looks like a shard of glass with tape around one end.

That's polycarbonate glass.
I was thinking about bulletproof glass, but then you could keep it forever.

Yup.
It's makeshift, 20 damage per hit, and can only be used 30 times before it breaks, due to the fact that it's more plastic than glass.

I've had my xbox for 3 years and the only time I've RRoD'd is when I had a really screwed up copy of mercs 2 and when I played it nonstop for like days(wasn't playing it most of the time but it was on).

Had my 360 ever since it came out.
And it's the Halo 3 version
