Help / Having some hosting problems
« on: January 30, 2011, 06:37:52 PM »
Sorry for two topics in a short space of time, I should've added this problem to my other topic.

Anyway, lately I've not been able to host for some reason. I used to be able to, but it stopped working when I tried to port forward to be able to host Garry's Mod, which didn't work. I've re-port forwarded for Blockland numerous times, trying all sorts of different options, but it doesn't seem to work for some reason. I do not use UPnP as it doesn't seem to work properly with consistence; for instance, some people would be able to connect to my server just fine, but others cannot. I have a couple ideas of what may be the problem but I cannot be sure. My laptop connects to the Internet through Wi-Fi, and as you can see in the following screenshot, only one of my wireless network connections is currently connected:

When I change TCP/IP settings on my computer, should I change them only for my LAN connection (which, as you can see, is currently disconnected), only for Wireless Network Connection 1, or both?

If there's any other information needed to assist me, just let me know and I'd be glad to get it.

Help / Buffer Overrun?
« on: January 30, 2011, 12:21:14 AM »

I keep getting this crash error every time I try to load any save file over ~1500-2000 bricks. I've restarted Blockland several times and even done a fresh install, keeping add-ons, but all the add-ons I have neither conflict with each other nor cause problems with the game. It doesn't just happen on Plate 3, it's also happened in Bedroom. I started a game in Bedroom and loaded two things, one was Ephialtes' Cottage build, the other was A.T.C. Fort. Ephi's build has around 1500 bricks while A.T.C. Fort has over 6500. Another thing I noticed while both saves were loading was that I experienced horrendous lag during the loading process, but when it had finished loading, the lag instantly disappeared. Same thing happened when clearing the bricks; extreme lag during clearing, none at all afterwards.

I would attach my console log but it seems I began the console trace way too early in the game because its size is over 82 MB. If a console log is required, I can get one and only start it right before I load a save.

Off Topic / Replacing Windows XP with 7
« on: January 28, 2011, 12:24:01 AM »
Before you start suggesting different operating systems, 1. this is not for me, and 2. I am really not in the mood right now, I just want some guidance with this.

This question might seem stupid to some of you but if I could just get a straight answer and/or some assistance, I would be extremely appreciative.

Our family desktop (which I rarely use any more) is, in a nutshell, broken beyond repair. It still works fine, but when you try to install new security software and it tells you that it cannot install because it's detecting other security software on the hard drive that you CLEARLY remember completely uninstalling MONTHS ago, there's something wrong. I've tried everything; rebooting countless times, performing a System Restore all the way back to October motherloving 30th of last year, and aimlessly searching through the Add or Remove Programs list for old security software that I know for damn sure doesn't exist on the hard drive anymore. I loving give up.

Here's my question: When replacing XP with 7, should I go through the hard drive and find all the files that I want to keep, move them to an external drive, wipe the current forgeted up hard drive, and then install 7? Or can I just install 7 without wiping the forgeted up hard drive? The reason I'm including wiping the hard drive at all is because it desperately needs to be wiped, hence "forgeted up."

I guess basically what I'm trying to ask is, what's the best way to go about replacing XP with 7 while still keeping all the files I want to keep?

Excuse any apparent incoherence, it's 10:30 and I'm tired as hell.

Please and thank you in advance.

Off Topic / Quantum entanglement - this is some cool stuff
« on: January 22, 2011, 03:32:57 AM »
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/01/timelike-entanglement/

I just read this article on Wired and was fascinated. I'll copy and paste the first bit of the article for those who don't feel like clicking on a link.

Quote from: http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/01/timelike-entanglement/
In the weird world of quantum physics, two linked particles can share a single fate, even when they’re miles apart.

Now, two physicists have mathematically described how this spooky effect, called entanglement, could also bind particles across time.

If their proposal can be tested, it could help process information in quantum computers and test physicists’ basic understanding of the universe.

