Off Topic / WORST. DAY. EVER.
« on: July 22, 2010, 05:08:31 PM »
Alright, so:

Yesterday, I decided to get a new case for my PC (as the one I had was giant and I wanted to make it more compact), so as I'm taking it apart, I discover something lying on the floor: a capacitor. The only place it could've come from is the motherboard. Still, I keep going, in hopes that I'm still able to get it to work without a capacitor. As I'm putting the PSU in, I accidentally slip and cause the PSU to fall...right into my laptop's screen, cracking it. So, after I finish up, I plug my recased PC in, expecting the worst...it works!

It worked all of last night with no signs of anything breaking, until this morning. I go to get on my PC, hit the power button and see the hard drive light flash, then nothing. I look inside and see that the green light on the motherboard is still lit, and then I try to turn it on again. Nothing. I remove all power (power cable, CMOS battery, etc) and put the motherboard into "recovery mode", turn it on, again, the fans barely spin and the hard drive light comes on, then nothing.

So now, I basically have a laptop with a cracked screen and a broken desktop PC, and I'm stuck using my Eee PC.

DO NOT UPGRADE THE PROCESSOR.

I've upgraded the processor in my old Dell (Optiplex 320), it had a Socket 775 Intel Pentium 4 (3.0 GHz), when I bought a Core 2 Duo, the BIOS freaked out and didn't know what to do, and bricked the entire machine.

It wasn't just my PC either, it happened in my Mom's PC (same one as mine, but it worked afterwards).

You'll need a new motherboard if you want a new processor/CPU.

Bump, an update.

I guess I just barely skimmed by getting the actual virus, seeing as how Avast can't pick anything up now, and nothing suspicious is running.

But still, in the log, the attempted infection came from Destructoid, so stay away from there.

Thank you captain Miga for protecting the internet once again.

Why yes, I think I found a new STEAM name for when I fix my PC.

I'll probably just reformat. Again. Not like I'll lose anything, everything's on my 1.5 TB HDD. :cookieMonster:

If I didn't have a laptop dedicated to running Ubuntu, I'd be without a PC right about now.

I just got a loving virus (for the first time in years). Now, I'm on my Linux laptop freaking out quite a bit over what happened.

It started when I was looking up some article (I don't remember what it was, but that's besides the point). I went to Destructoid (which is usually a good website), Avast made the "Warning" sound, then crashed, saying "Avast has stopped working", my PC started slowing down, and I quickly hit the "reset" button on my PC and shut it down.

I reported the site as malicious, and I recommend not going to there, even if you have any form of virus protection (Firefox + Adblock, NoScript; Avast; it got past all of this stuff. Whatever "it" may be, I don't know yet.)

So an old memory I have of using a microphone as a speaker was true...

Interesting.

The pre-owned 360 is probably gonna break sometime soon. You should always get 360's new, because of how fast they break.

My laptop that I'm getting in September. (I want it now, dammit!)

A girlfriend....

Don't worry, there's always TeslaCoil...oh wait.

You won't be able to get past the main menu in Fallout 3 because of your Intel graphics. Even if it did work, it would run terribly due to not only a bad graphics chip, but a terrible processor (Intel Celeron).

Time to get a new PC.
