I would have attatched this to my previous post, but I didn't want to edit it to make it seem overwhelming:
If I was doing the same I could be posting links to stories that one of the hostage keepers was a journalist for Al Jazeera,
You could, but even CNN would say you need a bit more evidence.
https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/10/middleeast/israel-gaza-hostages-journalist-hamas-intl-hnk/index.html

I'll get back to TLDRing the controversy list for those interested after I finish making dinner.
I would like to note a clarification to my last post however, that mistakenly made it seem like I was implying Egypt was a monarchy before the 2011/2012 revolution and election. Mubarak, the president prior to the revolution, was not democratically elected, but instead appointed after his service in the military.
I don't want to edit the post though so I will just have to leave the clarification here.

Ok. I have updated the post to specify that we are not certain how many of the 274 killed in this specific attack were civillians (although I am sure we can both agree that the 64 children killed were unlikely to be Hamas agents)

Unfortunately it is difficult indeed to get exact numbers when Israel says only 100 Palestinians were killed. (that is a rather high number, still when rescuing only 4 people and killing 3 people that were supposed to be rescued but ok.) Of those Israel itself has only confirmed that 17 of them were militant combatants. That is still at least 83 civilians. (247 if we are going by the health ministry that has to deal with the influx of injuries after every one of the assaults)

But here are some more non al-jazeera sources:

Yes, Al-Jazeera is the primary news agency that has up-to-date reporting of the events in Gaza, and thus is going to be the most easily cited when these events occur instead of waiting two days for CNN or APNews to print the same stories.

I'm also taking a brief look through that list of controversies, some of it does seem troubling. Some of it, not so much. I will leave a tldr for those who don't want to read that whole link.

In Algeria, the government shut off residents power to prevent them from seeing Al-Jazeera's coverage of Algerian military's abuse of power. Not so troubling.
In Australia they were criticized for a documentary revealing a far-right politician's connections to the US's gun lobbyists. Not so troubling.
In Bangladesh, they are accused of downplaying atrocities committed by Pakistani militia groups, while criticizing Bangladesh's democratic government. Yeah, that's troubling.
In Bahrain, they were banned for being too pro-Israeli. Not so much troubling as confusing.
In Egypt, they were condemned for their bias against Egyptian royal government and support of the Muslim Brotherhood organisation,
(An organization originally founded to combat Britian's occupation in Egypt and promote Islamist teachings. It supported Egypt's transition into a democracy, and during the Arab Spring movement in 2012 achieved the first democratically elected president in Egypt, who was later ousted for failing to curtail the Brotherhood's pro-islamic extremism after their election. It's a very complicated subject and worthy of an entirely different thread). That is to say, for this point, It's definitely complicated. And I can agree this could troubling.

I unfortunately have to run to the store, but I can continue to summarize this list later. It should suffice to say for now, that yes, this news source, like many others, are biased around what their audience is concerned about. That is why, when pressed for more sources, I don't stick to just one. When devising a brief summary of events, as I have been doing, however, (in a thread that practically no one reads anyways) there is little benefit for me to be so extensive.

And again I update my posts through edits to avoid being spammy, but if you prefer i can just double post.

Most recently, Israel has now bombed a UN Refugee school where children were sheltering, killing over 40 civilians, most of them women and children.

Update 2024,06,08:

Recent attack on Nuseirat refugee camp leads to 274 Palestinians dead in single assault, 700 injured

Despite the continued attrocities, Hamas forces are still willing to sign ceasefire deal

Israel continues to refuse to accept ceasefire deals despite its own citizens holding daily protests because they just want their loved ones home. This recent group of protestors were not only ignored but arrested by their own police for advocating peace.

If this were about returning the hostages, Israel would have accepted any of the ceasefire deals that the US or Egypt have proposed. This clearly is not their goal as the continue to indiscriminately bomb the areas that these hostages are being held, instead of accepting the peace offer and the return of their hostages.

I really feel like this should have deserved a seperate post instead of just an edit but I don't want to get too spammy here.

Oh my god, so that attack that killed 274* Palestinians in 10 minutes I just wrote about?
I just learned that US and Israeli Forces hid inside an aid truck to get close to the refugee camp before opening fire on Palestinians.
Disguising yourself as a medic/aid worker in order to kill people, innocent civilians no less, is such a blatant war crime. Whatever happened to Biden's red loving line?

*Updated death toll from 210 to 274 for those who succumbed to their injuries since yesterday (64 of them were children)

Oh and so to those who were saying this killing of 274 Palestinians was justified because the IOF and US forces rescued 4 captives?
What about the 3 other captives that were killed by in discriminant fire during the attack on the refugee camp?

