Games / Alter Ego - Your other life, through text and choices
« on: November 18, 2013, 01:18:58 AM »
Several years ago, I was introduced to the game Alter Ego. At the time, I didn't pay much attention - Just play. You'd chose actions, moods, and see how the game treats you depending on them. You'd go from life to death, although death always seemed sooner than you'd like. You could say, and this probably is, that the point is to reach death by old age instead of any other reason. To live a good, stable life.

The webpage states the game was originally written and released in 1986. Since then, it was adapted for the web browser. While the site has not had an update in 4 years, it is still hosted. Try it out and see how far you get, or how quickly you can end it all:

That comment was used to link people to a screamer. For extra long comments, comments have an Expand this comment>> button which displays as a link. What people do is name videos the exact same as the expand comment text. YouTube video links become the title of the video, so the screamer video seems like a normal expand comment. When clicked, you get what happens.

The Crystal Cruiser requires a very specific list of events to occur, so it isn't just doing the right things but the game being set up so they are possible. Makes it difficult as HELL.

when you use hi def texturepacks in this newest version, do you still need to use MC patcher to fix them?

HD Texture Pack Support has been in the vanilla game for a year.

So they actually just fixed time links. In fact, you can right click them to get the url copy/pastable. Not redeeming of the flaws, but I'm surprised they fixed it.

ugh i really want to use glsl shaders but they arent updated

3 weeks and barely anything is updated -_-

http://mcp.ocean-labs.de/news.php

Because MCP isn't updated yet. Minecraft 1.7 changed a massive amount of base code, including the sound and rendering systems, so he's essentially starting from scratch on writing up that. Also, Minecraft 1.7.3 is going to be coming out, and having a ton of mods updated to 1.7.2 would be problematic considering how many bugs 1.7.2 has which would require mod fixes if you have 1.7.2 mods. Since he works for Mojang now, he's even further in with the developers, so he'll definitely get the update out by 1.7.3. (And no, he wouldn't just take the code directly from the game for MCP. 1: The index would not match up AT ALL. 2: A major point is you don't have the actual source code - just an interpretation of it.)

By the way, vanilla has default shaders. Obviously much less powerful, but hopefully 1.8 will help.

Also, there was a sound update. However, Amazon's servers have been broken since yesterday, so most people aren't getting them. I noticed in the console it mentioned villagers, although it might have just been it validating my current sounds and not that it was finding new sounds. When I did a full startup of the game, it gave me that error for EVERY sound I had because Amazon's servers weren't working to compare them to my own.

Absolutely nothing. I've explained this in an earlier post why this doesn't work anymore.

I saw a video claiming Polaris was contacted by YouTube saying they will be fixing some major issues, one of them being an option to completely disable URLs in comments. Not sure how that's turning out.

They also removed time links again, probably permanently. The comment section used to be part of the actual page, but now it is an iframe of a Google APIs page. AKA the comment section is actually a different website displayed within the page. Comment links worked by opening the same URL but with # parameters such as #t=1213s or what have you. Now that it is an iframe, browsers see the link and can't make a connection to the topmost webpage. Essentially, the browser sees this as a new URL and opens it in a new page.

Point being that browsers can't work with the old method of times in comments. They'd have to create some hacky handing around, if anything, which probably wouldn't work globally across all browsers. They seriously forgeted themselves with this new system.

There are absolutely no where near 6 hours of game play in this game. Maybe if you spend literally the whole game not working on the story. I didn't rush it, I spent time running around looking for things, I didn't just speed run it. This DLC is way too short.

I missed one audio diary, so I'd say I didn't look enough.

I will say I think I lost an hour or even two because the game had a major bug... I reported it and a developer should have relayed my save files to the devs. Basically, Elizabeth disappeared and as such cutscenes with her nullified.

Still, I took a while just listening to things, looking around, dying from lack of resources... Etc...

They changed the likes/dislikes bar, as well as the thumbs up/down buttons. Doesn't effect normal uses too much, but I use a userstyle to change the entire look of the website, so this broke it. I know, again this wouldn't bother most of you. I've told the userstyle creator and he'll apply a fix. :o

Beat it in literally an hour and 45 minutes.

It took me 5-6 hours. I explored so much - there's so many easter eggs, secrets, extras, etc. You can't rush a game like this - you gotta explore.

Sent you a request on Steam in case you want a better way to talk. Currently internet operations are buggy and laggy, so simple chat relay is the best I have.

I'll detach the drive and discuss this.

Try this out:

See what health and error scans say.

Which version? The non-pro version was last updated 5 years ago, and the pro version's trial says it doesn't support multiple drives or something.

Edit: Installed the Pro Trial:

Number of hardware read errors: 198770256
Number of seek errors: 48369

Updated it:
(01) Raw Read Error Rate: Current 108, Worst 100, Threshold 6, Data 15739144, Status ok
Number of hardware read errors: 15739144
(07) Seek Error Rate: Current: 100, Worst 253, Threshold 30, Data 48396, Status ok
Number of seek errors: 48396

I've had the Error Scan running and so far 0.0% damaged. 21 minutes in,
