Games / ☸ DARKEST DUNGEON - where the RNG genuinely hates you
« on: February 19, 2015, 12:00:51 PM »

Darkest Dungeon is a challenging gothic roguelike turn-based RPG about the psychological stresses of adventuring.

Recruit, train, and lead a team of flawed heroes through twisted forests, forgotten warrens, ruined crypts, and beyond. You'll battle not only unimaginable foes, but stress, famine, disease, and the ever-encroaching dark. Uncover strange mysteries, and pit the heroes against an array of fearsome monsters with an innovative strategic turn-based combat system.

☸The Affliction System – battle not only monsters, but stress! Contend with paranoia, masochism, fear, irrationality, and a host of gameplay-meaningful quirks!
☸Striking hand-drawn gothic crowquill art style
☸Innovative turn-based combat pits you against a host of diabolical monsters
☸Ten (and counting!) playable hero classes, including Plague Doctor, Hellion, and even the Leper!
☸Camp to heal wounds or deliver inspiring speeches.
☸Rest your weary, shell-shocked characters in town at the Tavern or the Abbey to keep their stress in check.
☸Classic CRPG and roguelike features, including meaningful permadeath, procedural dungeons, and incredible replay

Can you stem the tide of eldritch horrors erupting across your family’s ancestral estate?

Descend at your peril!

this is a game based entirely on stress. your characters are stressed your ass is stressed the RNG is stressed and you're in hell

your task is to manage a slew of adventurers, sending them into stuff four at a time, and then furiously juggling things like "stress", "party order" and "not dying".  the combat is hard as bollocks and the game itself is intent on kicking your ass.  play this.

Do you remember that feeling of desperation and loss of hope the first time you set out to conquer every demon and threat and Dark Souls? Well you found a home here. With every step and corner you turn, death waits for your party and looms over them like a cloud of sickness.

-Graphics: This game is 2D, but it's 2D done right, the art style is amazing and you feel the weight behind every swing of the sword and throwing of a bomb to take out your foes. The enemies come to life and spew their disease upon you, stab you deep and make your blood paint the ground, and stun you with their screeches of terror. Overall I couldn't be more pleased with this. 9/10

-Sound: Narration and effects help paint a wonderful picture as you dive into each hole and hope to come out on the other side victorious. The slashes, splashes, clinging and banging of swords against armor and skin are very nice and doesn't feel like some cheap call in for effects. The music for your journey is sometimes overdramatic but it's not supposed to be a joyful trip. Overall, very nice and whenever you hear that tune chime in at the end of a hard fought battle, it's extremely worth it. 8.8/10

-Gameplay: The very meat and potatoes of every game and I'm glad to say this shines and keeps me coming back for more. With every journey you take, you will bring back a number of materials and gold to help soothe your warriors, strengthen your stronghold, and tune your party up to face what dangers lie with the next trip. The game centers around this hub and you go forth selecting what members to take, what supplies to carry, and what quest to take on and hopefully succeed. Party members range from brutish fighters to sly and trick filled jesters to help lay waste to the evils that lie underground. The last dungeon is not available to play yet but still there is already 70+ hours of gameplay for you to tackle while you wait in the meantime and prepare your party to take it on. Players experience stress with every negative event they encounter, they will get abusive, they will become masochists and will refuse healing. Managing their effects and taking care of what you need to concerning their minds is key if you want to win. I've rage quit a few times and lost some very dear veterans but their monuments and achievements still remain with me as I bring some fresh new faces with me to avenge them in the depths. Randomly assembled rooms and dungeons are present and allow for an excellent amount of replayability even if the objectives and boss enemies are the same. Overall this game also shines in the gameplay department and delivers. 10/10

-Controls: Very smooth and responsive, the controls haven't presented any frustrations or been the source of any of my failures and that makes me very happy. While there is potential for some tweaks and additions, the controls get the job done and just leave room to add on to and not patch to fix right away and leave it unplayable. Overall, great controls. 9/10

-Replayablity: As mentioned previously with the random assembling and roguelike elements, this game allows for multiple revisits even after completing the main game whenever we can. Overall, a decent amount of replayability. 8.8/10

Final words: This game is Early Access first and foremost, but just know that this is an extremely polished and fine example of EA done right. You're not taking a chance at being severely disappointed by purchasing this with all the other information you have here. Will you get your 19.99 worth out of this game? Absolutely, this game can only go up from here and is a pleasure to play even if it isn't complete yet. Total rating: 9.1/10

look what actually released today

From what I got, you're a slice of bread and need to get to something hot and toast yourself. Touching the floor will kill you. It's an actual game with actual win/lose conditions and sounds pretty not-stuff, so I think I'll wishlist it.

Games / RUNNING WITH RIFLES - top down war game thread 2
« on: October 02, 2014, 06:43:15 AM »

So I found this neat little game and tried the demo I will most likely be buying it as soon as I get a video card.

You can download the demo here. Please understand the demo is version 0.40 well the newest version is 0.60

RUNNING WITH RIFLES is basically a top-down gunshoots game with RPG elements, in which you're a soldier who sprints around shooting guns at differently colored soldiers. It's almost like a top-down Medal of Honor if Medal of Honor wasn't stuff.

I'm gonna quickly put the "about the game" bit of the steam page I linked and bolded up there:

RUNNING WITH RIFLES is a top-down tactical shooter with open-world RPG elements.

In RWR, you join the ranks of an army as a common soldier, just like the thousands around you. To your superiors, you're nothing but cannon fodder...
The open world approach lets you define your own path and story in the campaign. Push back the enemy with your comrades or go deep behind enemy lines to sabotage their efforts and loot valuable items.

As you gain experience, you are promoted with higher command over soldiers and equipment. Call in artillery fire missions or paratrooper reinforcements when the situation gets tight! Use your squad to man armed boats, tanks and APC's, or, become the expert lone wolf you always aspired to be - it's up to you!

 - hundreds of locations to explore from trenches to towns, deserts to snowy valleys
 - emergent AI that will question if you're as smart as you think you are
 - realistic cover system (note: none of that health-regeneratey stuff. hiding behind brick fences is vital because if you get shot you Die)
 - dozens of different weapons, support and cover items, radio calls, vehicles
 - 40+ multiplayer support, dedicated servers, coop, PvP, PvPvE
 - speech bubbles!
 - deaths and fails, a lot of them, including your own!
 - ...and of course, mods!

holy stuff why didn't I know of this taking place

for people new to this: you get to pay any price for several games. $1 and up includes Steam keys, ~$8 (actual number based on average, can and will vary) nets you extra games, $10 nets you an early access game and $65 includes various merch (even though it's kind of a tall-ass price)

on a side note, LUFTRAUSERS is the best game on there and I'll fight you over this statement

MAJICKA TOO! Lirn 2 Spell! A g a i n

cheesy as forget trailer aside IS ANYONE ELSE HYPE

first there was nickel's, then there was zix's

they were some of the servers i actually played lots on - each round gave you several random guns, and then sent you to somehow kill everyone else. it was chaotic, it was a battle of wits and skill, and it was glorious and home to lots of moments of badassery, esp. when jeeps were involved.

no but seriously stuff was fun. they were a solution to the "getting excited to do something then instantly not caring" thing thanks to that specific trait. wish there was one rn
