Off Topic / What are you considered at your school?
« on: September 02, 2011, 10:01:31 PM »
A pretty basic question: What are you considered to others at your school? A jock, nerd, whatever. I myself am generalized as a Science geek. <3

This is a topic dedicated to the discussion of retro video games. You know, pixely games that you can probably play on an emulator now without the FBI barging in on you when you almost beat Mega Man or some stuff.

People always discuss newer games, which is fine, but I don't see enough topics that suit my desire to talk about older video games. I have always enjoyed older video games than newer ones, and I have no idea why. Maybe it's the fact that older games were more challenging and posed a greater challenge than just shooting through missions on Call of Duty or something. Either way, I needed to make a topic over this.

Before you bother me on telling me what retro is, I consider it basically anything N64 and below, and older PC games. Older PC games as in Amazon Trail or Dinosaur Hunter or something. DOS counts, too. Also, don't argue if someone spits out bullstuff about how emulators are illegal. Only certain ones are, and it's all abandonware either way, so no harm is done. Hopefully.

Someone say something.

Covetous is a very forgeted up game about the phenomena of your twin actually fusing into you when you're born. Now, there is no way in all hell it will end up like the end of the video, but this is still scaring the forget out of me.

Help.

Off Topic / Building computer for Skyrim release, need help.
« on: August 15, 2011, 03:51:25 PM »
Since Skyrim is coming out and my computer is somewhat stuffty, I need to build a new one. Build a whole new one, not upgrade my current computer. As of now, I have $340, which doesn't help. My Dad has a lot of spare computer parts, but it's mostly 128MB memory sticks and outdated GPU's and sound cards. En quote from wikipedia, the minimum requirements for TES:V Skyrim are:

2.0 GHz processor or higher
512MB GPU
3 GB of RAM
Windows XP, Vista, or 7
DirectX 9 compatible sound card
DirectX 9 and other bullstuff.

I have no idea if this is true, since Bethesda never actually released any requirements, but I think these are just estimations. Either way, my computer right now can definitely not run Skyrim on decent settings, or even low settings, I assure you.

Since I have an extremely low budget, I need to find a way to make money and build a computer to run Skyrim on at least medium settings. I am already looking at parts, but my money definitely won't cut it when Skyrim comes out. I'm definitely looking at this $667 PC from Maximum PC's August issue, which looks and I am sure will run great, but I need 300 more dollars, and that won't come easily. I can try to narrow down the price a little bit, but to no avail, since my budget is small.

I don't have to buy Skyrim RIGHT when it comes out, but it would be nice if I could get it soon, with a brand new computer to run my other games nicely as well.

Help, if you can.

Off Topic / Science Discussion - Topic: Time Dilation
« on: August 02, 2011, 10:25:00 PM »
This thread is dedicated to the discussion of Scientific theories, paradoxical entities, breakthroughs, phenomenon, and existing scientific facts or happenings.

I will try to change the topic of discussion every couple of days, and try to keep the topic of discussion interesting and thorough. I will also attempt to branch out these topics with certain Sciences, such as Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Biology, etc. etc.

If you have any recommendations for a topic of discussion, seeing as how I am somewhat limited on interesting topics, feel free to send a personal message regarding the topic of discussion and a link to some information on the designated topic.

Today's topic of discussion is of Time Dilation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_dilation

Many theories blend in with Time dilation, and it is a very complex theory. Read up on it.

The basic principles are basic, though. Say you are traveling near the speed of light. Since you are near this speed, time is somewhat compressed. Lets say you travel 10 lights years away from your town, spend 8 months where you are at, and come back. Since you are traveling near the speed of light during all of this, time dilation is in effect.

You come back to your town 20 years in the future.

Because of the time compression and the distance away from the town, time dilation had a major effect over 8 months.

This looks really familiar, and I just cannot place where I have seen it before. I remember it was a claymation of some sort that had to do with 2 kids or something.

If you know, tell me, I need to watch something creepy.

I will be surprised if any of you actually know what this is.

Here's a sample short: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRB3xDg5pnU

In case you didn't already know, MST3K is an old show about a guy either named Joel (from older episodes) or Mike (from newer episodes) who got shot into space because a Dr. Forrest Tucker just didn't like them. Joel (or Mike whatever) made some robot friends, and now they only do one thing: make fun of old movies that either Dr. Forrest Tucker or Pearl Forrester sends them in an attempt to drive Joel (or Mike) insane.

The whole plot sounds really dumb, but the movies they make fun of are the worst movies you could find anywhere, and the jokes they make throughout the movie are outstanding. The movie is played while a silhouette of Joel (or Mike), Tom Servo, and Crow appears in front of the movie. Throughout the movie, they just make up ridiculous jokes and make fun of the movies effects, plot, etc.

Discuss this jewel of a show.

(full shows are available on Netflix, but many shorts (sometimes shown before movies on the real show) are available on Youtube)

Games / N - no really that's what it's called.
« on: July 25, 2011, 11:13:36 PM »
http://www.thewayoftheninja.org/

N is a game. A flash game.
You are a ninja.
The whole point of this game is to get through all of the 100 "episodes", each consisting of five levels. Sadly, you do not live for very long during these stages, hence a time limit.

Many of the stages need strategic follow-through, puzzle solving skills (especially on some user levels), and good gaming experience in general. There are different enemies, each with weaknesses and strengths, and the stages themselves are created in a way to anger you (or make the game easier for you, rarely).

N is available for download by clicking the link above. You can also download it from XBLA (N+) or the DS, and the PSP. From there, you can go through the tutorials to learn the basics of the game, and start playing some levels.

Discuss this awesome, but rage-ensuing game.

Games / Recommend DOS games for meeeeee.
« on: July 19, 2011, 06:19:15 PM »
I recently downloaded DOSBox again after fixing up my computer, and I need some people to recommend DOS games to me.

The games I already have are:
SimAnt.
Scorched Earth.
The Elder Scrolls I: Arena
The Elder Scroll II: Daggerfall
Paratrooper
Amnesia (not the Dark Descent that game is stupid and not scary aaaaaa)
and Loderunner.

I am more interested in strategic games and platformers, so is you can refrain from First-person stuff unless it's magic and stuff like TES.

And please don't argue about legality and all of that bullstuff. Most, if not all DOS games are abandonware now.

Off Topic / Suspicious item found in a scan using HijackThis.
« on: July 17, 2011, 06:22:22 PM »

The highlighted item looks like a registry value involving Kernel fault checks. This is never a good thing, so I was just wondering if this was in any way bad. Everything else looks normal, just processes and other safe registry values.

So, is this bad?

Binaural beats are sounds designed to affect brain function in some way. Theta binaural beats are supposed to put you into REM sleep and relax you, and is proven to enhance chances of having lucid dreams. I found this stuff very interesting (and kind of disturbing), especially when I found out it actually works pretty well.

Here's an article about binaural beats on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binaural_beats

Who needs drugs when you have this?

Off Topic / stuff loving Oblivion.
« on: May 12, 2011, 07:16:25 PM »
I just installed Oblivion (TES4 durr) after keeping it uninstalled for a couple of months. Back then, everything was a breeze. The game cruised by, no lag, etc. Now when I start it up, it works fine. Except after a couple of seconds...

Than it lags like stuff.

At least two frames per second, I tell you. I don't know what I did wrong, if anything. The menus don't lag when I press Esc, so I know it's something ingame. My computer is fine, so don't give me all of this "ur computer suks olo" stuff. I'd love it if some of you were helpful.