“You can send your quantum state into the future without traversing the middle time,” said quantum physicist S. Jay Olson of Australia’s University of Queensland, lead author of the new study.

In ordinary entanglement, two particles (usually electrons or photons) are so intimately bound that they share one quantum state — spin, momentum and a host of other variables — between them. One particle always “knows” what the other is doing. Make a measurement on one member of an entangled pair, and the other changes immediately.

Physicists have figured out how to use entanglement to encrypt messages in uncrackable codes and build ultrafast computers. Entanglement can also help transmit encyclopedias’ worth of information from one place to another using only a few atoms, a protocol called quantum teleportation.

In a new paper posted on the physics preprint website arXiv.org, Olson and Queensland colleague Timothy Ralph perform the math to show how these same tricks can send quantum messages not only from place to place, but from the past to the future.

ZOMBIE KILLIN' WITH SKIP AND KYZOR

A NEW LEFT 4 DEAD GAMEPLAY SERIES COMING SOON TO A YOUTUBE NEAR YOU

Well it's not really "coming soon" anymore, since the first episode is already here.

Yes, Skip and myself have decided to make a Left 4 Dead gameplay series, spiced up with our own humor and antics.

Episode List (be sure to watch in 720p for best quality):
Part 1 (9:03)
Part 2 (11:37)
Part 3 coming soon!

We haven't yet decided how many parts the series will have, I'm thinking anywhere from 10-20.

ALSO: We now have two slots available for guest appearances! If you'd like to be a guest on an episode, you must first meet the following criteria:
- Must have Steam (derp)
- Must have Left 4 Dead (also derp)
- Must have a microphone and be regularly willing to talk into it in-game
- Must have the ability to be spontaneous and funny; keep in mind, the goal of our series is humor
- Must be fairly good at Left 4 Dead
- Must be willing to choose Bill or Louis as your character, as I am always Francis and Skip is always Zoey (yes, we're completely serious about this)

If you meet the aforementioned criteria, let us know by posting here and I'll add you on Steam. From there, we'll have you play a full campaign with us, and if we can see that you're a fitting guest, you're in.

People selected for guest appearances:
1. DracoSoul - Bill (Part 4) (Confirmed guest)
2. CC - Louis (Part 4) (Confirmed guest)

Off Topic / Connecting a PC to an Apple AirPort Extreme
« on: December 25, 2010, 10:29:25 PM »
If anyone has any insight at all with regard to this, do tell.

I'm on vacation right now and my parents and I are staying at the house of a friend of my mom. They have wireless Internet through an Apple AirPort Extreme router (they're Mac people) connected to a modem. My iPod touch, which I'm currently using to type this, can connect and access the Internet. However, my laptop running Windows 7 cannot. It can detect the router, and even connect to it, but it can't access the Internet. I've never used a Mac-controlled network before and only know a little about them. I've already exhausted every solution of which I know, which aren't many, and none have worked. I'd greatly appreciate any help or insight anybody may have on this subject.

EDIT: I have already considered the idea of directly connecting my laptop to the modem via Ethernet however that wouldn't work too well seeing as the modem is in another room, which just happens to be the room in which my parents are sleeping.

Off Topic / Post your Christmas lists here!
« on: December 05, 2010, 10:23:51 PM »
In an attempt to keep the "Here's what I'm getting for Christmas" or "What should I get for Christmas?" threads to a minimum, I had the idea of creating this thread. Post your Christmas lists, or if you don't quite have a list yet, ask people what to get.

I just finished mine tonight (I didn't ask for much because we are going to New York and that's a giant present in itself):

1. 72-LED Green Light Matrix Stainless Steel Watch (http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=134529.0)
2. Call of Duty: Black Ops for Wii (I don't care what you think about the Wii, it's the only console I have that can play Black Ops and my laptop wouldn't even dare to try to handle Black Ops)
3. 2 Wii Classic Pro Controllers (because I don't even want to try to imagine what it'd be like playing Black Ops with a Wiimote)

So, what's on your list?

