Off Topic / "Still Alive" performed by a couple of my friends
« on: April 08, 2011, 12:10:26 AM »
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2LbJ-JlXCU

Two of my friends from school performed "Still Alive" from Portal at the spring choir social, it was awesome.

Later on, the large high-level choir performed a vocal version of the Super Mario theme song, which was also awesome, but which I forgot to record. :(

Off Topic / How do I replace textures in Portal?
« on: March 27, 2011, 04:15:42 PM »
I just downloaded the Portal 2 texture pack for Portal and I'm confused as to how to replace the current textures with the new ones. Several Google searches have returned no helpful results, could anyone give me some help with this?

I am fully aware that this isn't anything new, but the method I used to get to the cake room is, in my opinion, the fastest and easiest. I did not discover this on my own, I saw it in this video, so all credit goes to him for finding these glitches. This video is just to display a quick and easy way of getting to the cake room and still being able to complete the game.

I'm also not really sure if this belongs in Creativity or not but whatever.

Off Topic / Gyazo - Seriously Instant Screen-Grabbing
« on: March 26, 2011, 12:37:52 AM »
http://gyazo.com/en

This program is awesome. There's a free version and a full (paid) version, but all the features one would need are in the free version (save for deleting the pictures you upload, can't do that with the free version). You open the program, select an area on the screen to capture, and Gyazo automatically uploads the picture to gyazo.com and copies its URL to your clipboard. I've seen that some people on the forums already have this, but I decided to make a topic about it anyway just because it's that cool, and convenient.

To display just how instant Gyazo is, I'll grab a shot of this OP and post it as the first thread reply, then you can compare the times between the two posts.

Suggestions & Requests / Player Minimap
« on: March 25, 2011, 03:10:44 AM »
I've seen, as the result of a search, that this has been suggested before, but all the topics are too old. So, I'm suggesting it again. I think it would be a great and very useful feature to have. It would basically just show each player's position within maybe about 5000 bricks. It could also have different colors of dots (representing players, obviously) for whether or not the player is an admin, super admin, if they have trust with you, etc.

Possible? Not possible?

Help / Exhausted almost all options, still can't host
« on: March 19, 2011, 03:53:25 AM »
Okay, so here's my situation in a nutshell.

I used to host all the time. Then I decided to take a break from hosting for a while. I'm now attempting to put a server back up, but for some odd reason, it just won't work. I've tried power cycling/resetting my router and modem and re-forwarding my ports countless times. I don't know what the forget happened between me taking a break from hosting and now, but I cannot host. I have depleted every solution I can think of, and even several from Google searches.

Needless to say, I really need some help here.

The router I'm using is a NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit Router, model WNR3500v2.

Photos of stuff (sorry about large pieces of whitespace, forgot to crop them):

This is my router's port forwarding page for Blockland:

This is my router's Internet Port information from its status page:

These are all my network adapters (I don't use the LAN because I don't have an ethernet plug in my room):

And finally, my TCP/IP settings:

Any and all assistance that could possibly be given here would be extremely appreciated, I would so love to be able to host again.

If you need me to get any other screenshots/information, please don't hesitate to ask, I would be more than glad to get it/them.

Off Topic / Possible computer build, maybe?
« on: March 17, 2011, 01:18:15 AM »
So my parents have finally gotten it through their thick skulls that a desktop computer you bought 6 years ago will not run anywhere close to as well as it did when you first bought it, especially when you've upgraded its parts to the maximum. In other words, our 6-year-old desktop finally died (my dad still has hope for it, he took it into Geek Squad at Best Buy to run diagnostics) because of a faulty PSU (as old as the computer). So, he's been shopping around for parts and whatnot and has come up with the following list of computer parts. I'm literally copying this from what he's written down; if something sounds strange, it's most likely because I can't read his handwriting:

Motherboard: LGA 1366 Core i7 ATX
PSU: Corsair 650W
Processor: Intel Core i7 (3.2 GHz) 960 series/8MB cache
Memory: (Triple channel) 12GB DDR3 (3 x 4GB) (he wrote "CRUCIAL: 1333" next to this, not entirely sure what it means, but I think I have some idea of it)
HDD: Seagate OR Western Digital 1TB SATA drive/32MB cache
DVD drive: 24x DVD ± RW Super Multi-Drive
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
USB: 6x USB 2.0/2x USB 3.0 (on back) (yay USB 3.0)
Graphics card: NVIDIA PCI Express 1GB 16x GT 460
Monitor: Samsung 24" LED SMS (not completely sure what he wrote here...?) 1920 x 1080
Case: (again, not sure what he wrote here) "Cooler Master HAF Case" (...?)

