No, he needs to put it into DFU mode, which is required for jailbreaking, and which can only be done with the use of both the sleep/power button and the home button.
@OP: Unfortunately I don't think there's anything you can do. Is the warranty on your device still valid? If so, you can get it repaired at the Apple Store, possibly for a price.

Also, there was no post on Wednesday because the release was just a promo video for a new hardstyle/hard dance podcast. I'm not a big fan of hardstyle/hard dance and I didn't really think a promo video for a podcast about the genre was really worth posting. Cybertails posted the link to it above me if you'd still like to check it out.