Off Topic / Going to New York over winter break
« on: December 05, 2010, 12:29:22 PM »
I'm going to New York over winter break and will be staying in the city. I asked my parents if they'd let me meet a Blocklander or two while there and they hesitantly said yes (which surprised me because my parents are neurotic about this kind of thing). My parents set a limit of only two people that I can meet, unfortunately, but it's better than nothing. Additionally, they're not letting me go to your house to meet you. If we can meet, it will be in a restaurant in the city.

Regardless of the former, I'd still like some suggestions for things to do and see in the city.

tl;dr - I'm going to New York over winter break and if you'd like to meet me at a restaurant in NYC, post here and let me know.

EDIT: We're leaving for NY on the 18th, by the way.

Possibilities:
1. *Magick* Mage?
2. Makanix
3. Tokerovin
4. Monocle
5. Kalphiter

Profile, posts.

First he asks how you post an add-on on the forums, and then goes on to say that he knows enough scripting to hack into government computers.

Thank you everyone except those certain individuals that are complete IDIOTS and think they're so cool by being bad and getting banned.
To me that means you are just utterly stupid and somehow handicapped.
I may be new to this but I'm not new to jerks like you (and you know who you are) i do in fact know scripting, just depends on what area you are talking about.
I know enough scripting and programming as well as hacking to get into a government system.
So by you calling me stupid is insulting your own pathetic intelligence so i advise you to shut up, get a life, and get some friends because obviously from the way you sound you have none of the above.
Do not bug me as i have a limited tolerance for losers like you.
-snip irrelevant stuff-

Hey if you don't believe me that sucks for you but oh well.

Well i appreciate the faith and i indeed can hack the government computers and i choose NOT to because if i were i evidently would get caught at some point and for what? To prove to some kid i can? I don't think so. My hacking skills are not put to good use and i choose to keep it that way.

(this next one's my personal favorite)
For one i despise of the "detective" you call Sherlock Holmes because any intelligent human being can notice the crap he sees, two my Superior vocabulary explains that i am indeed NOT a seven year old who doubtlessly wouldn't have responded the way i did, and three i can hack a government computer but it would take about 5 to 6 years using my brilliant formula compared to the 30 years it takes normally for another skilled hacker to get into there system so you are the one trying to be "Holmes" apparently trying to infere that i am a seven year old and can't hack computers, you have hardly any information to support the WRONG conclusion about me not being able to hack a government computer, being seven years of age, and trying to be the stupid Sherlock Holmes.
P.S. Sherlock Holmes has nothing to do with hacking computers as that is probably a technicians job which obviously he isn't and neither are you!

It's not so much the government computer but the messages they send out that are encrypted that i can hack, they mostly use RSA encryption. That is what i can hack so in a way i can hack the computers.

...

son, if you don't even know how to post a download link, there's no way in stuff you know how to hack.

Off Topic / Extremely suspicious file, would like insight
« on: November 25, 2010, 09:47:29 PM »
A while ago I received an email from a friend with the subject line "cool new game i found", and the email had an attachment. The message body was simply "have fun with ths", which is how he always types, so I'm pretty sure the email was actually sent from him. However, upon opening the uncompressed folder after downloading it and uncompressing it, I find "skijumper.bat" inside with an icon of what looks to be a snowball. I would've opened it if it didn't have the ".bat" file extension, which made me very suspicious, so I opened it in Notepad and read its code. Now, I'm not a coding expert, but I do know some stuff, and what I saw didn't look like any game. I'd like it if someone here who's more knowledgeable with this kind of thing could provide some more insight into what this actually does. I've copied and saved all the code into a new text document and uploaded it to MediaFire. I can assure you this is no trick, it is merely a text file. The only reason it's protected is because I don't want it getting into the hands of someone who could and possibly would do some damage with it, as I'm sure it can do.