Total price: $1141.38

Opinions? Suggestions? Worth the price? It looks pretty awesome to me, but then again I know there are many people here that know leagues more about computers than myself. He talked to a guy at cpusolutions.com to get all this information, they do custom builds for what seem to be relatively good prices.

Thanks in advance.

Off Topic / Game Night at my school this Friday
« on: March 09, 2011, 12:00:54 AM »
We've got Game Night at school this Friday, starts at 6:00 PM, ends at 5:00 AM. I'm going to be bringing my laptop along with the following games:
- Left 4 Dead (1 and 2)
- Minecraft
- Blockland
- Counter-Strike: Source
- Portal
- Mirror's Edge
- Garry's Mod
- Killing Floor
out of which I can play a maximum of 4.

If I can, I'll also hopefully be livestreaming the whole thing, or at least part of it, that is of course dependent on a few things:
1. The school's Internet not being an ass and blocking access to Steam/Livestream (Steam isn't so much of a problem, I can just run the games without using Steam, but I'd still like to be able to access it).
2. The supervising teacher being okay with my livestreaming of it
3. The school's Internet not being slow as stuff (this is unlikely)

However, even if I do livestream it, I'd like some suggestions on which games, out of the ones I said I'll be bringing, I should play while I'm there. The reason I'm asking is because I'll probably be using the projectors in the room to play my games, so that people can see them.

I already know for sure I'll be playing Blockland so that people can see its awesomeness, but I want to know which three other ones I should play.

EDIT: Agh damnit, I did the poll incorrectly, I meant to make it so you can vote for three.

Off Topic / The Glitch Mob - eargasm
« on: March 05, 2011, 04:15:15 AM »
Oh holy sweet jesus this is some of the best electronic/dubstep I've ever heard. If you like really loving awesome electronic/dubstep, check out TGM's YouTube channel.

Also, as a first song to listen to, Drive It Like You Stole It.

Discuss The Glitch Mob and their awesomeness, and dubstep in general.

I'll explain briefly: I think it'd be nice to have another button inside of a thread labeled, "Search Topic," or just plain, "Search." It would allow you to search through the topic in which you clicked it, and only that topic, for a specific post or something. I'm not expecting this to be added or anything, what with the recent update for required key registration on most boards, but I think it would be a cool thing to have, and it would make searching for specific posts a little easier if you remember, say, the name of the topic, for instance.

And please vote in the poll, I'd like to know if this would be a good idea or a pointless one.

Off Topic / Steam is doing something strange with my sound
« on: February 22, 2011, 07:19:17 PM »
Steam had a client update yesterday, and ever since installing it, whenever someone sends me a message and the little "blip" sound plays, it decreases the volume of every other program. iTunes, for instance, will have its volume turned down greatly when this happens, and the only way to get it back to its normal level is to restart it. It's extremely annoying and I'd like to know if there are any ways to fix it, or if I should just wait for the next update to see if Valve fixes it themselves.

Nevermind, restarting Steam seems to have fixed the problem, locked.

Off Topic / No Starch Press
« on: February 15, 2011, 07:34:58 PM »
I decided to visit the publisher's website of a book I own today, to find that this publisher has some really awesome books. It's called No Starch Press. They've got books on art and photography, hardware and DIY, programming, system administration, and many others. Check it out for yourself; they've even got an entire category in their catalog about LEGOs.

I myself have bought a book from them at a local bookstore, and have also downloaded a free PDF of this book, available here.

Creativity / Graphic Design
« on: February 13, 2011, 11:28:16 PM »
I felt we needed a graphic design topic, or just basically a topic for things you create with a computer.

So post what you've made.

Note: When I say, "things you create with a computer," I don't mean things you create in MSPaint that take you 20 minutes tops.

Some of mine:

Film intro for my clan
Bokeh effect for OasisEngineering (been dead for quite a while)
Light Streak Reflection
Explosion effect I made for A.R.C.
What I consider to be one of my best works
Something I created for my girlfriend
A little something I call "Halfdemon"
A video I made in Adobe After Effects CS5 to test out my new Production Premium CS5
iEvent's new logo
I call this one "Darkness"
Another image I made for my girlfriend for Valentine's Day

Post yours.
