The closest thing to a nuke that sorta defies public stereotyping of a nuke is the Neutron Bomb which was according to Wikipedia, was concieved of in 1958.

But it's still a thermonuclear weapon.

Reading the wikipedia page further, apparently Bush retired Neutron Bomb Artillery rounds.
