Games / Re: Tips for not sucking at CoD: Black Ops?
« on: March 25, 2011, 11:36:44 AM »
I think the best tip for any FPS is to just play more to get better. The equipment you use is really personal preference. I'm not sure if Black Ops has equipment that is clearly better, but even so it still might not matter. As an example, I run around in BFBC2 with just a pistol most of the time and I do fine.

Some tactics (I use in Battlefield games):
I try to not fire at everyone I see, so I can evaluate the situation and figure out if giving my position away is worth it or if I should move around to intercept my target another way. Another thing is I use grenades to "smoke" people out. If I know someones at the side of one wall, for example, I will throw a grenade on that side and force them to run around the other side where I'll be waiting to shoot them. If they don't notice the grenade they simply blow up.

Games / Re: Rift™ - The new WoW?
« on: March 22, 2011, 05:46:48 PM »
Only thing unique in WoW is the cross-server PVP and dungeons.

Only thing unique in rift is the dynamic rift/invasion/conquest system. And maybe the class system depends on how you look at it.

But skele has conveniently changed his argument from "It's a wow clone" to "all MMOs are generic."
Actually I'm pretty sure I've been referring to MMOs in general for the entire argument. My initial posts in this topic were targeted toward the title of the topic. This past argument all sparked from me pointing out that your hospital/hotel brown townogy wasn't the same as rky's brick brown townogy. The only other time I mentioned WoW was either stating a personal opinion or using it as an example.

I'll let you believe what you want, though.

Again, I'm not talking specifically about Rift. I also don't believe I said WoW is unique, only merely use it in examples because many games seem to try and copy it specifically given that it has the largest following.

Anyways, I'm going to conclude my point simply by saying that developers should be looking to create features in the hopes that they become a new standard. When new standards are achieved, the core functionality of something is permanently improved and therefore can further be expanded upon. If no one can make changes that stick the core functionality will always remain the same. Going back to the car brown townogy, ten or so years ago it was a premium feature to have security and power locks, now it's pretty much standard.

All MMOs I have ever seen built upon the foundation, that is how it works. Rift added Rifts/invasions/conquests and that is their ace up the sleeve. If you want them to completely rebuild the foundation that makes no sense. The foundation is what makes something what it is. Here is a properly uses brown townogy to show you stupid your brown townogy is:

All cars have the same foundation, they have wheels and a place for you to sit in them, they have a steering wheel, they have pedals to go and stop, and they have brakes. Most people would argue that all cars are basically the same except in appearance, but some cars cost a lot more, usually because of minor details like more power, more electronics, or more luxuries. No one would argue that we should completely redo the basics of cars and get rid of the wheels and the cab and the pedals, because they are necessary in order to be considered cars.
This was never about remaking the foundation. Holy forget. It was about building upon it and improving it. Not aways doing the same loving thing over and over again. You're brown townogy about cars only reinforces this. Cars keep getting better and better. They have additional features that aren't just flashy but have very specific functions for the sake of convenience. At it's core it's still a motorized vehicle, yes, but a car now and a car from 50 years ago is no where near the same in overall functionality. MMOs from 10 years ago are still similar to MMOs being produced now.

Do you really think everyone making new games aren't trying to be original?
Yes, because a lot of developers only care about the money. Think about it. World of Warcraft pulls in over 2 billion a year in profits, it's clearly doing something right, is it not? So, developers make a game similar enough to allow people to ease into it better, and then offer certain flashy features to draw the players in, hoping that the player stays.

Well I don't have any facts or evidence to prove Rift is a Wow clone, so look at it like this:

MMORPGs are brick walls, and no matter what a brick wall looks like, it is still a brick wall. So MMORPGs are brick walls and they all look different but they are still MMORPGs. Wait that goes against my argument, okay MMORPGS are all brick walls, and all brick walls do the same thing(well I guess they don't do anything they are just brick walls), so all MMORPGs are the same even if they are different. You understand why Rift is a WoW clone now?

A brick wall can function as a barrier, as a visual piece, as an obstacle in an obstacle course, as a monument to an event. By your logic that a brick wall always function as a brick wall, a shelter always functions as a shelter, like a hospital and a hotel. The brown townogy is handicapped can you just grasp that? Also to quote that link you didn't want to read:

... you could use that brown townogy for a lot of things because it's an brown townogy for a concept. He's literally saying that developers need to stop making the same basic thing without expanding upon it and making it something unique.

So FPS games don't build on a foundation?
We aren't talking about FPS games? You could use the same brown townogy for FPS games, but it was used specifically for MMORPGs. In fact, you could use that brown townogy for a lot of things because it's an brown townogy for a concept. He's literally saying that developers need to stop making the same basic thing without expanding upon it and making it something unique.

what kind of wall is a fps?
Again, this is pertaining to MMORPGs specifically. The more you abstract it the less meaning it's going to have.

His brown townogy is easy to grasp, but it isn't a valid argument.

http://skeptico.blogs.com/skeptico/2007/07/argument-by-ana.html
Based on your previous statements regarding it, it's not that easy to grasp (i.e. comparing your hotel and hospital brown townogy to rky's brick wall brown townogy).

Literally look at it this way:

You have a foundation (the MMORPG "recipe" if you will, or the brickwall).

You build on that foundation to make it something new/different (for the brick wall, you build a hospital or hotel, using the elements of your previous incorrect brown townogy comparison).

If the foundation is the only real part of the structure, then all the structures are pretty much the same, a foundation. Doesn't matter what shape or colour or material that foundation is, it's still the foundation.

It may not be perfect, but it works for it's intended purpose.

It's function. A brick wall always functions as a brick wall, but a hospital and hotel have very specific functions.