If you would like to try and help me out, please PM me for the download link, as I do not want the code getting into the hands of someone that could do the damage of which I'm sure the file is capable.

Off Topic / Might be getting a new desktop for Christmas
« on: November 20, 2010, 04:05:29 PM »
I've told my parents that the only things on my Christmas list are either a PS3 or a new computer (with preference for the computer). They told me that they'd "think about it," which when said by my parents usually means yes. Seeing as hell would freeze over before I let my parents buy a pre-built computer, the whole idea of it being a legitimate Christmas present would be kind of ruined because they'd have to know what parts to order. So I decided I'd go put together a list of parts for the computer, which I've done, and I'd like your opinions on it. EDIT: Something I forgot to say is that this computer would be for the family, not just for myself.

Case
Motherboard
Processor
Memory
Graphics card
Sound card (nevermind on this one, thanks Otis)
Cooling system
HDD

Good? Any suggestions? This will be my first time assembling a custom computer so please let me know if I've selected anything completely incompatible with something else. Total price (including the rebate on the motherboard) is $1189.88.

Many of my friends are going. I'm personally not going because I'm more patient than that, but I was wondering if anybody else was.

Also, feel free to discuss other Harry Potter stuff.

Off Topic / Death at my school
« on: November 09, 2010, 11:48:05 PM »
A sophomore boy at my school was reported dead last night at his friend's house. They were playing the "Choking Game," apparently. The administration at school held an entire goddamn assembly, band playing music and all, and a lot of people felt really sad, some were even crying.

Me? I honestly have absolutely zero sympathy for the kid. I even said it out loud during the assembly, but only loud enough for a few people around me to hear. They all turned and shot me nasty looks and I just sat there, expressionless. One of my friends that was sitting next to me asked me why I said what I said. My response: "If you're stupid enough to strangle yourself to get high, you deserve to die." My friend looked all horrified and stuff and said, "How could you say that??"

Oh my bad, I didn't know that I'm expected to have sympathy for people with an intelligence quota of 6. Bite me.

God loving damnit kids are handicapped these days. It's this kind of stuff that reminds me of that one story from one of "The Darwin Awards" books about the guy that strapped a J.A.T.O. to the top of his car, fired it up, and drove across the desert for a few seconds before his car took off into the air and slammed into a cliff.

Off Topic / Computer club
« on: November 08, 2010, 08:21:15 PM »
I just single-handedly started my high school's very first computer club (no it wasn't that hard but I still feel awesome for doing it). The goal of the club is basically to make people much more knowledgeable with computers, and once they have that knowledge, they can choose to either continue attending the meetings or not, because from then on we will be moving into actual programming and design. I have a general idea of the direction in which the club will go, however I'd like your feedback on it.

For starters, we'll begin with something simple: how to efficiently use programs like Word and PowerPoint, teaching everything from keyboard shortcuts to customizing how the document looks. From there we'll move into more advanced areas such as using our school's "EZ Access" tool to download files from your school folder to your home computer, and tips and tricks for sharing files via email using filehosting sites or the like. After that, people can either choose to continue attending meetings or not, because we'll then move into the very basics of anything related to scripting, web design (yes I am fully aware that HTML is not a scripting language, hence why I said "anything related to scripting). We'll teach HTML, JavaScript, PHP, CSS, etc., and we'll eventually move into the big project I have planned which is for our computer club to make, from scratch, a forum for ourselves. We will, of course, eventually traverse into more difficult territory, such as C languages and Java.

Any suggestions? Languages to add? Languages to remove? Other materials in general to add/remove? I'm not saying that I'll actually use your suggestions but I will certainly consider them. I will be holding a short question and answer session at the end of our first meeting for people to ask questions about the materials or to suggest/inquire about materials we should cover. We will also be covering graphic design and basic hardware.

Thoughts?