This isn't the first time that Israel has killed the hostages it is supposedly trying to rescue. Back in December, IOF forces shot and killed three hostages that were holding a white flag as they approached their supposed rescuers:

is this what you call a quarter-life crCIA?
My quarterlife crCIA involved going back to school to study robotics and poli-sci and accidentally becoming a theatre major instead

cool story bro, or brette, or brey/brem

That is more precise, yes, but there are also a great deal of Christian Zionists here in the US who are applauding this genocide and claiming it as God's Will. (And some more extreme fanatics who believe that Jesus can't return unless Israel is allowed to complete these atrocities. I'm too tired to look up exact references on what the groups call themselves but something about Revelations or whatever.)

Anyways, I haven't been keeping as thorough a log of updates of the daily horrors the innocent civilians of Gaza face, but last night there was an utterly condemnable act wherein Israel dropped over 60 bombs onto a tent encampment in Gaza, an area known as Block 2371, host of a United Nations Relief Support Tent, where just four days ago, the IOF had told civilians they should evacuate to because it would be a designated safe area.

It should be noted that Biden has said several times that there were "Red Lines" that Israel shouldn't cross if it didn't want the US to pull funding. Every single one of those lines have been crossed, and this newest horrific act has still not been enough to convince Biden that enough civilians have been needlessly slaughtered.

53
Ok, but that could have been achieved by just saying "evil scum" or even inserting more specific language regarding the political ideologies at play here.

Imagine if this thread were also denouncing the active genocide also occurring in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and you said the same thing but substituted "Jew" for "Black". You might have intended to specifically imply the forces fighting on behalf of Chinese and Western mining investment groups, but that is not at all what comes across from the specific words you chose to use.

54
So I know I should know better than to expect even an ounce of nuance out of anyone here but let me be more specific:

Yes, The State of Israel is a tribal apartheid settler colony. Good job acknowledging that.

However,
evil jew scum
is an inherently anti-semitic statement.
The moment you bring religion and ethnicity into the criticism, you open the floodgates for those dumbasses who equate anti-zionism with anti-semitism.

There is a large portion of Jewish folks around the world, including in Israel, who oppose the atrocities being committed.
It is hard to believe that you are so obtuse as to not see the difference between legitimate criticism and what you said.

Yup, you've convinced me that it is entirely impossible for anyone to change their worldview under any circumstance.

56
Yeah, that's not what this thread is about, and you can kindly forget off.
We are criticizing a pair of despotic governments and the war crimes they are complicit in.
You can do that without being a tribal stuffthead.  :cookieMonster:

Yeah, I still see that stupid meme about "wow railroads in the us are spaced they way they are cause of roman chariots" completely ignoring there were like 7 different competing railroad gauges, but every few months I see someone else post "wow did you know railroads..."

ahem.
Oh fun! See, I only remember reading a couple news articles that referenced Schor's work but never dug deeper into her sources.
Glad to have more context on how that claim came about, thanks!
Guess you can't trust everything you read in the news, who knew?  :cookieMonster:

capitalism still sucks tho lmao

Fun aside, the feudal era had shorter work hours and more employer-provided benefits than we have now under capitalism lol

As a staunch anti-imperialist myself, I of course denounce the military industrial complex and the horrors we have committed as a nation at the behest of the multi-national corporations attempting to acquire new land for development or resource exploitation.

That said, many of the veterans I have met (and this may just be because of the bias of my own experience and people I associate with) have come from backgrounds that either left them with little other prospects to afford a higher education than a military scholarship, or grew up in families that supported imperialism to such an extent that they felt it was their civic duty to fight on behalf of our nation. Of these people, all of them have grown disillusioned when actually interacting with the people overseas and learning first hand the nuanced experience in a way that none of us civilians would be able to articulate, even if we were to travel abroad ourselves. All of the ones I know who have been in direct combat have stated how they regret what they had to do to stay alive in a situation where they would rather have talked it out. They are the ones who first hand could verify that we are fighting not just statistics but actual people who are driven through ideology or necessity to strike back against our troops. Upon returning home, they unanimously (the ones I know personally at least) have been driven from their conservative and/or centrist beliefs to strongly anti-war leftists.

Unfortunately our government is still doing its best to keep the pipeline to joining the military open, but fewer and fewer recruits are swayed each year. Hence this year they have announced a recall of all veterans under 50 years old to mandatorily re-enlist, even those who have since become jaded and realised what a stuffshow this all is.

All that is to say, the question of people "voluntarily" joining the armed forces is much less black and white than you are saying.

Except for PMCs.
Anyone who joins Academi/Blackwater or the like is absolute scum and just doing it for the pay check and to look cool getting all the top-end gear.
