take a look and see if we can include it in the next update. Would need to do a big review to ensure that there's no back-door way to access the "private" add-ons. Trying to get 4.2 out soon, just bogged down with DDoS issues on Glass Hosting and the beginning of the semester.

The 10Gbps protection was taken down yesterday and resulted in Vultr null-routing the server until 4 hours after the attack ended. My reasoning for east coast as opposed to Texas is being inclusive to EU players, as we do have a good number of them. I'll look in to some though and see how viable it is.

The service doesn't have the overhead to have multiple locations. Right now at max there's one server that's half-filed. Introducing multiple locations allows for multiple servers to be net losing money and I don't have the income to fund that. DDoS protection is fixed cost despite the size of the server, so I can't chose smaller servers in other locations without jacking up the price per client. It's gotten to the point where I can afford that if we were offering a single tier, but if we're doing multi-tier then there's no spare income left to cover those.

This really is operating at bare-minimum income. If people want those various locations, I'm happy to set it up for them, but that's an increased cost.

Linode is our current provider. Vultr provides optional 10Gbps DDoS protection. If we are to select Vultr, we would migrate away from Linode entirely, with economy and premium having the same network but different resources and features. The provider in Canada claims unlimited DDoS protection, whatever that means. I can offer the Canada location for $12/mo. Here's the update table:

Class  Monthly PriceCPUMemoryStorageProtectionPremium Features
Economy$7/mo1/2 vCPU1 GB RAM10GB SSDNoneNo
Premium CA$12/mo1 vCPU (29% faster!)2 GB RAM15GB HDDUnlimitedYes
Premium NY$15/mo1 vCPU2 GB RAM15GB SSD10GbpsYes
Event$20/mo1 vCPU (45% faster!)4 GB RAM65GB SSD500GbpsYes

Now, it gets complicated adding more and more providers. I don't believe we will end up having all of the options above. I am comfortable with two providers at max for automation, with a third being manually run (event servers). It boils down to whether to offer premium in NY or CA. Both have their benefits and their weaknesses. Canada offers better performance, protection, and price while New York delivers better latency and disk speed. I'm not sure what those who would want a premium server are more interested in, so please let me know and I'll input that in to my decision.

Crown's server is currently on Premium NY, but he is trying Premium CA after the next crash.

I'll see if we can ship that with 4.2, we've also thought about having a loading screen cycle so that it updates every 5-10 seconds. Perhaps changing the loading bar position or color too.

72
Looking like I would need to charge $20-25/mo for 500Gbps ddos protection and more RAM than Blockland could ever deplete. The API for this option isn't friendly so I would likely need to manually set these up. I would like to find something more affordable (and with a better API) than that but if there's interest I can pursue it. If not, I'll still keep that option open for event hosting as it has better performance all around and I can sponsor that for short amounts of time.

Alternatively, I can offer premium servers with limited DDoS protection and have three grades of servers

Essentially looking at the following lineup:

Class  Monthly PriceCPUMemoryStorageProtectionPremium Features
Economy$7/mo1/2 vCPU1 GB RAM10GB SSDNoneNo
Premium$15/mo1 vCPU2 GB RAM15GB SSD10GbpsYes
Event$20-25/mo1 vCPU (45% faster!)4 GB RAM65GB SSD500GbpsYes

I'm just not sure how popular the upper end options would be and what people consider reasonable prices. I don't want to invest time to offer features and services that won't be utilized.

edit: can also offer cheaper high ddos protection but from east-coast Canada. All of the above are from New York/New Jersey.

73
The attackers upped their DDoS (actually looks like we got hit with 3 at once) and were able to take down the "DDoS protected" server. I don't want to offer something that doesn't work, so I'm looking up other hosts that offer better protection. Unfortunately, many of the well protected services offer a really weird CPU/RAM ratio. Having enough of one would mean having way too much of the other and that jacks up the price. Some good providers also have really obscure locations, which impacts ping.

That's Glass. oRBs is bad and you shouldn't be using it.

clarification: it's a compatibility error from the preferences system since we dropped compatibility with oRBs.

Suggestions & Requests / Re: Bot-checking tool for ddos protection

in addition it doesnt use blockland for anything other than finding target ip's. they can ddos you even if you arent hosting unless you close all ports except the one you host on

And if you closed them through software instead of decent DDoS resistant hardware, they can still shut you down too
