One of the Bibles commandments says "Thou shalt not steal", To the Hebrew culture who had this law at the time. They saw it punishable by death. We here in America don't, because I don't see Christians executing people left in right for petty theft. I blame the way Christians take things of the Bible out of context like you said.
But you will never be told you should die because you're a thief by a Christian.
