This is somewhat akin to the Mass effect weapons.

The weapon has a heat meter. Firing fills it up. Not firing for a period of time emptys it.
When the heat meter is full, you can wait for it to cool, or remove the heatsink and put in a new one. (Heatsinks limited)

Just a small concept for youse. Try it out sometime.
