General Discussion / Re: A "elevator" type exploit.

it was a response to aggression

Facetiousness is not aggression.  If I reply to a question about whether something on the forum exists, with a link that clearly points somewhere while saying that it does not, I am being facetious, and implying that the person to whom I'm replying did not use the Search button.  For it to be aggressive I would have make an actual attack against them, such as posting:

What the hell is wrong with you?  Five seconds searching and you could have had your answer without looking like an idiot!

Please note the difference between the two styles of posts, and do not claim that facetious posts are aggressive in future.  Now go forth, and misuse diction no more.

at this point, there's been maybe a total of an hour or two spent on this, so starting over isn't that much trouble
but I'm afraid that if we have to deal with that bug we may never be able to figure it out. does your code even convert it back properly? at the very least it would erase any tildes

but I also don't think going back and replacing everything is the best way to do it. we still want a record of everything else (at least, I do). just start over from here, and only replace the stuff in the OP, adding a note to ignore the ciphered text on the first page

It does convert it back, but replaces all tildes with spaces in the process.

I'm all for not having to redo all the stuff you already did, but asking us to figure out a cipher is hard enough without us having to also account for a bug in your code

Well if everyone would rather we did it with V2, I'm perfectly willing to go back and replace all the ciphertexts.

and uhhhhhhhhhhh xalos can you cipher a space and a ~ individually again? they seem to be the same when ciphered, judging by the list you posted. which doesn't sound right

Because of a dumb mistake I made, '~' becomes ' ' if you encrypt and decrypt text.  I've fixed this, but the fix changes all ciphertexts, so I've decided to use the old version for this thread.

EDIT: Misread last one as 12 newlines

My top-model deciphering skills tell me that Xalos' Cypher is bald showing us the most used letter of the alphabet. Case closed!

So, all of them are equally-used?  That seems... improbable!  :)

16 newlines. in case that doesn't come across right.

Code: [Select]

All trailing newlines are removed before the cipher is applied.

I've made a cipher.  This is not a cipher I would use for encrypting my bank credentials, but it should be interesting to see if you guys can crack it!

The ciphertext you're trying to break is this:

Old ciphertext, use the one on page 2.

Code: (Ciphertext) [Select]
KI"Gx=P#FG4"$5@t|sAo1*EVE>!HzpY$[U$#BF*@*_)=X-4=V_Q^<.h?H4G`%JtpEnmNb*,=g"v2TxKyss+9Fc`2pofMwcMhmV5jHw6'LIHdxoU6]?siZSU|LWXJ9_#p=(@3y"aFS[bV|nc)Fh.CY\Z&$pxi/+DL/3f067'bm?/%T&rPKtfU_|j7O()8w#+6{(nq0d&y;Qb!q;CW.{3@[LEHi&c8qh<`&te$@`/.;,M[ovm;@%d%SE

If you want to know the ciphertext for a chosen plaintext, post it in

or [tt][/tt] tags and I'll reply with the ciphertext!

EDIT: Restored all the old ciphertexts, and put the V2 ones on page 2.  Ignore all the ciphertexts on page 1.

Yes.

How do you count to infinity in a computer while keeping all the precision?
Solve this and you win a Noble Prize.

It is possible, just not immediately obvious.  It's impossible to do it in a fixed-length format, because of obvious reasons; however, you could have a system for integers where the high bit of each byte signals that there's another byte that will come after it.  Unfortunately, no one's ever come up with this and called it something like "Variable-Length Quantity" or "VarInt".

The same thing would be possible for floating-point numbers, it's just even less obvious than for integers.  There's also the problem that floating-point numbers only terminate for numbers whose denominators are a power of two, which means that if you tried to store one-third in a VarFloat, you'd run into problems with little things, like all your memory being allocated to that one VarFloat.

What you could do instead is have two VarInts representing a fraction, where one stores the numerator and the other stores the denominator.  However, this runs into the same problem with irrational numbers.  Ultimately, the problem with storing numbers is that we don't want to store the entire number, we just want to store however much of the number we need to do our calculations.
